Any fans of The Stone Roses in here? I just finished listening to their self-titled album for the first time, and first impressions aren't all that good. A couple of good songs (but really, really good songs - three if you're listening to the reissue) and then many boring ones. Why is this album considered a classic?

Yeah, I know Melting Point isn't one of their edgier songs..I know what I mean though, even if you don't :)
I like Melting Point mostly for the lyrics, I think, and the bit around 1:00, when the vocalist goes "parody of an angel, miles above the sea, I hear the voice of reason, SCREAMING UP TO ME". His voice just jumps up, in volume, intensity, everything. It's awesome.
I wasn't asked, but here is my quarell with Thrice, the only kid I know who likes them is a diehard fan, and also the biggest douche in the universe, he seriously is the most egomaniacal piece of **** ever.
How is that Thrice's fault? :-/
That's one of the great unanswered questions of indie music. I've never liked that album at all, and I have no idea why it gets hyped as much as it undoubtedly is. Ian Brown never could sing, and I can live with that, but there's just so much better music of that sort out there. I agree that the album has its moments, but it's not even close to being indispensable.
I think my problem with it (at the moment, anyway) is that it seems to be trying too much to make them 'proper' songs. The two tracks I like the most (I Am the Resurrection and Fool's Gold - I like a couple of others but those two just stand head and shoulders over the rest) seem to be the two most jam-like songs on the record. I get the feeling that if they'd released an album of just them playing what they felt like, with only a very loose structure tying it all together, I would have loved it.

I actually love Thrice for their lyrics in general, though I prefer most of the stuff off Identity Crisis for the most part lyrically above the other albums, as far as meaningful to me. I think one of the strengths in general with the band is their dynamics control, so I know what you mean :)

EDIT: OMG THUNDER !
So, my University lab went well. We got to dissect sharks, which is always fun. Except when your shark has just had a recent meal, and (besides pulling out the half eaten stuff from the stomach, which is hilarious) cutting it open cause all the excrement to come out of the rectum. It seriously flowed out for about 5 minutes, at least 600mL of the stuff. I can stand the smell of blood, bile and any other bodily fluid, but **** just makes me gag.
Once the blood flowed out, after I cut the ventral artery, it was a lot better, since the blood kind of mixed with the excrement, and masked the smell. Actually, the lab was really enjoyable. I got to cut out the shark's heart, and I then sacrificed it to Ethanol, the God of Preservation.
I also examined various mammalian digestive tracts, include a sheep's one, which was incredibly interesting, and also about the size of my head. Seriously, the four stomachs on this sheep ranged from fist sized to head sized, and all exuded a kind of visible smell. Ali is the world's bravest man for eating that stuff. Seriously.
Here (http://photobucket.com/albums/v376/JasonTheSteve/?action=view¤t=SharkDissection.jpg) is my lab book after I sketched the shark. I could only be bothered scanning one page.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to waste your time, but I about pissed myself laughing when I heard this. Just read the story and listen to the song.
Except for the kid on screaming vocals, it was pretty much bland as anything music. Even the kid's screaming was just what any young kid does. The lyrics were inspired though... Die Die Die Tree Tree Tree!

Holy crap, Renaissance just confessed that him and SubtleDagger are the same person. This is some funny stuff.
"The most bewildering gimmick in the history of MX..."
If it's true, yeah, a gimmick account that got modded is pretty nuts.
I remain suspicious...but DBJ said he was gonna merge the accounts. That would make Renaissance have like 36,000 posts.

Like I said it wasn't that difficult. We act almost exactly the same, as far as flaming goes, though I tend to spam more on my original account. Aside from that it was just managing my time with both, sometimes being on at the same time.

Anyway, any chance any of you could help me find more of the kind of songs I'm enjoying at the moment? They're an odd kind of song to have a preference for - no particular genre, no particular length or anything like that. They all share a way of (mostly) guitar and bass playing that I'm really liking at the moment, but I've no idea what to call it, as I don't think it's a specific style or anything, just playing little catchy meandering bits of riffs/solos..gah. It's impossible to really say without just providing examples, which I will.
Here; the guitar throughout (but especially at the start) of Stiff Little Fingers - Johnny Was (http://s12.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3O3WA2UMTD44W0E5T3F0MKAPM8); the wah(?)-influenced guitar that begins after the piano intro on North - Through Fire (http://s12.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1KO1CBFJ7R3YV16VMDUPJAJBPL); most of the instrumental outro of The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection (http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=33SX443G6BAPP2PVUDN0SB6DQW); the intro bass and then all the guitar that follows on North - Untitled (http://s12.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3EQH6ILXEJGO516FE7K5RI8LOM); finally, more or less all the bass and guitar work throughout The Stone Roses - Fool's Gold (http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=22DYPH430Z0G93TIVBNOGNITIH). Fool's Gold less so than all the others though, I think.
My hopes aren't high for actually getting answers to this :(
 There's no way Jared and Burt can possibly be the same person. 35,000 posts in 18 months here would be beyond horrible. I would offer to design your blog layout Jom, but I suck at anything involving HTML and other forms of Internet design.
Why is it so hard to believe? Zepfan's made it to 11,000 in less than eight months, not counting the six weeks or so that he's been on various vacations (so it's more like seven months.) Besides, I remember seeing Renaissance early when he had three hundred posts, or so, but then he got a merger and it blew up his postcount by like 10,000 posts. So his join date might not indicate how long Renaissance was actually a member of the forums.
It's possible I misread, though, and maybe his join date transferred to his account when the merge happened. But if I'm right, that would make it more like 25,000 posts in 18 months, which I can easily believe is possible to be done. And after talking to Subtledagger online, I believe it. He told me the meaning of Jared's Renaissance screenname "x Roisin Dubh x" in short enough time after me asking (so that I could be sure that "Burt" and Jared weren't Iming back and forth) and so I'm pretty positive that it's true.
The only thing that keeps me suspicious is that when I appeared and asked "What is the significance of your other screenname" "SubtleDagger" didn't seem to be clear on what I meant. That might have been the point where Burt IMed Jared. But I don't see why this would be the case.
Keep in mind that the joke would be way less funny if this was a prank rather than SubtleDagger being a gimmicked account. The SubtleDagger as-fake-person joke is way funnier.
I'm also really gullible. But I think I believe it.

I was just wondering: what does everyone in here think of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air? I love that show.
Good luck on your presentation, AH.
I think I'm nearing 6,000 too.
EDIT: Wait, I'm not even at 5,800. Bah.

Ha, you suck.
I'm inching closer to 5,000. The drama continues.
By the way, the Celt's are going all the way...until they crash and burn in the second round of the playoffs.

You all post too much.
:)
My hopes aren't high for actually getting answers to this :(
I'd ask in Other maybe, it seems more of a Funk/Blues Rock hybrid, though I didn't much like it :) I'd say it sounds like a Jazzier/Bluesier RHCP based on my limited knowledge of the genre.

Yeah right. Bring on the Pistons in round 2, I say. We can take 'em.

Hell, anyone'll be able to take on the Pistons this year anyway.
Except for, say, Cleveland.

The Pistons just seem to be lacking something this year. And I don't see Phoenix going too far either, given their lack of playoff experience (as a unit. I said "unit".).

The Pistons run hot and cold, but right now they're red-hot, and they have the same starting 5 as last year, and they seem to think no one respects them (see: New England Patriots, The), and the refs let them get away with everything.

Yeah...I just don't like looking at the Western Confrence bracket. Too many teams that I hate  I'm proud of Memphis and Denver, though. Defenitely showing that last year wasn't a fluke. Denver's got a pretty solid line-up and a great coach, they should fare well this year.

George Karl's teams always tend to flame out in the playoffs, though. He had all those great Sonics teams in the 90's and only one made the Finals. The Spurs are going to beat the Nuggets in five games, I think.

I'll give 'em six.
And Memphis will get one win in and they're done.

I think you're underestimating the Grizzlies. They're deep, they're well-coached, and they're a terrific defensive basketball team. They play the same pace as the Spurs, which really gives the Suns problems. I think Memphis can push that series to the full 7.

I really don't think the Nuggets hot streak is going to help them going into the playoffs either. Some people say it provides momentum, I just say they are going to fizzle out.
Does anyone think the Heat can beat the Pistons (provided they make it far enough to play each other)?

By "them" I mean "the Detroit Pistons". Because of their reputation as a "defensive" team, they get away with quite a bit.

Oy...that almost sucked...
So I give my design project presentation to the TA, but I didn't print out hardcopies of the designs for him to sign, but I've passed, so I just need to go print them out. While I'm printing them out, another student shows up and start doing his, that was expected, so I wait until the TA asks for my printouts, and I give them to him, but it turns out the student who is currently presenting has almost the exact same design as me. So the TA eyes us and seems to believe it likely we cheated. Luckily he decided we probably didn't :-/

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it. He has a whole bunch of guidelines that I have to follow (time limit, content standards, other BS), so hopefully I'll get full credit...
... the sad thing is that everyone else's teachings have been pathetic at best. Everyone wants to do "Fifth Grade Language Arts: How to Write an Intro Paragraph." It's all the same... at least I'll be unique, since I go first for my set tomorrow.
I haven't practiced or timed myself, but I don't have AM classes tomorrow fortunately, so I might as well test it out then.
