Maybe it's because those movies are all about how the white man keeps the brother man down - even in a galaxy far, far away. Check this ****. You got cracker farm-boy Luke Skywalker, Nazi poster boy - blond hair, blue eyes. And then youve got Darth Vader: the blackest brother in the galaxy. Nubian God. Now Vader, hes a spiritual brother, down with the force and all that ****. Then this cracker (Skywalker) gets his hands on a light-saber, and the boy decides hes gonna run the ****ing universe - gets a whole Klan of whites together, and theyre gonna bust up Vaders's hood, the Death Star. Now what the **** do you call that! Gentrification. Theyre gonna drive out the black element, to make the galaxy quote, unquote "safe" for white folks. Jedis the most insulting installment, because Vaders beautiful, black visage is sullied when he pulls off his mask to reveal a feeble, crusty old white man! Theyre trying to tell us that deep inside, we all want to be white!

No, no, go on. I love being stereotyped.

He alienated himself from everyone in the band except the drummer and turned into an unbelievably pompous asshole.

He wrote and recorded all the guitar and bass parts for Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by himself because he didn't think James Iha and their bassist were good enough to contribute to the album (which he said in so many words).

His utter self-indulgence carried the band into a downward spiral both personally (the band broke up because no one could stand him) and musically (all of their albums get progressively more pretentious and crappy as their career goes on).

Short answer would be that I think picking a top three seems impossible :-/ Longer answer would be similar, but with more reasoning why. It depends how you measure greatest, for a start, and then there's just that three is too few for an entire century; you'd have to have someone (preferably several) to represent blues, and then jazz (and yeah, Miles would probably be a given), etc. I don't think it could be done, basically. Or more accurately, it's too difficult for me to want to try.

Greatest musicians (talent and inspiration) would be perhaps... Mike Oldfield and Thom Yorke.

Greatest influences would be Frank Zappa and Bob Dylan.

Greatest entertainers would be the crooners (Sinatra, Martin et al) and Elvis Presley.

I think that it would have to be a combination of talent, vision, impact, influence, and recognition--which would ultimately make it impossible to narrow it down to just three. But what if we were to expand it to a top five or ten? That would be feasible, I think.

My sister is very very mainstream, if that helps. Tyrese, Mario, Guerilla Black, etc. I'm not really impressed by those artists.

Favorite tracks on Illmatic in order:
1. N.Y. State of Mind
2. Represent
3. Memory Lane (Sittin' in da Park)
4. One Time 4 Your Mind
5. It Ain't Hard To Tell
6. Life's a Bitch
7. One Love
8. The World Is Yours
9. Halftime
10. The Genesis

Tyrese and Mario are barely rap, I think. And Guerilla Black is a pale, pale rip-off of Biggie.

As for a top ten, here's something me and a friend hashed out online:
Miles
Bob Dylan
James Brown
Phil Specter
B.B. King
Lou Reed
Chuck Berry/Elvis Presley
John Lennon
Brian Eno
John Coltrane

All right, here goes. This is the post I originally wrote before I thought that you guys might not be pleased if I gave away specifics.

AHEM:STAR WARS SPOILERS AHEAD!

I have just seen the new Star Wars movie. It was one of the most disappointing viewing experiences of my short life thus far, and this when I was EXPECTING a bad movie. It went beyond the realm of simple things like incompetent moviemaking (which there was plenty of) and entered the realm of offensive, disrespectful banality, pissing all over three movies that deserve to not even be associated with this so-called "prequel."

Partial list of offenses:
1.) Incredibly understated acting in scenes not called for that at all, where planets are being destroyed and ships are disintegrating and Ewan MacGregor still almost cheerfully exclaims ridiculous statements like "It's alright, we're still flying half a ship."
2.) Emperor Palpatine, the best thing about this movie, nevertheless in parts being reduced to ridiculous voice-synthesizer nonsense that make his lines laughable rather than menacing.
3.) I'm sick and tired of Yoda's sentence structure. Almost every single reference to the original movies in these prequels has been reduced to a gimmick rather than a character definition, Yoda's way of speaking is positively one of them: "Backwards run the sentences until reeling the mind is."
4.) Blatant ignorance of continuity, even regarding the films in the actual Star Wars trilogy: apparently George Lucas was so angry about not being able to direct Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi he didn't even watch them. Otherwise, how can Leia state in Return of the Jedi that she remembered her mother when Padme died in childbirth?
5.) Other gimmicky crap such as piecemeal, totally unneccesary appearences by Chewbacca and other assorted Wookies.
6.) Retarded droids. How can they possibly be a threat to the Republic when they're such idiots? Watch General Grevious especially. He was a grevious threat all right: a grevious threat to my ability to take the movie seriously. Unintentional irony abounds in this movie in more than this way, too, let me tell you.
7.) Lucas cannot write a love scene to save his life. The stilted delivery of nearly all dialogue between Anakin and Padme induces laugh after laugh, and they are not made in good humor either. They were painful.
8.) This entire movie is an example of why computer effects suck. When absolutely NOTHING in the movie is real--not even the god**** COUCHES that the characters are SITTING ON--the reason for the actors' terrible acting becomes apparent, and the blame then rests with the director.
9.) They never really managed to explain to me how stormtroopers developed different personalities from one another (not to mention American accents) if they're all still clones of Jango Fett (who ties Jar Jar Binks for worst possible character addition to these movies IMO).
10.) Why in the hell is it called the Clone Wars when the bad guys are idiot droids? No war is named after the good guys, for Christ’s sake.
11.) Anakin’s lines have matured slightly, I’ll grant him that: instead of saying “I’m just SO MAD!” three times, he says “I’m just SO FRUSTRATED!” two times.
10.) Dressing Hayden Christiansen in the Darth Vader suit was totally inappropriate. And funny. Why? Because this Darth Vader is a good five or six inches shorter than the man who wore Darth Vader's suit in the original movies. It shows: a wobbly oversized helmet on a puny-suited body. Apparently they ran out of effects budget for fixing little detail.
11.) Even more innappropriate, and the worst case of blasphemy: instead of calling up James Earl Jones one more time to deliver Darth Vader's grand total of THREE LINES just for nostalgia's sake(in a movie which friggin’ RELIES on nostalgia, rather than skill), what should be the most awe-inspiring, terrifying moment of transformation of Anakin into Vader is ruined, in favor of putting Hayden Christiansen's voice through a voice synthesizer designed to emulate the tone James Earl Jones's Vader voice had, but retaining all of Christiansen's crappy vocal inflections.

I HATED THIS MOVIE. I apologize to people like ArrestThisMan, who I know have enjoyed it. I also apologize for the spoilers. If desired, I shall edit them out. I’m sorry. I do not recommend this piece of crap at all. Better than the first two prequels? Yes. Darker? Yes. But I was right: even that PG-13 rating is just another element of the hype. But this movie just made me so depressed I can’t even describe it: how can the man with the vision to create Star Wars create such amateur **** based off of his own creation? Yet there I was, watching dung with George Lucas's name on it for two and a half hours. There were two redeeming scenes in the movie: Palapatine's seduction of Anakin was great, as was Anakin's fit of anger with Obi-Wan on the volcanic planet when he totally loses it. But that’s it. I’m sorry. I’m going to pretend these prequels were never made, and I recommend that everyone else does the same. I apologize for the rant. If you are a true Star Wars fan, viewing this film will only upset you.

As for a top ten, here's something me and a friend hashed out online:
Miles
Bob Dylan
James Brown
Phil Specter
B.B. King
Lou Reed
Chuck Berry/Elvis Presley
John Lennon
Brian Eno
John Coltrane

That's a pretty good list. You know if Rolling Stone or someone made it, they would have Eminem and Kurt Cobain

But you and your friend have beaten the system with that fine piece of work. But what about Russell Simmons?

Illmatic
05-23-2005, 01:27 AM
He's top 20/top 25 I'd imagine; top 50 at least.

Rolling Stone's top 10 would be:

John Lennon
Kurt Cobain
Elvis Presley
Eminem
Madonna
Paul McCartney
Bob Dylan
Michael Jackson
Mick Jagger
Ozzy Osbourne

VH1's would be no different.

EDIT: Now here's a question. How come every Girls Gone Wild video is market as "THE HOTTEST GIRLS GONE WILD VIDEO YET!!!!" when they're all basically the same thing?

And how clever is the founder of that company? "I have an idea...let's film drunk college girls flashing their tits and making out with each other, and then sell the tapes. Think there's a market for that?" Guy's probably a millionaire now.

I think that it would have to be a combination of talent, vision, impact, influence, and recognition--which would ultimately make it impossible to narrow it down to just three. But what if we were to expand it to a top five or ten? That would be feasible, I think.

A top ten would be much more possible, yeah.

Eno was the godfather of electronic music, so he deserves some recognition.

He was the godfather of ambient, so he deserves recognition for that. But if you're going for electronic godfathers, you'd end up going back to Kraftwerk (or, if you think you should go back further, then to people like Stockhausen and Varese. Maybe even Theremin).

But all kidding aside, the movie was pretty good. I totally didn't see Anakin going to the dark side coming (I said "coming")!

The fact that Lucas (Geaorge that is) doesn't know his own universe didn't make it that bad, I enjoyed it even if there is no continuity with a lot of it.

Because I've already seen all the episodes and it's all the same humor over and over again. They basically just use the same jokes in different situations, and it got old really fast.

Tool, to me, is a band that consists of:

-a good rhythm section (Carey and Chancellor)
-guitar playing that borders on inept
-unintentionally hilarious lyrics and vocals

Also, I have an avatar/user title combo inspired by the Queen song "Flash", which I think is one of the ten cheesiest songs ever recorded.

Acid is actually one of the worse drugs I ever did.... it lasts too long, and generally doesn't make you feel good, sometimes you get visuals, but they aren't of a real pleasant nature.... at first, it feels all cool and speedy, you're like "wow this is awesome", after a couple of hours, you're like "why won't this go away? why can't I sleep?"

Honestly, if you want to trip, take shrooms, much more fun, make you giggle, don't last as long... or my fave, ecstacy, the best feeling you will ever have for three hours.... ahhh brings back memories

On this board (miseriacantare.com/board. Its an AFI board, but no one really talks about AFI, just randomness) we had this huge problem with this dude that was really conceited and posted a million different pictures of himself on the "Post Your Mug" thread. Good man, good man. Yeah, I love Bodom. I got into them quite some time ago. My brother's friend introduced them to me when I was in 8th grade because I was into Maiden and Metallica, etc...good stuff, man. What can I say about the guitar work that hasn't been said (by Bodom fans, I mean)?

Ha, I stole this avatar.

I got into them, maybe....quite a few months ago. The first song I heard was Lake Bodom. I'm a guitarist so, it had a big impact. :D I got Follow the Reaper first and been a hardcore fan ever since. I can't wait until the new album comes out...its going to be rad. Its called Are You Dead Yet?

(I stole that avatar too, *wink*. Also, I'm female. You all seem to call me a "he". Except for munky, he knows by now.)

Yeah, I know about the new album, can't wait. Yeah, I'm a guitarist as well so it pretty much caught my attention.

Sorry about the mix-up. Most people on here are dudes, so I assumed you were one :D

Don't worry about it, I think the majority of girls aren't metalheads anyway. Funny though, isn't it?

Since I've been here I've actually gotten into some other Bodomesque bands. Kalmah is really good, I hadn't heard about them before I came here. Now that I think about it, I've been influenced by this board. I now listen to Meshuggah, In Flames (more than I used to), Imperanon, Sepultura and whatever other **** is requested on the YSI thread. :thumb: It's awesome.

Anyways, hello. I went and visited some of my high school teachers this morning, and that made for a good trip. They were all willing to talk for a bit, which was nice. I told some of my stories from uni and they told me about the school year there. Sixteen teachers are retiring at the end of the year, which is a lot, even for a large high school like mine was.

One of my teachers asked me, "If you could change one thing about high school, what would it be?"

I didn't have an answer.

As soon as I sat in the car on the way home, it came to me. So I drove home, wrote this teacher a letter, delivered it, and went home again. It seems a bit open-ended, and now that I think about it, I'm a bit concerned as to what this teacher will do with it. But no matter. I was satisfied with my answer, and if it comes back and bites me in the ***, then so be it.

I can drive! :)

Congratulations. I remember my road test, I got three points (I guess this is the equivalent of a "minor" in Europe? If so, then twenty-five minors = failing.

Anyways, I couldn't parallel park (two points) and I accelerated too fast in the acceleration lane (well, it was a very steep ramp, so that's why :p) for another point.

I am a safe driver. Honestly. I admittedly don't know much about cars at all, but I'm a safe driver.

Again, congrats. :chugwithnon-alcoholicbeveragesoyoustaysoberwhiledriving:

It's pretty safe to say that everyone who posts in the genre forums has been exposed to new music and/or has become a great influence in one way or another.

Anyone who says otherwise is a liar :)

Sweet! Congrats on passing the driving test! Unfortunately, I can't take mine yet. Insurance reasons.

I'm about to go off to Italy for three weeks. I just got In Flames (Soundtrack to Your Escape) and HIM (Love Metal); somethings to keep me occupied on the plane.
Thanks :)
Are you just going on holiday to Italy?

Sort of. Its more like a two-years-early-graduation-present. My grandparents go all the time, (this will be their 4th time) and I'm hitching a ride. Rome, Naples, Pisa, Florence, the works. It'll be cool. I leave in a couple days. I'm hoping to hit a kick *** music store, see if they stock any metal I can't get here.

Trust me dude, if I had enough cash to buy Hatebreeder right now, I'd already have it. I have enough songs from it (Silent Night, Bodom Night and Black Widow and the songs off of Tokyo Warhearts) to keep me occupied until I get it.
