I don't get it :(
gah german. after being in this country for a year i cant wait to get back to the US and not have to speak german for a while. English is better by far, because i understand it a lot more easily haha.
I really like German, and not just because it was one of my best subjects in school. I suppose I've never had to spend a year in Germany, though.
Well, I just uploaded three tracks for Alex's Voivod thread, so make sure you check them out. I'm sorry I didn't get to make it onto MSN, Bartender, but I really must be getting to bed. I only came on at this late hour to check my emails, etc. (I didn't have the oppurtunity today).
So, I have to make a decision:
I currently do Politics, Music, Drama and English Literature. I have three choices:
A) Drop one (which is what most people do, as the subjects get harder from here on in)
B) Drop one and do Economics for a year (which will help me get a deeper understanding of Politics, which is what I hope to do at university. However, it's meant to be very hard, and I don't know who much I'm gonna like the course)
C) Keep doing all four (which will be good for my university applications, as the unis I have my eye one are all pretty much top unis).
help?

Well what happens is you get here, and you are all like gung ho must learn german for the first 2 months. Then once you start feeling confident enough to speak german all the time, it actually becomes much more difficult because what happens is the germans hear your accent is from an english speaking country and just have to show off their english to you. So it becomes frustrating to try and speak german and learn german because everyone is liek "oh youre an american, look at how good my english is!" (or in your case they would be like "Oh youre from the UK, look at how good my english is!")
Fun language when you can actually speak it and get your point across though
12ounces, could you do me favour? I've got this passage in German and I have no idea what it means

Do you thoroughly enjoy all the classes you named above? If not, I would drop the one and do economics so that you have a head start when you get into a university. If you do enjoy all of your classes - and you think you could handle it - do all four! It can always help NOT to drop a class and pick up another one, but the question really is, do you think you'd be ok doing that? Economics is no easy bit, from what I've heard.

Do all four. I have the choice of doing three or four subjects a semester. I do four science/engineering/maths subjects a semester, and suck it up when the going gets tough. Basically, your boss once you leave school won't say:
"Look Sam, I'm going to give you three tasks to do, but if you don't want to do the second one, just leave it be; it's okay. Can I get you more milk for your tea?"

Well I dropped one when I went from lower to upper sixth; I think pretty much everyone except the guys who were taking Further Maths just carried on with three instead of four, in my school. I don't know how tactical that was though; it was just the normal way.

HOHE LIEBE
(Ludwig Uhland)
In Liebesarmen ruht ihr trunken,
Des Lebens Frücte winken euch;
Ein Blick nur ist auf mich gesunken,
Doch bin ich vor euch allen reich
Das Glück der Erde miß ich gerne
Und blick, ein Märtyrer, hinan,
Denn uber mir, in goldner Ferne,
Hat sich der Himmel aufgetan
If you don't mind, could you also do these two?
SELIGER TOD
(Ludwig Uhland)
Gerstorben war ich
Vor Liebeswonne;
Begraben lag ich
In ihren Armen;
Erwecket ward ich
Von ihren Küssen;
Den Himmel sah ich
In ihren Augen
O LIEB, SO LANG DU LIEBEN KANNST
(Ferdinand Freiligrath)
O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst,
O lieb, so lang du lieben magst,
Die stunde kommt, die Stunde kommt,
Wo du an Gräben stehst und klagst.
Und sorge, daß dein Herze glüht
Und Liebe hegt und Liebe trägt,
So lang ihm noch ein andres Herz
In Liebe warm entgegenschlägt
Und wer dir seine Brust erschließt,
O tu ihm, was du kannst, zulieb
Und mach ihm jede Stunde froh
Und mach ihm keine Stunde trub!
Und hüte deine Zunge wohl:
Bald ist ein hartes Worst entflohn,
O Gott, es war nicht bös gemeint,
Der andre aber geht und weint.
O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst,
O lieb, so lang du lieben magst,
Die stunde kommt, die Stunde kommt,
Wo du an Gräben stehst und klagst.

Alright GurS, here you go, i did th ebest i could. Some of the lines were very very idiomatic and i was unable to come up with an english equivalent, and some i jsut didnt understand. A couple words may have been misspelled a well because i did not know them, and could not find them. anyway, you can easily get the jist of it, so here you go:
HIGH LOVE/MY DEAR (yes that is high not hi)
In loving arms rests your (trunken = used for drunk but that makes no sense here)
The fruits of life wave at you
A glance only made me sink,
But I am rich with you (very idiomatic, doesn’t translate right)
The luck of the world I gladly measure,
And look, a martyr, hinan?
Then over me, in the golden distance
The sky opened wide
BLESSED DEAD
I was dead
Before (lovely delight?)
I lay buried
In your arms
I will be awoken
By your kisses
I saw the sky
In your eyes
OH LOVE, LOVE AS LONG AS YOU CAN
Oh love, love as long as you can
Oh love, love as long as you like
The hours come, the hours come
Where you stand and lament on graves
And sorrows, that your heart emits
And love nourishes, and love carries
So (long) another heart in love
strikes warmly against it
and who opens up your breast
Oh do it, what you can, to live
And do it each hour happily
And do it no hours with sorrow
And tend your tongue (must be an idiom)
Soon a hard (Worst?) flees
Oh god, it was not meant to be evil
The other goes and cries
Oh love, love as long as you can
Oh love, love as long as you like
The hours come, the hours come
Where you stand and lament on graves

It's just his way with CDs. He has plenty of his own (mostly CD-Rs and compilations), but he never looks after them. Every CD he owns, more or less, has a broken case (if any case at all) and is scratched to all hell, or else dirty or otherwise rendered eventually unplayable.
So I know I shouldn't have lent him it, but I did.

Afternoon, guys.
I went to an interesting party last night. It was waaay far away from my house, back by where I went to high school. A bunch of friends from high school were there, so it was cool to see some of them. Others I could have done without seeing.
Anyway, I had to drive 92 miles this morning to get home. After a night of drinking and smoking, that was quite a feat.

New Jersey works the same way, the state itself isn't very large, but there are 3 distinct regions, north jersey, south jersey, and the jersey shore, and they are so drastically different it is insane. Even the different areas use different words for things, it really is like two separate countries.
Example: North jersey, and the jersey shore; a long sandwich is called a Sub
South Jersey: it is called a Hoagie.
another example: North jersey: ketchup and mayo on french fries
South Jersey: just ketchup
Jersey Shore: we prefer vinegar.

I'm going to this tonight:
The Hirshhorn and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (LAMOCA), have co-organized the first exhibition in the United States to examine the many forms of visual music, an interdisciplinary, broad-based art movement that explored the relationship of abstraction, color, and music. Accompanied by a 272-page catalogue, the presentation brings together the work of forty artists and an array of media, including painting, photography, film, light projection, computer graphics, and immersive environments. The exhibition is curated by the Hirshhorn’s Kerry Brougher and Judith Zilzcer and LAMOCA’s Jeremy Strick and Ari Weisman. Visual Music is organized by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
"In addition to getting a late-night peek at the exhibit tonight, Joshua White and Gary Panter will be producing a psychedelic light show they're calling "Cosmic Drift." We're told that "Joshua White achieved acclaim in the 1960s for The Joshua Light Show, in which he created kaleidoscopic, mind-bending effects for the likes of Janis Joplin, Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, and the Allman Brothers Band." Groovy! The show will go on rain or shine, and alcohol is prohibited."

Wow... it's pretty cool. The 12 string is a nice touch. I also really like what they did with the 'solo'. I diggit more than the original but I'm not really a fan of Hendrix so my opinion is void I suppose.
I just think as far as covers go, it is excellent.

I feel like for a cover to be legit, it has to be as different as possible from the original, not as close as possible.
I feel the same way. I like all the different instruments they use in this cover.

All my little brother's friends are pot heads and pretend faggots. They think it's some cool trend to be gay or bi so they all hang out, get high and then do dirty things I'd rather not discuss because my brother is involved. Only one of the kids is actually gay as far as I know.

Oh my god, that is disgusting.
How old is your kid brother, anyway?
I always wanted siblings, but only an older brother or a younger sister (all within 2-3 years of my age). I definitely wouldn't want a younger brother and would be indifferent at the idea of an older sister.

Wait, were you here on Thursday night when Jim made his big post, and then called us idiots? If not, well that's what started the ball rolling on the tension here. (Which left immediately as Pete entered. :p) Then, Bus started an AIM chat, and invited madey and bobo, which was a bad idea from the get go since Bobo has something against her, and vice versa. I have the conversation on my computer, but it was basically a dick waving contest(thx Ray) between him and Madey. They were arguing about the uselessness of this thread, and how we should be making more rock threads or something...
It seems to have passed, which is a good thing, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. :p

Ive been working a lot during the day so I can get a pimped out computer to play games/record on. I wouldn't say Parabol/a is my favorite Tool song, but it contains by far the best solo by Jones. It's nothing technical at all, but it's just a very great solo. Gotta love the pinch harmonics at the end. :p
I think the last 6 songs I've learned on guitar have been by Tool.

Actually, before you get all those, why don't you check out Ticks& Leeches. The drumming is exceptional on that song, and Maynard does some of the most wicked screaming on that song. It took him 3 weeks before he fully recovered from recording it, and he refuses to sing it live. There is a lame 3 minute segue in the middle, but other than that, the song is extraordinary. It would probably suit your tastes more, too. :)

My flatmate kept a steady line of "Tool's music is contrived and pretentious" throughout the whole year, but I'm pretty sure he hadn't actually heard much by them. He kept insisting their music was only there as a vehicle for them to show off their virtuosic brilliance on their instruments, and his views on what is and is not pretentious I tend to discount anyway.

Maybe he has them confused with Dream Theater. I don't recall Adam Jones doing any sweep arpeggios or Justin Chancellor doing any two-handed polyrhythmic tapping. They're just a progressive grunge band, really.

Half of mx does. Vocals are weird, they don't really make the song, usually. Like if the music is boring or just bad, vocals usually don't make up for it. (Maybe Patton?)
But they are like the key to the liking of a band, both Tool and Dream Theater have horrible vocalists, in my opinion. Same goes for Extreme metal newbies, how many posts do you read saying "I like the music, not the vocals"
Vocals are like the surface, if you don't like them, there's not much chance you'll go through to the deeper part.
Yet average vocals, can work perfectly in a song, I could even say, go unnoticed and be part of a great song. So It's important and not important. Weird. Vocals.

Well, obviously I'm aware that music is subjective. But there are bands who deal with more vocal issues than others, no doubt. Some people just have a very distinctive voice, which can be godly to one, extremely irritating to others. While other bands almost never deal with a "I don't like the vocals" comment.
Alice in Chains
Tool
Dream Theater
Smashing Pumpkins
Megadeth
Cryptopsy

I dislike most high vocals, though. So most of Power Metal is out, things like AC/DC (bleurgh) and loads of other hard rock and traditional heavy metal.

ITP: I reply to everything since I last posted.
Hey WA Jake: when everyone says they've moved on from the bullshit, you don't need to ask people for their permission to retell what has gone on. No one cares anymore, everyone has buried their perspective hatchets, everyone is essentially cool with each other once again, and you want to pull the skeletons out of the closet again? I'm sorry, but considering we've talked about moving on and not bringing up the past over MSN and not through the thread, why would you elect to bring all the bullshit back up again? Are you a master storyteller? :)
Come on. Everyone has forgotten about it, and everyone has started fresh, and it's evidenced in everyone's posting. So, stop with the storytelling, please. No one cares enough now to invest their time to bring the skeletons out of the closet. Your bias shines through when you say, "Hey so-and-so did you read about what's happened the past few pages ? It all started when...", but we're all on the same level again. Everyone has moved on. Just get over it like everyone else has. There are no brownie points on teh Intranet. :)

But yeah, go Tool *pom-pom*
///
In regards to Dream Theater: I like them as well and am a bit more familiar with them than I am with Tool /obvious statement
I recall reading somewhere (probably on MX, where all good things happen) that LaBrie is classically trained in opera, and had major throat problems on the Awake tour, hence his weaker, I guess, vox on the following albums and live and such.
But yeah, go Dream Theater *pom-pom*

It's a risk you take when you steal. I am always fully aware of the consequences. That is one reason I am very careful and frequently leave stores I planned on shoplifting from empty handed. I am entirely unwilling to walk out hoping and so I don't. If I leave a store, I am entirely confident in myself and what I am doing.

Unfortunately, I live in Brandon, Mississippi. I was born in Boston though, and lived there for ten years. I still visit frequently.
Haha, Mississippi...then again, Big Al Jefferson is from MS, so...I dunno.
I think I heard your situation partially a few days back, but I wouldn't mind hearing. Unless you don't wanna post it, which is also fine. :shrugs:
Well I mean, it goes far beyond that...I mean, it's been long-thought that baseball is a bonding moment for fathers and sons, which is obviously something I have not been able to experience (I went to one or two baseball games with my dad, and I never got a game of catch---I'd be lying if I said it didn't get dusty whenever I see the end of Field of Dreams). And I think I've unfairly taken it out on my stepdad, a good guy who tries to be like a father to me and normally we get along fine, but I think when it comes to historical father-son bonding moments I tend to shut him out and shoot him down. So this gesture, I think, would really mean a lot to him.

I don't mind Pete but I hate Petey. I've actually decided that come college I'll introduce myself as Pete rather than Peter which I have been called almost my entire life.
Thanks for the comment. I think I like the tinny sound but am not yet sure. I wanted the guitar, especially the high tones to really pop out and so I went with tinny.
P.S. if anyone could tell me what style the rhythm of the main theme represents I'd be forever indebted to you.
Definately a Latin rhythm.

Yeah, it's not really that bad here. I mean, I moved here expecting dirt floors.

Dirt floors are cool though, helps if you need to hide something, just bury it under your bed.
Too much work. I'll just get caught and blame it on my brother.

Oh ok. That's a good move Ray. I'm sure you've been through a lot, and I'm sure showing your step dad that you guys are close would mean a ton to him to. :) Good choice. You may wanna explain to your girl though, if you haven't already. :-/
Panty lines and sporks. I tell ya, this place gets good when certain people step in.
