I've never really cared for the Clippers, because they were always the second-rate team in LA; they were like the Mets to me.

I've always been a Lakers fan though.

And don't even start the sports **** again.
Why not?

I dislike reading through so many uneventful posts to see the good ones that you all make. It's just the fact we have an off-topic thread makes the impulse to just say a few words to people that much harder.

If we all wrote big paragraphs, which I know which we are capable of doing, it would be fine, but neither I nor anyone else I think has the patience and time to do so... so it really is something that could be replaced with mxrockandmetal. And I am using that particular IM as an example. We can make another chat room if you guys would prefer.

Hell, I could write in big paragraphs all day. I love posting like that. It's just that the biggest problem that the thread suffers from, ironically enough, is a strange resistance to the idea of actually HAVING A DISCUSSION. It pisses me off that when Med57 comes in and starts talking about the probles he's got with the new pope, an almost instantaneous response is something along the lines of "I don't mind all that much, but let's save it for the Politics Forum."

And also, seeing some users that will remain unnamed as Riva said, that constantly push the postcount of this up and their own personal postcount by only staying in this thread and never posting anywhere else, is really annoying and takes the fun out of it. If the thread dies, people don't post in any other threads, they just try to revive this one with repeated spam bumps of "Dead thread?" "Anyone still here?"

I'm no angel, but I also don't appreciate the fact that on the rare occaisions where I've tried to remind some people about the spamming problem, I get called a "tr00 thread nurse" and am consequently set up for smart-*** ridicule. I don't care for it and if that's all that the thread is good for, then I honestly will regret that something that was once fun is gone, but will at the same time not care so much.

I have a feeling that a lot of users that regularly use this thread will fade away if it gets closed, and that's pretty sad.

No one is going to delete the Pit. And I don't care what goes on in there, since it isn't a music forum. However, even those examples you mentioned still fall under my disagreement. They shouldn't be just chat rooms, but they do serve a purpose other than free-form chat. This thread has no other purpose. The difference between here and the Pit is that this forum is a music forum. I'm not complaining about the way people post their own thoughts in this thread, I'm complaining that it is being posted in the wrong way, and that since people are unwilling to change posting habits, with the exception of Lucas ;), that something needs to be done.

Well, I agree 75%, and the other 25% that doesn't is completely due to the fact that I see all the music threads, which is your/our goal to preserve, becoming chat rooms, worse than they already are.

I won't post spam in this thread when there's something other than spam to respond to, is basically what I was saying. :) It doesn't seem to be the thread's natural inclination to do that, though. But you want a discussion, I'll write essays. But I'm not going to waste my time if the thread's attention span is too short to read them.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jason. :) I'm really not all that annoyed, just sad and mildly pissed off that this is the direction it's taken.

I think a big problem is that some people will drop out of discussions they have no interest in, while others will change the topic if they're not interested in it. That really is just posting for posting's sake guys. I'm probably guilty of it too, it's a hard habit to break, but if you don't have something to add to the current discussion, don't change the discussion, browse some other threads and then come back. If I don't have something to post now, I don't. It's the main reason I'm not at the top of this thread post wise like I was in the other one. There are a lot of people who post in this thread, and a lot of them only pop in for some discussions but not others, while others try to dominate every discussion, and I think that could end. This community thread is also different from, say, the punk community thread, which I think is a much better one. Though not all are immune as pop punk's is as bad as this one imo. I prefer it when we have something to discuss I can participate in, but more often than not when we do it gets derailed and I end up wandering off elsewhere. We also need to cut down on the greeting stuff. It's better to read where the chat's at and jump in than to derail the current topic. If the chat is dead it's better to say "Hey guys, today was a great day, I discovered ____ band and they're awesome" or "I just learned how to play ____ lick" but don't just greet, give it a direction.

Well, I can provide this as an example to back up Lucas' post. I posted a rather large argument on the philosphy of space, etc in this thread, and I recieved three direct replies. Two said something along the lines of "Too long, my head hurts", and one was just a cop out. All three people who wrote these replies were e-friends of mine, so I am not picking on people I hate. What I hated was that people ignored that post in favour of a post of some inconsequential nature, but consisted of maybe 5 words. I think it was someone saying "sup thread, I've been at school".

Chris, I know what you mean, and I am happy to work on a solution to your issue. However, I think that 90% of me wants to see this thread change or be closed.

The other 10% is based completely on your reservations. Also, you guys are breaking my heart. :(

I called you that because you revived the thread.

I understand, but it was presented in a way (with the word "tr00" indicating a thought that I was being elitist) that set me up for stupid defensive remarks of "This is the community thread, we'll talk about whatever we want," from other users, which I did not appreciate because made an effort to change the course of the thread seem like an excercise in futility. This is what annoyed me more than the remark itself, which at the time I understood to be pretty much light-hearted.

I'll follow Riva and say that I too like everybody on here and that's the truth. I love coming into the community thread and touching base with everyone, since you all have my respect and I'd like to think that I even have yours, from a few of you. But at the same time the unnamed few could be much better users than they're acting. It's just sad that there's so much intelligence that only seems to be put to use in pointing out grammar mistakes in the posts of newer users, and never to talking about anything substantial, at least within the thread.

I'm calling you on that one. I like you a lot, Ray, and you're a real intelligent guy, but the quarrel between you and AH a few pages back is no cause for accusing Jom and especially madey, of all people, of being responsible for the bulk of the spam. You are constantly in here and constantly spamming in various ways.

I didn't want to get into this name-calling act. I am merely coming to the defense of two people who aren't here to defend themselves. I would appreciate some maturity here and say let's not turn this into a finger-pointing fest.

I will add, however, that AH, for whatever faults he may have in this thread, at leasts posts in other threads of far greater number than you do. This was not always the case with you, but it has become that way, it seems to me.

Well, I spam a lot too, but I mostly follow their example. I'm far from perfect. I often just follow the flow of the thread, so when AH and madey get their respective things going, then I just get caught up in it too.

I often fall victim to the American mindset of "Eh, I can't change anything", so when I see spamming in this thread, I take part in it instead of trying to change the subject. Because I see myself as being a poster of little importance on MX, so I often convince myself that even if I try to change the subject people will ignore it in lieu of a discussion started by a poster of greater importance (ie, an AH or a zepfan).

I would like to post in other threads here, but a few of them don't pique my interests, and the others are too far along for my posts to contain anything of consequence. This is also true in Politics and World News, which is irritating because I would like to post in there, but the threads I do want to post in are so big that it is too late for me to post anything that contains a fresh viewpoint.

EDIT: It is more than just a "finger-pointing-fest", anyhow. When me and Vince were having a debate/discussion as to whether man is just too lazy or too selfish or whatever, AH kicked up quite a fuss and threatened to not post in the [old] thread anymore.

You're not of little importance in this thread. You're a regular here. You get respect just for showing your face and not stepping on too many toes, and on top of that I know for a fact that you have great things to talk about. Hell, I've still got that post you made on the pressures young black Americans feel to "act black" saved on my desktop. I certainly consider you a friend, a position with a lot of importance.

And the only thing that truly contributes to the ideas that discussion topics will be ignored is because they always are, which feeds the tendency to not start any, which makes them more ignored, etc.. Well, guys, suck it up and start caring, or spam in the Pit. If you have nothing to talk about, quit talking about nothing.

That's all for tonight. I'll see you folks tomorrow. :)

EDIT: AH has also matured considerably about that. He's no stranger to being yelled at for hindering a discussion with complaints, and he is intelligent and kind enough to understand that to gain the respect of the users he wants it from, he should act a bit more intelligently. And in my experience of past weeks, he more than has.

It's impossible to place the blame for spam on any users individually. I think instead of finger pointing we should work on self-control, it's much more useful and effective. Spam happens, but once someone points it out, it needs to stop. That doesn't always happen. Basically if we can't moderate ourselves I'm all for a spam=ban policy in here. I also think we'd need to enforce it where ban=no new account too. But this problem can be solved without mod intervention.

I wouldn't go that far. It's just a bad habit. No one's the poster child of everything wrong with the thread. Everybody just needs a little more awareness and use of their brains, and less autopilot posting in this one single thread.

Well, really, how hard is it to talk about something worthwhile if we make a goal of it. You come into the thread, if nothing decent is being talked about, spark something up. "Hey guys, what are your thoughts of the Pledge of Allegance being taken out of schools? I think..." . And if you are one to reply to such an inquery, reply with a good answer and not a "I don't want to read all that" or "I think it sucks". And with enough of us doing this, it will hinder those who will try to change the subject or spam. Just a thought.

That's a rather large generalization. I feel a lot of older regs have been posting here less and regulating themselves more, I think it's some of the newer people who are still sliding into this habit for the most part.

I think that instead of allowing yourself to slide in, you just need to remind yourself and everyone else when it is becoming spammy. I know sometimes we're blind to it, but usually someone sees it and just needs to say so.

Anyways, I'm beat. Night.

Heh, I was going to point out the irony too...And really, no matter what we're talking about, this kind of conversation is much more enjoyable. My interest in the thread tonight has obviously been a hell of a lot higher than normal because there's something that's actually worth reading and replying too, rather than the normal hellos and goodbyes. I love discussion and debating and also things such as random YSI's to hopefully spark some discussion on the song or band...

Lately I have noticed people have just pretty much ignored the uploads that people do...make some grounds for discussion to go along with them, don't ignore them.

I am all for less spam and more quality discussion. The lack of substance in this thread have driven me away from this thread over the past few month, and I wish it would return to the glory days.

Also a perfect example of discussion + community feel is the Death Heads Thread. Every one knows each other, some time there is talk about their personal lives and events and such, but there is still alot of discussion on the music and alot of helping members in that thread. But there is no "omg hi2u" posts every page...

Not every thing in this thread has to be an essay on every post, still can have the community feel of "what's up guys" type of posts and such, but if that's all you are going to post, don't post at all. If you have something to add, then add it in with your topic at hand. You don't have to lose the whole community feel of the thread and such, just keep it a bit more intelligent instead of "omg hi2u lolz".

Just think before you post and try and spark some conversation instead of dull it even more.

The problem is, AH seems to be opposed to it :-\ and he and madey probably around for 90% of the thread's spam.

Hah! How the hell am I supposed to respond to a claim like that?

I'm not even going to bother to defend my actions in either community thread, and I'm certainly not going to accept that Madey and I account to 90% of the spam in this thread. I'm not going to turn this back into a he-said/she said, but when the person accusing me of such things has more than 100 posts than me ITT, I sincerely doubt that all those posts are constructive, lengthy, etc.

Now, there is a reason why I like coming here. One of the reasons is because I genuinely care about how [most] everyone is doing. That's part of "living" in such a community, so that's fine.

That said, I do agree with Riva, and I've agreed about this since before this new thread came to fruition. My frustrations certainly took centerstage in the old thread numerous times. The last post that Ray cited, about me leaving the thread, was not on account of that political discussion. Yeah, I was infuriated that I made an extremely long post in reply and it got ignored, but I was talking to Jason about the deteriorating state of the thread to begin with (I'll show you the log, if you are going to be all Sherlock Holmes on me), so really, citing that as evidence against me is just, well, faulty. What was the general topic I discussed in those posts? Spam. The right people got the message I was trying to convey, but then there's others who misinterpret what I say to use it as support for an unfounded argument to begin with. Personally, why one would dig through the old thread to look for posts like that, only to see that they don't help strengthen their point, is well beyond me. Let's dedicate the next few pages of spam to find out.

Yeah, I argue with people. I'm one of the most difficult people you guys would ever meet in real life, just because that's how I roll. By saying that I'm "immature" or whatever poorly-used adjective was thrown at me to describe my actions in the threads... isn't it obvious as to why I act like I do on MX? It gets a rise out of people, and they'll stop at nothing to see me falter in some way. Well, it doesn't happen.

Anyone who speaks to me over AIM/MSN knows that I do not write things even remotely close to what I do in the argument stages of this thread. There's even a user who asks me for their permission to talk, and that's not right, man. If I'm online and active, you have the right to assume that I'm open to talking to you. I just don't see why someone feels they have to do that. Is it because I'm at university? Nah, more than half of the regulars ITT have graduated from high school or are in their senior year of high school. The one exception that springs to mind that I respect is Efilnikufesin (not the sadist kid, etc.), but I seriously don't see him as a junior high kid, I see him as being sixteen or seventeen years old.

So really, all this arguing with me is petty considering who brought me into this in the first place and because of the context that it's in. If you're going to sift through old posts waiting for me to misstep somewhere, you are sorely, sorely mistaken.

I'm done.

That might be a weird thing to say to someone I know only through the internet, but I consider you a good friend, man. In a nutshell, there was an argument in the old thread where everyone involved in the dispute tried to sound like they were better than everyone else.

/thought you were a senior... well, you're soon to be one, anyway

EDIT: I have to prepare to teach the class in a few hours, so I'm going to head out.

Enjoy the day.
I was involved :(. If by involved you mean apologising for something I said to Cain a while back and discussing it with Jason on MSN

I'm done.

Don't get me wrong here. I'm not trying to place all the blame on you and absolve myself completely. You should be flattered, really, I'm painting you as the "leader", the architect.

Because I'm not sure why, but I will often just follow the crowd. I will sometimes just follow the example of someone else. Why? God knows why. I should be more self-confident, but I'm not. I'm a wreck, it's like I have two different sides of me pulling me apart at the seams here, and I can't commit to either one so I generally just don't action about it and just do what everyone else is doing. Do I lke it? Of course not, but sometimes that's just what happens.

Maybe I'm just manic-depressive.

It's been a few months but I really need a smoke right now.

Hello everyone. I'll attempt to make this post not spam-o-rific.. So how are all of you? I myself am doing well. Hello, everyone.

I'll address Eitri first: congratulations on those pieces coming together. A significant other must be a nice thing after being single for a number of months, any improvement in school deserves a necessary congratulations, and any increase in bassplaying skill also deserves a congratulatory message.

Hello to everyone else.

Congrats on 5,000, ICB.

So I prepared my lecture for the class today, went downtown, and found out that I was to go first. Kind of intimidating, but it was alright.

I printed out lecture notes for people (remember the search for that one comic? That's what I needed it for... supplemental material to go with the lesson), handed it out, and finished right at ten minutes on the dot. That meant I didn't get penalized (), and I got positive feedback. I got a 4.0 on it. Yessss.

I also got my lesson plan back. Another 4.0. Yessss.

Needless to say, I was relieved that that is over with. Now, it's just time to prepare my diversity presentation for tomorrow morning, write up a review for classics, and then start preparing for the writing finals for history and classics. The classics paper is going to me a bitch because I need to do incredibly well on it in order to 3.0 the class, which is what I need in order to be exempted from a whole bunch of general education classes.

I also am going to write another Sputnik review tonight, even though one person commented on my last one :(

Just login with your same username and password as you would do on MX.

Jeremy has been working hard in implementing it with the MX community, but there is an obvious lacking of any community spirit there. A lot of members are [successfully] boycotting it, and it has taken a lot of bumps and bruises in its BETA stage. Jeremy recently modded Med and Damrod as Sputnik-only mods, and for good reason, because there has been an influx of absolutely horrible reviews.

On a completely random side note, my school hired a rabbi recently as a replacement for one of our RS teachers who's on maternity leave. Has anyone else noticed that kids today just don't care?

It's kind of disheartening...laziness, combined with some healthy cynicism, have bred a "I dunno, who cares?" kind of attitude around our generation and younger generation. No one keeps up with the news or with world issues today, no one seems to be informed enough to have a healthy political viewpoint. One of my cousins is 19 years old and she doesn't even know who Dick Cheney is. It's really upsetting that one day these people will be running the country, and it's another reason why I want to be in politics.

Wow, that sucks. Jeremy needs to get on that. I am not sure as to what he has to do to get it to work, but it needs to get done soon.

And it's sadly true about how you can't make up things like that. One of my high school teachers a couple years ago (who was ironically my football coach) would always tell these stories, and he'd always end it with, "True story, I can't make this stuff up, I'm not that smart."

If magicbus was here, he'd know exactly who I'm referring to (if he had this particular teacher, I mean).

I have to agree with Bartender that some intervention needs to take place. Either that, or chop off his curls.

It's really upsetting that one day these people will be running the country, and it's another reason why I want to be in politics.

Well, since kids these days were brought up in a "right here, right now" world of technology and things, they want instant gratification, and they tend to get it, which directly affects laziness and apathy towards the world.

Change is a gradual process, and they don't understand that.

Kids are using tools like the Internet and computers for lazy things: gaming, browsing, Ebaying, etc. because that gives them instant gratification. Psychologically, they don't have an ego, because the id is drastically overpowering the superego. I'm not saying those things are bad, but technology is improving so rapidly that instant gratification seems to be the ultimate end of all things to come.

It's like that Offspring song... Americana, I think it's called. He says something about how his generation doesn't like to wait, which is essentially very true.

A lot of people don't care about world events, I find, because they just assume that the people we put in power will protect us. Well, that's what they're paid to do, we elect public officials to put in office to make the decisions for us, and when all of a sudden something needs our attention, a lot of people will turn away and, I guess, become lazy.

I also think that there is a time when you need to be introduced to politics so that one has a better understanding of the matter. I don't think you can throw someone in blindly into politics and expect them to know all the intricacies that are involved.

God, I get confused on this all time. Please clarify id, ego, and superego....I've heard them a million times but I never remember.

I hear what you're saying. America doesn't want to think for itself. Maybe this dates back to McCarthyism? I'm not sure.

But I think there is cynicism involved. It's not even informed cynicism, but I think that the clowns that have been put into office--Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, the Bushes, even Clinton to an extent, have turned kids off. They throw their hands up and say "Everything's hopeless, I don't want to be part of this". They use it as an excuse for their laziness, I think.

Eh, I can't explain myself well, it's just general malaise towards the indifference of our generation.

God, I get confused on this all time. Please clarify id, ego, and superego....I've heard them a million times but I never remember.

Freud said that the id was the first part of the psyche to develop, and basically is the one that dominates little babies - the id wants instant gratification. It wants it's hunger, thirst, all it's drives and desires, etc, satisfied the instant it feels them.

The superego, vaguely, is the highly moral part. The part that always 'wants' to do the right thing.

The ego is like the referee between the two. It's like the one that has knowledge of how society works - it knows that everything the id wants can't be acquired or done straight away, and it knows the same of what the superego wants, so it basically sits in the middle and tries to keep the peace, allowing you to operate "normally" through life.

And when one part (usually the ego) isn't strong enough, or there's a particularly strong clash between two of them, you get complexes and neuroses and things.

Things are starting to get really messed up with this at school now. The teachers are threatening to send us to the office if we even try to talk about this, and they are confiscating all the newspapers in the school(It has the teacher's mugshot in it).
They can't do anything, the schools have freedom of the press in most states, you could sue the school for doing that. You also have freedom of speech as long as you aren't slandering the teacher. If you get in trouble for it sue them, they can't restrict your right to free speech.

That is incorrect.

Even though this is probably not the case, schools have the right to seize newspapers, especially if they are school-run newspapers, since funding is going into supporting the class.

Ok the way it works, from several past Supreme Court cases, is that students have no rights when they get into school.

so how's everyone doing? today's my 2 yr anniversary with my gf so i'm having a good day, cept i'm still a little sick.

It is a local paper.

The faculty is really being retarded about this, ignoring the problem isnt gonna make it go away, and it pisses me the hell off that they think we cant "handle" this.

To zep: Yeah, me and my brother were talking about that earlier.

In situations that are less serious than yours at our school, the facalty still does that. They try to ignore the problem the best they can and they keep us in the dark because supposedly we can't handle anything.

On a completely random side note, my school hired a rabbi recently as a replacement for one of our RS teachers who's on maternity leave. He's currently proceeding to tell the GCSE group of students at my school that "Muslims can never be trusted", "homosexuality is evil", and when anyone tries to argue with him, he responds that he's a man of God. I swear you can't make this stuff up sometimes... :upset:
What denomination of Judaism does he practice?

Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, ect.

Good day to all of you. Well, it has happened. The big moment has arrived. I have decided to start saving, because tentatively starting on the 2 January 2006, for around 2-3 weeks, I, along with my beautiful girl friend Eleese, will be going to England! Yes, all you UK R&Mers - I can finally meet you face to face!

We have no set schedule yet, this is not part of a tour, we are simply flying to Heathrow Airport in London, making our own way around the countryside for a few weeks, and then flying back to Sydney, then back up to Cairns. As such, there is limitless possibilties to see all of you guys. And if Jelle wants to make a channel trip, he can.

So, since we are going to try to figure out a plan of travel in the next few months, anyone who wants to meet up can email @ HeavyRiva@gmail.com me there approx location, etc, and any tips for cheap accomodation in their area, best places to eat, the works.

Well, cannot wait. Gonna start saving as of today, so bye bye CD buys for a while. :)

Actually, I will pretty much be circumnavigating the globe, from the southern hemisphere to the other side of the world, in the northern hemisphere. Right now the plane fares are $1540 each, so I wonder what it will be like in 8 months time?

Well, I wanted to add my .02, since everyone else did.

When people were talking about the problems with this thread, they referred to the massive amounts of posts that this thread already accumulated, and when you look at the stats, I am the person who has posted the most in this thread. This led me to take a lot of what you all said personally. I agree with what was said, but even though I have the most posts in this thread, I don't see myself as a "spammer". One of your complaints was that people should be writing paragraphs to help cut down on spam, but is that really going to be of any help? This may lead to people writing drawn out posts when they could just as easily get their idea across in a few sentences.

I don't really feel that welcome in this thread, but I may pop in from time to time when I have something to add.

There used to be like 10 regulars in this thread and now there are about 30. I don't think anyone in particular is to blame, a lot of people do it. You're just on longer than other people are. I've read through the rules, but there seem to be a lot of future bureaucrats on MX. I fear they'll find some technicality. Also, there is the problem of finding something worthwhile to make a thread out of.

I would be down for a FG on rap/hip-hop. Only question is how well it will be recieved on a metalhead-dominated forum.

Eh, most of the time we're down with a thread if it isn't overdone and inspires good discussion. Sometimes a thread will get closed and it won't be your fault either. I'd suggest trying rather than assuming it won't work.

Man, I'm not going to tell you guys to do it all night because there's no point if you don't have the motivation, but I can say this, putting some effort in is essential to anything you want to get something out of. All it takes to help the board is to spend 30 mins writing up a good thread instead of posting in here, it isn't too hard. Just address one of the problems you see here. If you think we're not covering enough, bring up something new. Unless it's an absolutely moronic thread I'd bet you won't get banned even if it is against the rules.
