Dude, I got something like that once. I got really ill on a trip to New York (people blame the huge amounts of caffeine in my system from drinking several Mountain Dews a day for a week, but they are WRONG!) and when I got off the plane my ear was all deaf and stuff.

Apparently I had "Left acute otitis media" and all the tubes in my ear had got full of crap. They gave me some capsules. I cant swallow capsules - ended up pouring the stuff into fruit juice concentrate hehe.

But yeah, took 4 weeks to heal.

FOUR WEEKS.

I hope you haven't got this dude.

I hope not either. On the other hand, I believe that might have been caused by illness combined with odd pressure changes due to you being on the plane. Mine is only happening in one ear and it feels as though water is just blocked up in it. When I cover my right ear, my hearing power is as if I'm covering my left ear too: it's not totally deaf.

Can someone possible explain the whole waffle thing to me please :)

In America, there is a breakfast called "Belgian waffles." Fruit can be added on top of it, or chocolate chips and whipped cream, or just syrup and butter and powdered sugar. They look like this:

Oh, those glorious Belgian waffles ! (http://cabe.hotdogcloning.com/images/journal/IMG_0067.JPG)

Since Jelle is from Belgium, he is Belgian. Since Belgian waffles are from Belgium, Jelle is therefore a waffle, since he is also from Belgium :)

I think he's saying that what he thinks of as a mediocre/average life is one that he isn't enjoying at all. So it's something that can't happen by definition.

I did see it, and took no issues with it and so I didn't feel the need to reply. It seemed to be a good response. I think I just need to get used to it, and I'm well on my way. :) Anyway, I'm rewriting my prog metal songs based on Lord of the Rings to incorporate some of the cool power metal things I've been exposed to (the original version was written two years ago, and strikes me as rather amateur), and to that end I also went out and bought Rhapsody's "Power of the Dragonflame" and have been getting a lot of enjoyment out of it thus far. :) Good to see you again, BTW, I haven't spotted you recently.

It's been a pretty busy time for me. I just got an internship at Pittsburgh Filmmakers and might be able to schmooze my way into ushering at a special premiere of Land of the Dead. Tom Savini will be making all the ushers up as zombies, so I'm pretty psyched about that as you can imagine. I'm such a fanboy. :p

I'm also working on some screenplays, and will be shooting my first movie soon. I just need to complete the script. If anyone's interested, I could post excerpts of what I have so far in YSI.

And of course in between all of that, I'm doing research for my spotlight threads. This weekend is a double feature: Diamond Head and Celtic Frost.

And somewhere in the middle of all, I'm looking for a job to make ends meet. :upset:

Of 2006? Who knows?

It had better be better than Day of the Dead, though. That movie blew extra hard.

What kind of a budget is this movie on? I've seen stills and it doesn't look very high.

I think the real premiere is June 28, but Romero is having a special screening in Pittsburgh on the 22nd. He shot all the previous films in the area, and it served as his base of operations for years. He wanted to film Land of the Dead in the city proper, but alas it was too expensive and he had to go to Toronto.

To compensate, the set design is all modeled after Pittsburgh architecture, which actually lends itself well to Romero's style of suspense.

... Okay, I think I went a bit overboard.

No, of this year. And by Day of the Dead, do you mean the remake or the original?

The budget for this movie is actually decent. I don't really see how it can fail - it's got Romero back directing it (and he's got a real budget to work with), along with Asia Argento and a cameo zombie.

Dawn of the Dead was the one that was remade: I don't think they've remade Day of the Dead yet. I could be wrong, but in any case I'm talking about the original. The overacting in that movie is preposterous, as is the variety of costumes Romero puts on his grey-faced legions. It's just way too much camp to see ghouls dressed in Hawaiian shirts with the sunglasses and hat still on, or to see a zombie teenager still dressed in his full football uniform including helmet. Just silly.

I think the subplot with Bub is kind of silly though. The "science" surrounding their explanations for why zombies are animate even though they're dead is rather weak. And the movie isn't really that scary. There's just too many zombies, and they are all dressed in retarded clothes. The story could have been much cooler, but in ways it was also a retread of "Dawn of the Dead," except instead of a mall, they're stuck in a boring bunker. And the ending? Give me a ****ing break.

Now, to be honest, I think the remade Night of the Living Dead is terrifying. The setting is very eerie, and the zombies move incredibly slowly (one of the reasons I was less than satisfied with the remade "Dawn of the Dead.") They're all very gory and disgusting, and the atmosphere is incredibly eerie.

And IMO, regardless of how scary it is, I consider 28 Days later to be a brilliant movie. Thoughts?

It's interesting how things like this work in zombie horror.

Romero's mythos of uber-creepiness and suspense that eats you alive requires the zombies to be slow, shambling juggernauts.

Conversely, you have more action-oriented movies like 28 Days Later that require something speedier.

The Dawn of the Dead remake has to be divorced from the former and taken as the latter to be enjoyed. It's all in the stylistic approach. You can't have it both ways.

Interestingly, pre-dating Night of the Living Dead was an Italian film called Zombie! that played off a lot of different world cultures' perceptions of zombies. The creatures in this film were basically brainless killing machines, but not only could they run, they could also swim, leap, and some even flew. One of the most famous scenes in the film apparently is a zombie fighting a shark.

I haven't seen it myself. Yet. But a friend of mine at college owns a copy so I plan on watching it this Fall.

The locations were what made it amazing. The gradual discovery of what was going on, combined with the obvious mayhem that had ensued throughout England. That scene where they're driving to Manchester and the whole skyline is in flames just rocks.

The zombies in that film weren't immortal, however: not "living dead." But that wasn't the point anyway: I feel like that movie is a great human nature study.

I enjoy the recent Dawn of the Dead mostly because of the way the humans behave. The scenes where they're interacting with one another are more suspenseful than the ones with the zombies.

One thing I never got though: that dude in the gunshop. He could have killed so many of the zombies, and they wouldn't have even noticed. He could have spent all his time just firing away at them. I bet he could have cleaned out at least a thousand. Would have made it that much easier.

Has anyone seen the Director's Cut special features? The fake newscasts are amusing/eerie. There's a really ****ed-up "home video" where three jocks shut a fourth jock in with a female teenage zombie, with the intent to tape a rape I think. But they don't know that they bite.

There wasn't anything particularly wrong with the part with them meeting the army guys itself, just that from that point on it took a big nosedive in quality. Up until then I remember it being a pretty interesting take on a zombie film, and enjoying it, and after that it just bored me.

I also didn't like the bit where the main guy (I forget his name; it's been a while since I've seen the film) wandered off on his own and ended up having to kill a little kid zombie.

Personally, my big complaint with 28 Days Later, was the fact that they actually gave the zombies an explanation. The trend in modern horror it seems is to make everything a **** virus. I can understand where this came from (mass panic over biological weapons these days), but when you start trying to explain monsters in the same vein as something that can be cured with chicken soup and orange juice... :upset:

It's just so much creepier when there is no explanation. You struggle to find one, but can't. That's so much cooler.

I kind of agree. I didn't like the fact that they could just wait the zombies out and let them starve to death. It seems like such an easy way to do it.

Definitely.

Even more annoying is people who see Dawn of the Dead, and then complain that there was no explanation. A friend of mine actually did that, and I had to kick him a bit.

EDIT: I liked the fact that when they made Shaun of the Dead, they recognised that they shouldn't be given an explanation; even went so far as to have a news snippet at the end along the lines of "claims that the zombies were a result of a infectious rage-virus have been dismissed as bullsh-".

It wasn't so much that it was easy. It was the fact that we got answers.

I'm of the Gothic school of horror fiction. It's much scarier when we don't get an answer. Even works outside of the Gothic tradition focus on ambiguity. Take Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" for example. Excellent short story. Chilling social commentary. And no explanation is ever given for the eponymous lottery.

But also take a look at Neo-Gothic film like Halloween and Psycho. Even when our protagonists attempt an explanation, we find out there's more to it than they ever imagined. Instead of an explanation, what we're really getting is a slight scratching at the surface. We think we've seen the monster, but all we really saw was one of its claws.

That's where real horror comes from.

One other gripe about the remake is the fact that even though they said this wasn't going to be like George Romero's vision, they tried to integrate the social commentary from the original in anyway.

When the "This place must have been important to them," line was spoken in the original, it had meaning. Today, it's just another "Tell us something we don't already know," moment.

It's a matter of finding people that actually want to play what I write. At an artsy school like the one I go to, everyone's into indie rock, not metal. And there's a surprisingly low proportion of instrument players to begin with: lots of folk strummers, but not many capable drummers or bassists that aren't already in like three bands.

Dang, well that's never good.

Also, I got contemplative and philosopher-y last night as I tried to sleep, and suddenly it hit me that perhaps the meaning of life--our purpose in life--is to find what makes us truly happy, because true happiness is what matters most in life. I realize that right now it's just a base theory, and you all can probably tear holes through it, but I think I may have something here.

I also realized today that I want to be a lawyer. However, I do not have the motivation (or money) to get through law school. So you understand the pickle I am in.

Well, I lost my election for Class president. On the brightside, all my supporters (about half the grade) decided with me that we would simply decide that the teacher who runs our class office had modified the votes because I am known for being someone who screws around a lot. OUr class president for freshman and sophmore year (he stopped running because he hates the teacher. He would win every year, hands down) was hated by this guy because he was extremely popular in an untraditional way, funny and screwed around. The girl in office for the last two years is well liked but basically a stupid girl in terms of how she approaches life. Hours of homework everynight, does what she is told always, always looks on the good side of everything. She'll do well in life, but somewhere along the line she'll hit a major roadbump and change. I think. She is built for success.

Anyway, after my denial rant, I lost and it's fine.

I think I would like a larger school. More ability to pick and choose who you associate with. On the bright side, my school get's a ton of money (was known for a while as the private public school in the area. No longer accepts tuition students because it was filling up so fast) so I have a lot of opportunities I might no otherwise have.

Then again, magicbus goes to high school in Detroit Rock City. And High Voltage could be in LA or something for all I know.

I liked my school size though. It was big enough where you could ignore people you didn't like but small enough so that you could connect with people.

There are somewhere around 1100 students in my school here in wild 'n wonderful, smalltown West Virginia. There was almost twice that in the '70's when the steel industry was stronger.

Who think's 'Tender should just ban that retard jazzfenderboy? He has made like 10 threads against the rules and he's still around? Why?

Also, the new Avenged Sevenfold album is amazing, it is very good...

People who doubt the album due to The Beast and the Harlot really need to check this album out, it doesn't really sound like that vocal wise. It has great guitar work though, fairly long songs (last 5 tracks are 7-9 minutes long and there is no track minus one under 5 minutes, which it is like 4:58 heh). Also there is a few songs with a string section and a bit of choir work. Strenght Of The World is a very epic song too, starts with a violin and string section and ends with a very loud string section. Also Strenght Of The World has a bit of a western theme too it, with the cliched single guitar chord on an acoustic strummed slowly, rattles and various other old western movie sounds...

Very cool album, I suggest for all of you to check it out, it sounds nothing like their other stuff, these guys are amazing musicians.
