I have a couple Chevelle questions about the song "Still Running" (to anyone who'd know the answer):
1. The version that's on The Punisher OST... was this just a "demo" version of the song? Or did they just re-do the song for TToT(CDUI)? The latter version is far more superior to me.
2. Does anyone know what the disclaimer at the beginning of the song is? Either my speakers really suck, or my ears do :(

Wow.
So one of my mom's co-workers' daughter refuses to watch "24" because she feels it is racist--because the bad guys this season are Muslims.
Yes, the show where the BLACK president for the first three seasons was undoubtedly the classiest, most well-spoken, and most honorable character on the show...is racist.
Where the Hispanic head of CTU for the first three seasons, who was at worst the second-most competent employee after Jack...is racist.
Gotta love it.

It bothers me when Blacks (or any people) complain about Huck Finn being racist, when Jim (the former slave who escapes with Huck) is clearly the person with the strongest morals and character in the novel. It seems to me that Twain only used the n-word to accurately portray the the society of that region at the time.
And I do understand (or at least attempt to understand) how offensive the n-word is, but it just seems like people saw it and started screaming racist before even reading the book. All the white people in the novel are basically horrible people, with a few minor exceptions.

It's well-documented that Mark Twain was highly critical of our racist society. Educated people know that Huck Finn was not a racist novel; it just depicted what society was like back then.

That's how it is with people in New England. They're liberal because everyone in the region is, but they're no less ignorant than anyone else--they rely on racial stereotypes too, more than anyone else in the country thinks they do.

That's true to an extent. I guess people lose sight of the fact that it was only Northern legislation that was relatively receptive of blacks back in the day. However, there are cities like New York, Boston, and Pittsburgh of the Northeast that do not exactly have a great history with minorities.

Nope, as far as I know, this is a one off track. They're usually, very generally, indie rock (their sound seems to be renowned as really hard to pin down properly). Usually I think J Mascis (the guitarist) does the vocals as well, but I'm not sure. It's the guy who does backing vocals on this track anyway though (in the background on the chorus), whoever it is.

Good evening all. I just returned to MX, after a massive load of university coursework. Wow. Just wow. Too much stuff in too little a time. Ah well.
So, the highlight was cutting open a whole chicken and cane toad in a kind of "open dissection" (no aim, just investigating inner workings). Well, the chicken had crapped itself when they broke its neck, and so it stank to high heaven. Also, once I had broken its ribs and exposed the visceral mass, I accidentally split one of the pre-formed eggs, releasing the foulest rotten egg odour I have smelt in a long while.
Despite that, birds are really interesting, so my lab partner and I amused ourselves finding and investigating the airsacs/lungs, and also making the wings beat by pulling on the pectoralis minorus muscles.
Also, the cane toads heart was beating when we open the chest, despite it being frozen for several days. We attributed it to the nerve endings being excited by the metal probe we pinned them back with. Even so, it was morbidly fun and entertaining.
What's happened on MX in my absence? (Monday Night Mayhem thread may be done tonight  )

I'm in the process of deciding what modules to take next year. I thought it I had it all figured out, until I realised that the columns signified they were in different semesters, and we couldn't just chooce freely. Meaning what I would have chosen was an 80/40 split, which isn't allowed. Since I have little else to do, I'll type out my choices, see what you people think.
1. Formal Logic or Philosophy of Language
2. Ancient Philosophy (Plato, Aristotle) or Modern Philosophy (Hume, Leibniz)
3. Political Philosophy or Moral Philosophy
4. Epistemology or Theories & Observations in Science
5. Realism and Anti-Realism or Philosophy of Religion
6. Sartre and Nietzsche or Media Ethics and Philosophy of Sport*
*two separate modules, but they add up to the same as Sartre & Nietzsche.
The annoying thing is, I have to choose six in total, but three have to come from each 'column' (each side of the or), and I have to choose one from each of the first five or-pairings, 1-5. :(.
Does this make sense? :-/

I like the sound of number five though.
Well, the latter half of #6 doesn't seem like it'd appease your interests :)
This is what I'd decide for you based on what I know about your uni studies (assuming I understood what you wrote, anyway):
Ancient Philosophy
Political Philosophy
Realism and Anti-Realism
///
Philosophy of Language
Moral Philosophy
Theories and Observations in Science (I'm seeing this as an elective, and not as a philosophy course... but I'm probably incorrect)

Which one? Realism and Anti-Realism or Philosophy of Religion?
Bartender, definitely do anything involving Nietzche, and I'd say both moral philosophy and philosophy of language sound interesting as well, although that may just be me.
Yeah, I'd been planning to do the Sartre and Nietzsche course since the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, the only two that I can't take in combination is 6, i.e. Sartre/Nietzsche and Philosophy of Sport*/Media Ethics.
*the name is misleading; it's not really focused on sport. I don't like sport.
Philosophy of language sounds like it could be very cool (if it's what I think it is, i.e linguistics related).
Yeah, I've always liked language, so I was thinking of doing it. All I've been hearing from people that have already done it though, is along the lines of "avoid it like the plague". Supposed to be really torturous. I really don't like Formal Logic (it's interesting, and fun when you get to a high enough level, but I'm not good enough at it to risk taking it to a higher level) though, so I think I'll be taking Language out of those two.
Incidentally, when do you think you'll have your Other FA done?

I would have thought that too, but I've read up on the Philosophy of Sport, and though I don't like Sport for the most part, the name of the module is misleading. It seems to be mostly about game theory - the nature of games and play (rules and so on), sportsmanship and honour, the ideology of Olympism (kalos kagathos), etc, which is all really interesting.
Plus, the guy who teaches both Philosophy of Sport and Media Ethics is my personal tutor, who is totally awesome.
Theories and Observations in Science (I'm seeing this as an elective, and not as a philosophy course... but I'm probably incorrect)
It's not actually, it's one of the Philosophy core module options. I'd have thought it'd be an elective too, but no. It covers, apparently;
# What is the relationship between scientific theories, models and the phenomena created in the lab?
# Have we inherited a distorted view of the relationship between theory and observation from the Logical Empiricists?
# How do scientific theories explain?
# What are laws of nature?
# How does evidence bear for or against a theory?
# What even makes a theory scientific?
I have scores of other possible modules from across the university to choose from; these here are just what I've narrowed it down to.

Where in the hell are you going to University?
Math and science courses are a freaking requirement here.
Well, I wrote Ancient Philosophy because I just had that ridiculous classics class at uni, so that was what I was most familiar with. That, and I received an A on my final project (the imaginary-yet-plausible conversation between a Greek and a Roman), and I used the Nicomaechean Ethics as a source for my conversation.

I probably would, but that's where the problem is. There are myriad rules to work through in choosing modules, one of which means that out of each numbered pair (except #6) I have to choose one of the two. So I have to take either Ancient Philosophy or Modern Philosophy, and can't just ignore both in favour of taking Sartre Nietzsche and Media Ethics/Philosophy of Sport.

It's America's way of ensuring that all students have a "well-rounded" education.
Sounds a bit like trying to defend everything and thus defending nothing to me, personally. People are talented at one thing, they should learn all that pertains to that and every subject that can help them succeed in that field. The twat is giving me zero's on everything when I should be getting straight 100's, cause she ****ing obsessively compulsively can't handle me writing in blue ink when she likes black. But sometimes they only LEARN it instead of EXPERIENCING it, and when it comes to racial relations, experience is just as valuable, if not more valuable.
I mean, these kids can learn all they want, but they still wouldn't know how to act around a black person or an Arab, and they certainly wouldn't feel any more comfortable.
Except a lot of us learn it WHILE experiencing as a lot of us see a lot of diversity in the city. However, unless you're a moron I think that 'experience' is overrated. Just treat everyone the same.

Except, a lot don't. How many black people ARE there in New England?
You can't learn how to treat a certain ethnic group when you have no experience dealing with them.
Like Dwight Eisenhower said, "Farming looks mighty easy when you're a thousand miles away from a corn field and your pitchfork is a pencil".

What I mean is...
You can talk up how all minorities deserve equal treatment, and how all people are equal, and how we should all be tolerant of one another...but that doesn't mean that you wouldn't stereotype and racially profile, and it doesn't mean you actually will treat minorities equally.
Bartender, your reviews were honest, detailed, and overall excellent. Regardless how miffed I am that you didn't give my song an 11/10, I still appreciate the time that went into your review. :)

I second this. The concept of color-blindness is very often an attitude assumed by white people stricken with white guilt whenever the issue of inequality even comes up: they ignore the implications of our extremely complex racial situation today by providing such an easy, thoughtless response, and the only thing that ends up happening--far from encouraging diversity and equality--is merely a continuation and assistance of white rule in a system that is already, like it or not, agree or not, naturally and inherently skewed in favor of whites. The white people who are colorblind may genuinely feel that they are not racist, but since racism is now more than ever built into the fabric of our society, such an attitude can only perpetuate inequality, not cure it.

No, Nick sits in a neat balance that allows him to safely analyze his acquaintances without drawing fire for being equally deserving of criticism or being accused of having a lack of understanding of the topic to which he is addressing.
Sample of my atrocious writing.
Gatsby has the potential to be a very moving character, but I think all great literature is mostly wasted on high school assignments. The only problem is, how many people are going to think he's my brother as opposed to my son? (No, this isn't necessarily a race thing--an 18 year old holding a baby is going to garner a response like that no matter what race, or so I hope)
But then again, who cares? I'm going to have the brother I always wanted.
That's why I enjoy my school...I can write a paper that is actually about something.

When I have a kid, I'm going to wait a while before the second one. My little sister is one of the most adorable, well-behaved children I have ever come across and I strongly suspect it's because she has two very mature older siblings, i.e., me and my other 14-year-old sister.

I want two kids, spaced 2 or 3 years apart. THat way they grow up together and don't get that annoying single child mentality. I also want them close enough in age that when they are young can entertain each other but when they are older don't find themselves in the same social circles.

When I have a kid, I won't wait that long before having another (a few years, I guess). I mean, I don't want there to be too big an age gap, then I don't think the kids would get along with their siblings all that well.

For physics at the high school, the final takes place at Cedar Point and is cumulative. Physics II writes their own final, while Physics I has to take this bitch of a final that starts right when you get on the bus. Physics II final >>>>>>>> Physucks I final.

When I said between classes I meant class vs. class, like, "The game was played between Univeristy of Texas and the Sooners". I can't believe you guys get to do that, though.
And I don't know why I haven't heard of Cedar Point. I'm just not a big amusement park guy.
Also, Shawn Marion has the ugliest jump shot ever.

In case you're too lazy to look, I am wondering about what the next poll will be. Iai was going to do modern rock, but he sort of defected from R&M. I recall Schyma mentioning him wanting to do something again, and I've heard many people say that they just want a break. 307 said he doesn't mind what happens, and Bart seemed cool with whatever when I asked him about it earlier.

I always procrastinate. Like tonight-I have about an hour of math homework, but I'm telling myself, "Nah, I'll get up at 5:30 and I'll be able to finish it." Shyeah right. Sure, I'll set my alarm, it'll go off, I'll press snooze, it'll go off again, but I'll still get up when I normally do. If I were you, I wouldn't put it off. :thumb:

I agree here.
Back in high school, I tried waking up at 5AM to lift, but I just couldn't force myself to get up, eat a shitty breakfast, try to lift on a shitty breakfast, then shower and go to school. It was too hard for me.
Just do it now, go to bed, and get some sleep after. That way, you won't have to think in the back of your mind that you need to wake up early to finish something.

Yea Jim explained Cedar Point pretty well, our physics classes take a bus down to Ohio and we spend the day at an amusement park, learning physics firsthand! It's really easy, because like he said, the Physics 1 classes have a hugeass packet to do for their final, but I'm in Physics 2 and we have to do like 4 problems, which we make up. Then it's rollercoasters for the rest of the day.
And Yousendit was screwing up, so the videos didn't upload right, but I'll get them later tonight.

Though it's interesting to note that Japanese, with so much extreme culture (the Guinea Pig films, torture-themed gameshows, Nasubi (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84736)) have so relatively little violent crime, and America, with so many safeguards in place to reduce the sex and violence shown in the media to protect the children from their influence, has so much.

Anyway, it's been awhile since I've bought any new CDs. I think, though, that I'm going to get an mp3 player some time soon. This seems like a good time to bring it up...
Two questions:
Anyone have any experience with the Creative Zen Touch 20GB player?
And, how many medium quality songs (like 128 bit) will this player hold?

Also, when it comes to NBA coverage, TNT blows ESPN away. This isn't even close.

I didn't, no. What does she study?

I don't remember explicitly, but Tracy Ullman said on The Daily Show that she's really interested in politics. So political science, maybe?

If it were political philosophy, that would be cool. There'd be a decent chance I've argued with her. I wonder if it's that hot girl in my tutorial..
Anyway, having written an essay that concludes that there is no such thing as self..I'm off to get some sleep.

Her name is Mabel, if that counts for anything.

Not really. Apart from my proctorial group, I don't know the names of any of the people in my classes, except the one I live with (Chris) and the hippy who seems determined to be the epitome of "student" (Tommy).

For shame.
Pshht, I didn't know any of my classmates' names save for my honors class, but that's because there were twenty people in it.
That, and I just didn't care about anyone else. I wasn't at uni to make friends.
Good night, 'Tender.
So, how many of you like to go bowling from time-to-time? I just got back with my dad. He won the 50-50 raffle... half of it went to prostate cancer research (the sports talk radio station was there sponsoring it and will be there until 6PM tomorrow), and the other half went to him. I bowled like crap, with just a high game of 183. The other games I'd rather not mention :-\

Holy wilikers that's a huge file.
Bowling is pretty fun, I guess. I never take it seriously though. ****, sometimes I'll use bumpers for the hell of it. I don't think I've ever bowled over 130. :-\

I'm glad you do, not many people have been very fond of it since a) they're accustomed to the dog avatar and/or b) they don't know where he's from.

In my english class, we started reading To Kill a Mockingbird. So far, it's pretty wicked.
I'm 5 chapters in. :p I like it so far, though.

I liked To Kill a Mockingbird quite a bit. I hate all writings by John Stienbeck more than any other author ever. Maybe that's an exaggeration but I just can't get myself to actually read those books. Every 5 pages I need a break.
Current book - A Clockwork Orange
It is so confusing but a good read once you figure out what's going on. I haven't seen the movie because I wanted to read it first. It's taking me a while to get through this one. What with the made up words and all.

Was To Kill a Mockingbird the one with Boo Radley? If so, that was indeed a good one. Heh, Clockwork Orange...Never read the book, but the movie is about as ****ed up as they come.

For shame.
I know the important ones (the ones I'm in my main proctorial/tutorial groups with, because I meet them twice a week). There are dozens of others though, some that I've only met with three or four times in total, so I don't know them.
