I like the idea of putting the links in the update much better, so people don't have to look for the ****.
Surely it isn't that hard to check the new posts in the thread every now and then is it?

Now that I'm going to be starting work soon, I am not sure I will be able to update like that... but we'll see, as soon as I get my hours in, I'll be ready to form an opinion.
Seems like alot of extra effort. You're already making regular updates, and people should just be able to check the thread themselves. I mean, it's free music.

Are Ali/Bartender around?

I want to make sure that this is the format they want me to follow for the YSI thread (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7697538#post7697538)

Now, my goal is to update every page, if this is the format you want me to follow. However, since I just got a summer job and I do not know how extensive my hours will be, I am not sure I will be able to update that way as regularly as I'd like.
Please give feedback, though, if that's the format you wanted.

"3:15am: people think only of themselves
It sucks the way most people are. They only care about what they can get out of a person and seem to careless about how that makes the other person feel. My so called friend Robbie calls me as soon as im falling to sleep wanting something from me, but when i need somone to talk to and call him he seems to be to busy to talk or his mom is around, so i hung up the phone on him, and havent talked to him since. Ya know i just want somone who actually appreciates me and doesnt take what i do for them for greanted and for some reason i cant find that person. And if i think i do something bad happens and ruins everything. For example i had a big crush on Matt then he started making excuses as to why he didnt want to hang out with me and didnt want anything but a friendship becuz he just got out of a serious relationship then i find out a week ago that he now has a g/f. Then there is Mike, his excuses seem to be becuz of drugs. Then tommy just up and moved without saying bye. The hurtful things people do. They dont look around and see how there actions can hurt someone.

What im looking for in a guy:
I want someone who has unconditional love for me
Wants a family
Has ambition and goals and wants to succeed
Can make me laugh when im down

AS for looks i want someone who takes care of themself and dresses nice. I want someone to motivate me and work out with me so we can both stay healthy. And someone who doesnt eat a lot of meat...

Yes im picky i know but thats me though.

Things that should get a lot of posts/participation that don't:
FAs (about lesser known artists)
FGs
Good band threads like Jake's
My Concert thread
Forum bands
Forced Listenings

Mindless things that get an undue amount of participation:
Games
Flame threads
Contests (not the discussion, just the participation)
This thread
Official threads
Best/Favorite/Opinion threads

Yeah...That pretty much touches on everything wrong here.

With a place of this size not everyone is going to want to participate to a high degree. Alot of people just prefer mindless posting, where they don't have to think/learn and can just express their opinions continually.

Well it takes a bit of deception. You can't just say "I don't like this, can I have my money back?". Something like it was a birthday present that you didn't really want, or you were buying it as an errand for someone, and got the wrong thing accidentallt.

Anyway, I don't think I would do it anyway, you never know when you change your mind about CD's.

Yeah, well usually I'd not think about taking it back either. But it's very different from what I thought it was going to be, and not very good at that, and (mostly) in a momentary blaze of idiocy (possibly connected to the excitement of going to see the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy later) I paid plenty more than I usually ever would for it.

Scarve - Irradiant. A review I'd read lead me to believe it some kind of progressive, atmospheric metal (of very high quality), so that's what I expected. What I got was uninspired, half-arsed (though technically proficient, I suppose) death/thrash with a bit of a futuristic sheen, a la Meshuggah/Mnemic and Darkane.

In response to 'Tender that is somewhat connected, I wish Sputnik reviewers were more encourage to only gove unbiased reviews, or more people reviewed albums they don't like. I also don't appreciate people who give high ratings to albums that suck but no one else would ever do and when they are told the band/album sucks they put up a big stink. I'm talking about pop reviews for the most part and music that people on these forums rarely listen to.

My main reservation about doing a review is the "track-by-track" thing. For some tracks you just don't have much to say.

Sputnik reviews get me mad most of the time because i hate the people who review albums when they don't even like that genre. The one review that i think is the worst out of the ones ive seen is for The Beatles Sgt. Peppers, it onlt got 4 stars or maybe 4.5, I think. While some of their lesser early albums got perfect 5s. The person who reviewed the album didn't even like psychedelic or slow sounding songs.

People should review albums of genres or bands they don't like, or at least albums they don't like. Otherwise the reviews aren't helpful. Look at the new QotSA album's reviews, one is an e-blow job and the other just trashes it. Neither are very good, but I like having two opposing opinions. It gives a better idea what the album is like. People should try to include the pros and cons of each album and when giving cons, really look hard for them.

Let's get back to Sputnik for a minute.

So do my reviews suck or something? Be honest.

Anyways, I was planning on doing two reviews tomorrow. Should I try writing in paragraph form instead of track-by-track? It's just easier for me to write a number of sentences for each track instead of trying to incorporate the entire album into a small number of paragraphs.

Re: Sputnik reviews: I think I'm pretty good at objectively looking at albums as they compare to other albums in a band's catalog, and what's likely to be accessible to certain people as compared to how I view a particular song or band.

But Sputnik is full of crap, I think. My review for Nightwish's Wishmaster has only gotten one comment, a sentence-long bit, and the only review of mine that's gotten any attention (of course) is the one for "Blackwater Park."

What's the point of reviewing lesser-known stuff when the only thing that ever gets read are whatever popular clicks that show up all the time on the top 10 lists on the site, is my question.

Very intensive, minute-by-minute track by tracks is what I tend to do, followed by a summary of the album as a whole.

Trying to sum up the album without specifics is like reviewing a movie without mentioning the plot.

The most frustrating thing for me about Sputnik is that I'll review these albums, and it'll take a good ninety minutes or so. I'll come back a week later, and I'll have one comment that's absolutely plain and substanceless (which is unfortunately representative of Sputnik as a whole, it seems). The only time I get decent comments is when I whore the links in this thread and ask you guys to comment on whether or not you read the review and thought it was good, even if you disagreed with the rating.

I hate it how I spend all this time writing, only to get minimal reviews.

Another issue that will piss me off is if the reviews are copyrighted by Jeremy once they're submitted. If that's the case, then I do not want to be associated with Sputnik and would accordingly want all my reviews removed.

I hate not having my reviews read. I usually whore them. I have a tendency to do albums no one knows though or on;y a very few people on this site do so it's expected. I tried to find an album to review that would get lots of response but I couldn't find any I felt like listening to. In the end it was between a Melt Banana album or the Mare EP. Mare EP it is.

No no no, not any of that, although that is sound reasoning that I didn't think of.

I don't care about exposure or anything. Certainly, they are not newspaper-worthy or magazine-worthy or any of that.

I just don't like the idea that once I submit my reviews, they no longer become mine, so all that work goes right out the window for someone else.

See you later Dancin' Man.

To AntiHero: a lot of people have expressed a lot of displeasure at Sputnik. But Jeremy has probably expended a ton of work on it, and he hasn't been blind to people's suggestions. He's even included avatars and bigger font sizes next to people's posts to make it more forum-like. In many ways, the change of posting style in sputnik is much more inexplicable than anything else.

I mean, look at the way this site looks. Considering the fact that it conserves bandwidth on the forums, I'd be willing to cut Jeremy some slack since he's obviously busted his ***.

The thing is, I was one of the biggest advocates for Sputnik and tried to get more people to visit there, but to learn (recently) that my own work will no longer be considered my own as soon as I hit "Submit," that's just infuriating. Plus, Jeremy being a lazyass and not giving Med and Damrod moderating privileges is leading to an influx of horrible reviews, and the site is going to be swamped very quickly with them if he doesn't do something soon.

Basically i'd ask for every song individual, or in pairs or whatever, and get them all

But its pointless because its not a rule, its just a loophole in the way his thread works (which I can easily point out plenty of mistakes, but for the respect of Antihero, I won't) and he didn't like me just getting around it like that.

There, you answered it. People will either just download them somewhere else.

I mean, making a rule that states only 1 song should be uploaded per album is ridiculous, because in the end, stealing music is stealing music. Why the hell would you want to sugarcoat it? Just upload a whole album, jeez. You're not making it any worse or any better. You're still stealing.

I also don't appreciate people who give high ratings to albums that suck but no one else would ever do and when they are told the band/album sucks they put up a big stink. "Found a way around it", it's a friendly thread to help people out, it's only common sense that such things are also against the rules. There's no need to find a way around the rules due to technicalities. This is not a federal constitution, there are no technicalities. They are guidelines...

Very American/Canadian, and yet still claiming to be from Guildford. I got the impression he hadn't actually read the books beforehand :-/ Some of the lines/scenes he had just didn't seem to work.

Basically, don't go seeing it expecting a dramatisation of the book. The basic concept and characters are there, but the plot has been somewhat torn apart, added to, taken away from, changed, etc. I want to avoid using negative words like "mangled" because the changes aren't necesssarily negative (i.e. it might still be likeable as a film separate from the books), but from the perspective of a fan of the books, it isn't the Guide.

Doesn't it just take a long time, though? And a long time to dry? I dunno.

Speaking of hair, I'm worried about my girlfriend meeting my mom (which might happen this summer)...my mom holds a prejudice against blondes for whatever reason, and my gf is an upbeat blonde from California, so at least superfically I suppose she would do nothing to dispel the stereotype. It'll probably work out fine in the end, though.

I still don't know what to do this summer...I have like, three and a half months that are basically free.

SIGH! Ok, you know what? I'm sorry, sorry, sorry. I'm sorry antihero, and i'm sorry mods. Ok?

No. I still think i'm right. I'm apologising because I know either of you are too stuck up to apologise back and this trivial fight will go on forever, so i'd rather be the man in the argument and end it now rather than having to fight with you two forever.

In regards to the HHG movie: That's kinda how it was with the LOTR movies too. Good movies, but not the books. My friends hated the LOTR movies because they weren't true to the books but I didn't mind so much so hopefully it's the same with HHG.

In regards to respecting rules: Rules are made to be broken, so as long as it's minor infractions I think we can chill out on this.

In regards to me: I got my thing done, so as long as I attend my classes, do my work and take my finals I shouldn't lose my scholarship. I think that's good. However the best part of the day was clearly free cheesecake. I love cheesecake.

ah, but 'tender, the "tru" fans will claim that the book is a 'mangling' of the original radio play.

Yeah, but the books had far more in common with the radio play (and the TV series more in common with the books) than the film has with any of them.

I could never read the LOTR books when I tried to (the writing style bored me too much, basically), so I didn't really mind how far off they were. I think it's a different situation though; the LOTR films followed the story of the books, they just left out bits - because they were far too big to ever be translated to less than about half a dozen films of three hours each - and changed some smaller bits (i.e. the hobbits get their swords just given to them by Aragorn, rather than the whole extra bit that results in them getting swords), for the same reason. The Guide movie however doesn't just miss bits out for the sake of convenience, it changes the storyline of the books fundamentally.

Well...the first book was rather boring, but the second and third were great reads. It took awhile to get interesting for sure. Some of the stuff like elves fighting at Helm's Deep was also completely added...and the epicness of that battle, but yeah...if it's more fundamentally changed than that it could be bad.

Saying the 1st book is boring is a common misconception. The first 100 something pages are rough, but Tolkien is just trying ot make a transition from The Hobbit to LOTR. He originally didn't plan on making a sequel/follow-up to the Hobbit, so transitioning is tough to do. He actually changed parts of the Hobbit to make it transition better into LOTR so there are 2 versions of the hobbit lout there.

No no...it's an opinion. I read the books, I didn't misconceive my opinion. I thought it was boring.

I'm sorry but I have something to get off my chest:

Every so often I hear people say things like, "Dude, I'm moving to Europe after I graduate, this country's in such bad shape" and every time I here someone say it I want to punch them.

It's representive of one of this country's major problems: People would rather run away from their problems and/or seek an easy solution than confront them head-on. People bitch and moan about how lousy things are but they never work to improve them, they just find a way to ignore them.

America is far from perfect--hell, right now it's very flawed--but it's never going to get better if people don't work to make it better.

But it is a common misconception.

You can't say that thinking something being boring is a misconception. It's just opinion. Something being boring or not has to be someone's opinion.

Illmatic - good work on making that post without implying that Europe sucks :)

My beef isn't with Europe, I like Europe. And I have no problems with an American making a concious decision about moving to Europe. It's when people flee there (or Canada, for that matter) in a last-ditch attempt to flee working to improve America that I get irritated.
