The Godfather, Pulp Fiction, Do The Right Thing, The Shawshank Redemption, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Big Lebowski, Fight Club, Jackie Brown, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Hoop Dreams would be my top ten in no particular order. With honorable mentions to GoodFellas, Apocalypse Now, He Got Game, Trainspotting, Fargo, and Spinal Tap.

Yes, Lynch happens to be my favorite film maker. I look for more in movies than good plots and action; I relish in the cinemtography, symbolism, etc. Lynch is a mastermind at creating atmospheres and different, bizarre, surrealistic worlds. I don't think a Tarantino fan would understand.

Silly nerds talking about Star Wars.

In other news.. It's so ****ING hot here in Seattle. It's about 92-93.. theres's a serious heat wave where we are. It's supposed to be gone by Monday. My house doesn't have airconditioning.. so every hour or so i put my feet into a freezing cold ice bath. I'm dying.. Seattle was not meant to be this hot.

I just hope it's not this hot tomorrow at FOLKLIFE!! Weeee!!!

Heh heh... every time I'm in Seattle, you guys are always in the middle of a drought. One time, I came in the summer, over a course of time where it hadn't rained in eighteen days. 90-95 everyday, but what's nice is that it was 0% humidity. I can't speak from experience if this is the kind of humidity you are currently having, however.

Deep Blue Sea was still much, much better than Remember The Titans.

/stifles laughter

Remember The Titans was a horrible movie, but it's infuriating, patronizing **** with the most implausible football and non-football scenes in any serious sports movie.

Why, because of the racial tensions? Serious question. I'm not sure where you're coming from. But come on, it was in the South, and that town was small. High school football was the ONLY thing that kept that city alive. Think of the era that that movie was supposed to be shot in, and all the events in the world that were taking place.

No one can deny, though, that one of the best football movies of all-time is Brian's Song.

Well being a white man I am embarassed by Vanilla Ice, but I'm not complaining about him, now am I?

Haha.

Yeah, what would I know about being stereotyped.

Jesus Christ, how many times are you going to play the race card here?

Not everyone is tryin' to bring the brothas down (well, except madey, maybe). In your world, fine, I don't live in Chicago or Boston. But I live in ****ing Detroit, where there are plenty of black men and women living in the city.

The difference here is that a majority of them- neighbors, classmates, the Mayor- embrace being African-American, instead of saying "Boohoo I'm black everyone's tryin' to bring the brotha down, so I'm going to act like a condescending asshole on the Internet and attack everyone's opinions while trying to establish that anything that runs through my fingers is certifiable fact."

Well, should you choose to go into politics like you say you will, then you're going to need to have all those skills.

You insulted people without provocation.
Of course I did. That's what I do.

Get the hell out of here, then, you prick. Shape up or shut the hell up.

That makes the first one I've seen who likes both.

I don't mind Adam Sandler['s first two movies] but I have severe doubts that he can pull of the role as well as Burt Reynolds (who actually played football at Florida State, which is how the football scenes worked so well in the original). It also looks like they've also MTV'd the football scenes (read: Over-the-top hits and stupid camera angles). And the presence of Nelly and Tracy Morgan is never an encouraging thing.

And the presence of Burt Reynolds is as if they re-made The Godfather with Jimmy Fallon as Michael, Vin Diesel as Sonny, Ben Affleck as Tom Hagen, and a mostly out-of-work Al Pacino as Don Vito.

Alright.

I walked to the video store by my house with my family and dog. The place was picked over, and the special was four movies for seven bucks, so we made do with what they had:

National Treasure (just saw it tonight... wasn't too bad, just kinda unrealistic in... a lot of parts)

Elektra (this is to see if it's as bad as people said it was, even though Jennifer Garner is pretty... but she's lost stock now that she's a little preggie with Ben Affleck )

Ocean's Twelve (original was good, from what I remember)

Flight of the Phoenix (my dad wanted it, don't ask... but is it any good?)

Actually, who has seen the aforementioned movies, and are they as good/bad as people claim they are?

And I'm surprised at all the positive reviews for The Longest Yard... I may go see that this weekend.

Yeah, it's called "Unleashed." Basically, he was trained as a child to act as a dog trained to kill under this Russian mobster's command... but eventually, he runs into a blind Morgan Freeman, who plays piano. Li listens to the song and then starts forming his own behavior patterns and so on, and he starts breaking away from the mobster. The only way he can control Li is if he has a collar on him, but when Li stops him from putting the collar on, a bunch of asskicking ensues.

At least, that's what I've gotten out of the previews.

TSG compares the first The Longest Yard to the remake (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/050527)

TSG on Ocean's 12:

Rented "Ocean's Twelve" over the weekend. The first one was good-natured, well-done eye candy and ended up being surprisingly rewatchable on cable. The second one was incoherent, unfunny, self-referential, boring, ridiculous – in fact, if I had to write a blurb for it on a movie poster, it would look like this:

'A train wreck that's almost unfathomably terrible!'
–Bill Simmons, ESPN.com

Holy cow...doesn't look good.

I haven't seen any of the movies, actually...Flight of the Phoenix looks kind of intriguing, though.

Also, I just Netflix'd Falling Down and The Killing Fields. What do y'all think of those two flicks.

YDLoad: Along those same lines, I have no problem with implausibly stupid movies like Independence Day or the Ernest movies, simply because they know they're implausibly stupid. It's when a movie aspires to be serious and is implausibly stupid that I get angry.

It's the old swing song that was played on the old Chip's Ahoy commercials, and I used to listen to that song as a kid...but completely forgot about it.

Also if any one has any other stuff by Benny Goodman, send it this way please, it would be most appreciated. That would also go for any big band/swing music as well...

In Red Sox-related news, Byung-Hun Kim fell to 0-4 today for the Rockies, giving up five runs in five innings to the Cubs. God does that guy suck...I can't believe the Sox actually got a live body for him.

**** man, I just saw one of the reasons why investigative journalists need to die. I'm serious. I would happily watch one of the people they harass pull out a gun and shoot the bastards. The reason?

They were doing an expose on the Jehovah's Witnesses. Basically, they claimed every single JW was either a child molester, or had been abused by a child molester. They also twisted pretty much every single word that one of the Elders said, to make him look like a monster. For example (Note: This same show did a piece on the evil of gays about 2 weeks ago):

Reporter: "You said he was a homosexual".
Elder: "No, I said by being molested, he had been part of a homosexual act".
Reporter: "Being homosexual isn't a bad thing".
Elder: "For other people, but our religion doesn't allow it."
Reporter: "It wasn't a homosexual act anyway, it was molestation. He was being molested."
Elder: "But I am not claiming he is a homosexual, I am stating he was part of a homosexual act. Therefore, he needs to be cleansed to come back to the congregation."
Reporter: "Other mainstream religions allow homosexuality".

The man's response was then cut off, so that the obvious response of "name one mainstream religion that allows it" wasn't aired. Instead we get the reporter stating by himself, "Obviously, the Jehovah's Witness church is corrupt, as they willingly allow children to be molested."

A bit later, we had this delightful monologue by the reporter.

"The 60, 000 Jehovah's in Australia believe they are a seperate people. They don't vote, don't celebrate birthdays or Christmas, aren't allowed to enter military service, and can only marry within the church. Also, unlike mainstream religions, the Jehovah's Witnesses believe they are the only true faith..."

What. The. ****...

Has this reporter ever heard of the Crusades? As far as I know, it was because two mainstream religions believed they were the only true faith. And most religions, e.g Catholicism don't allow people to marry outside the faith, and plenty of other mainstream religions don't celebrate Christmas.
This reporter needs to die.

In America lots of things are terrible.

The great irony of America is this: we want the kick-*** social services that they get in Europe for free, like Medicare, social security, welfare, bankruptcy services, and disability pensions without having to pay heavy amounts of taxes. Let's be honest here: the BIGGEST division between the liberals and the conservatives is this issue of taxes. I have a feeling far less people would give a **** about this whole abortion thing (and ESPECIALLY stem cell research) if the parties didn't use it as a very public screen for the real issue that the parties are at loggerheads over, which is the paying of taxes.

The root of this? The way our public school system teaches us about the American Revolution. I'm convinced that it plants some sort of subliminal stigma in our heads. In the Northeast, and pretty much everywhere else I'm sure, the issues surrounding the American Revolution are dumbed down to essentially this: "The evil King wanted to tax the American people without asking them if it was all right. The Americans didn't WANT to pay taxes. So they rose up in revolution against the Evil King George III to fight for their right to not pay taxes."

Do Americans even realize what taxes do? The way agencies such as the IRS are labeled in the media are as heartless machines taking homes away from jobless 80-year-olds, so the fact that taxes are responsible for the availibility of SO MANY COMFORTS THAT WE TAKE FOR GRANTED gets lost. And the reason our systems like Social Security are so ****ed up is because the American people don't want to pay enough taxes, and so there simply isn't enough money to fund those things. And then we bitch and moan about how everything in America is all ****ed up. It's ridiculous, because we're so spoiled and yet because of that, every social service is paradoxically substandard compared to the entire rest of the civilized world. The government is NOT a business and so requires donations, and when Americans don't want to donate, we get bull**** like Bush trying to privatise Social Security. Liberals cry foul when that issue comes up on the agenda, but if you think about it, how many other choices does Bush have when he's faced with such an idiotic, stubborn populace and he has enough self-preservation instinct to not want to be impeached?

The way the Civil War is taught to us, on the other hand, varies quite widely throughout the country. In the Northeast, the Civil War happened because of slavery, and is seen as a proactive approach on the part of the Union to ending it. In the South, it happened because of states rights, and is seen as a proactive approach on the part of the Confederacy to preserve them. This enhances the basic division between the two groups of taxpayers by bringing the issues of race, religion, and rights into the question, and so we also have our national bitterness bred into our bones by the fifth grade. If we could have a progressive attitude without all these retarded and divisive ways of viewing our past I'd think we'd be a lot better off. Unfortunately a reliance on common sense is not the prideful American's strongest suit. He'd rather let his belief about what's true take the wheel more often than the facts about what's true.

Agreed, on the fact that the same kind of thing happens in Australia these days. We used to be a British society, so we had all the benefits of Europe, in a much more pleasant environment, and with a completely industrious, well-cared for workforce. Then U.S. ideals like "not working your best" and "complaining about taxes" invaded, and we are slowly being turned into a North American clone. It's depressing, and I don't blame the people in North America for it.

Well, basically, most of Australia was actually penal colonies/ free colonies, which then banded into 5 states, before joining in the Federation Of Australia in 1901. The people who moved here from the U.K. were middle to upper class people who wanted to be British in a new land of opportunity. They was never a drive to distinguish themselves from the "foul opressors", such as the North American colonists changing the spelling of words, and changing the size of various standards. E.g. The U.S. gallon is something like 1.25 of the English gallon.

At the risk of sounding pompous, my nation never was retarded enough to have a war, before going to the bargaining table. We actually realised the outcome was the same, so we just went straight to the treaty.

You don't sound pompous. I find it silly that America did things like that, and it's very depressing that the UK has little ability to stand up for itself in the modern world arena. Me and Bartender talked about this a while ago: ever since the US bailed Britain out of economical failure after WWII with a 50 billion dollar loan, the US treated the sudden subservience of the British pound to the American dollar as a literal working relationship between the nations. As a result, the US image of them is as the most powerful lackey we've got, the bouncer crying "yes boss!" to every crusade America wants them to take part in, from Communism to jihad.

On the other hand, many of the first colonists on the U.S. territory did NOT want to be British in a land of opportunity. They wanted to be left alone. So the fact that our situation produced war wasn't neccesarily retarded, and considering the time gap between Australia and the US I wouldn't say the two could be easily related. That could be my lack of knowledge talking, but I'm just going off of what you were saying.

Anyway, I just saw The Longest Yard. I was expecting it to be iffy, but it was definitely worthwhile. Yeah, there are a number of pop culture references, and there are a number of previous Adam Sandler references (namely "The Waterboy," since it was about football [foosball?] anyway), but it was a good show.

No spoilers from me, no worries there.

Has anyone here ever seen The Rookie? It's an 80s movie (although it might have been made in the early 90s, it's still got that 80s movie feel) within the buddy-cop genre. Judging by the name, you can already tell that Clint Eastwood is the rough veteran and Charlie Sheen is his new partner. Very predictable but still a fun explosion-filled ride.
