"The Wildhearts were truly England's last great rock 'n' roll band..." Kerrang! magazine
"The Wildhearts were the kind of band that the British rock press has wet dreams about: creatively brilliant, completely out-of-control, and utterly doomed from day one. Led by charismatic lunatic..." VH1
"Wildhearts mastermind Ginger knows the value of a bad reputation. And in the eleven years since they bounded into the public ear with their seminal debut "Earth Versus The Wildhearts" they've re-written the book on mischief. Magazine offices wrecked…drugs taken…fights fought…vehicles driven into swimming pools. You name it, The Wildhearts have had their greasy little paws all over it, then got bored with it..." contactmusic.com
This band is probably the most influetial British band of the 90s. This is one of those bands who knew what rock 'n' roll was all about and, even though Ginger's excesses got in the way of success, wrote brilliant songs. I have only been into the band for about a week but I am already hooked and absorbed into the band. This is a band I would highly recommend to ANYBODY.
In August of 1989 David Walsh (AKA.Ginger) created a band called The Wild Hearts. It's original line-up was Snake (vocals), Ginger (guitar), CJ (guitar), Julien Dean (Bass), Andrew 'Stid' Stidolph (drums) And so began of one of the most influential British bands of the 90s. Not soon after the creation of the band they created a demo which was heard by Ric Browde who signed them up to Atco Label. Stid is replaced by Pat Walkers and Ric Browde produces The Wild heart's demos. Snake is replaced Dunken F. Mullet and The Wild Hearts play a low-key support slot at the George Robey in Finsbury Park, London. The gig is billed as a 'Sleaze All Dayer'. In March 1991 Ginger, CJ, Joolz and Pat play Nottingham Rock City as a four-piece, Snake having left the band the previous day. Eventually, after numerous auditions fail to turn up a new vocalist, Ginger takes on lead vocal duties permanently. The Wild Hearts went into the studio in December 1991 and recorded their first EP. The Wild hearts then changed there name to The Wildhearts. The Wildhearts then toured and recorded EPs until they released there debut album Earth Vs. The Wildhearts on the 31st August 1993. This album was a raving success and it was all seemed to be going brilliantly for The Wildhearts until July 1994 when CJ was sacked for unknown reasons. The Wildhearts then hirer Devin Townsend to replace CJ. This is the main jist of the creation of The Wildhearts. I could go into it with far more detail and I could carry on the story but it would take me ages :).

If you like the sound of the band from this thread and the mp3s then I highly recommend you go out and buy all The Wildhearts albums starting with The Wildhearts Strike Back. A very good introduction to the band which is a live album with alot of there more famous tracks on. So why are you just sitting there? Get off your *** to the shops and get yourself some Wildhearts! So basically discuss anything in this thread. What you think of The Wildhearts, your favourite albums/song, if you have never heard the Wildhearts before do you like the yousendits and are you going to go out and get some more of there stuff? Also, who else is excited about the re-release of Black Leather mojo?

Well it's a relatively new album, and a live album, so I wouldn't imagine it's a top priority..why have you got your sights set on Strike Back, anyway?
It seems like something logical I would start out with. :-\
Recommend anything instead?
Bartender
04-10-2005, 11:00 PM
Earth vs the Wildhearts, their debut, is still what I consider their best full-length, regular album release, and is what I'd recommend first and foremost. P.H.U.Q., their second album, is also excellent, and slightly more mature, I suppose, but I hold it slightly below Earth vs.
I'd advise against getting Endless, Nameless or Landmines and Pantomimes as a first purchase for them. The former because it was their last album before they initially broke up in 1998, and it has a very strange, grating, pseudo-industrial production on it. Still some great stuff there, it's just kind of hidden. The latter because it was released against the band's wishes by their (evil) record company after they had broken up, and is really just an odds'n'sods collection of roughly mixed of song ideas they had been throwing about at the time.
If you want newer stuff (Vanilla Radio, OCD, etc), I'd recommend the excellently named Riff After Riff After Mother****ing Riff. It received both a Japanese and an American release, so you should be able to find it easily enough. The releases themselves are a little different from each other, though.
For live albums, I'd probably put ..Strike Back third in a list of three that I know of (read: can think of at the moment), behind Tokyo Suits Me (a Japanese import, which you're kind of unlikely to find) and Anarchic Airwaves (which is a live set recorded for the BBC, along with a small BBC studio session). It's still well worth buying, though, for the awesome cover as much as the music contained within. It'll have newer songs on too, which neither of the others do.
That said, you could just ignore all this advice and buy anything you can get your hands on. It's unlikely (in my eyes, impossible) that you'd end up with something you just plain didn't want (apart from maybe the two mentioned above), and when I first got into the band, I didn't follow reason at all. I heard one song, loved it, and went out and spent £38.99 on a Japanese import best of, more or less blind.

Is this THE Devin Townsend that was mentioned in the article? Because if so, I'm definetely intrigued.
I really like Riff After Riff, not only because it was the first album I got from Bartender/Munky_Magik.
Great band, I love how they blend so many influences into a fun, energetic vibe based around punk/rock.

Yeah, it is :) He joined them as a temporary guitarist around 1995, and I think he did vocals on a b-side around their weird, Endless Nameless period, in 1997.
When they reformed in 2001/2002, he toured as their support, and basically had fun thrashing the Wildhearts fan-dominated crowd to within an inch of their collective life every night.

04-11-2005, 02:52 AM
so what's going on with Ginger? He was working with Brides of Destruction and then suddenly left...anyone know why?
munky_magik
04-11-2005, 04:34 AM
I have no idea why he left either.
Apparently, according to someone on here, he's writing more solo stuff. He'll be doing something though, you can count on that.
I hope he just gets back to The Wildhearts soon, and decides to tour again :)
Bartender

04-11-2005, 06:23 PM
They only have one album out..."Here Come The Brides"
Butch Walker
04-11-2005, 08:30 PM
Ginger wrote, I think, 6 songs with the Brides, which should make the album, so that'll be something to listen for, but I don't like the Brides too much. I hate London and Tracii, and now that Nikki and Ginger have left, there's nothing that interests me.
The Wildhearts are wonderful, though, someone should do a full FA on them some time. If I had time I would, I may in future if I need to avoid studying for my exams, or perhaps Bartender might.

Whenever I'm asked for a favourite track, Everlone is the first to come to mind. It's then very quickly followed by Sky Babies, Loveshit, Show a Little Emotion, Suckerpunch, Sky Chaser High, Geordie in Wonderland, Splattermania, OCD, Vanilla Radio, Greetings From Shitsville, Nothing Ever Changes But the Shoes, Do the Channel Bop..basically I don't know :) And yeah, I do have the newest live album (several people here do, I think), and yes, it is rather good.
Did anyone see them live when Vanilla Radio was still a fresh, new track? I saw them at a festival in 2002, and they had a midget dressed as Elvis running around all day*. It was awesome.
*followed by a camera; I think they were filming for the Vanilla Radio video.

Partly as un upload for MXican, partly as a bump, and partly in wondering if anyone else likes any of The Wildhearts' members' other bands, here's a few songs by Ginger's 'main' project while the Wildhearts were broken up. I know magik likes them, at least.

Okay, here's some Clam Abuse. Beware though, it's very weird stuff :) Two of these tracks don't feature either of the two collaborators on vocals, either, so don't be surprised.
Clam Abuse - Message to Geri (http://s7.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=06QLO5R43JLPB3EYBMIFMC5JJ6) (yes, that Geri)
Clam Abuse - Unlucky in Love (http://s7.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1R37H3PBJJCPL1NEDDUH39WJZU)
Clam Abuse - Sunday Driving on a Thursday Afternoon (http://s7.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0BL865OE5L33K2563QJTY8YT5Y)
Clam Abuse - Barney Sings the Blues (http://s7.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=31OTQL6EVQ0XX1MPAP8O2O9B4J)
Those four are on the album (incidentally, two of them don't feature either of the two collaborators on vocals, so don't think I've uploaded the wrong thing - hopefully I haven't); this last one is a remix of one of the album tracks (which I prefer to the album version) which appeared on an Infernal Records sampler.

Not sure if there's all that much left to mention (including what the posts above me have said). Before The Wildhearts he spent some time in the Quireboys, but I don't know if he got around to recording anything with them. And he wrote the majority of a song on the Backyard Babies album Making Enemies is Good. Other than that, I don't think I know anything more that Ginger's directly involved in.

I really liked both of those songs, thanks :thumb:.

It was Brand New Hate:
How much input did you have into the Backyard Babies song Brand New Hate, and how much input did they have?
Lee & Nat
I wrote the entire song, they put a Wildhearts-esque riff in the middle (before the "I don't need you, I don't need to" section), took 50 per cent of the writing credit, and ensured that I never write anything for them again.
The Super$hit cover is really good, thanks for sharing. :)

Much needed bump.
Girlfriend Clothes now occupies the coveted title of "Best song ever" and should be revered accordingly. I long to cover this song one day, I can only imagine how much fun the extended middle section would be to play on stage with likeminded souls.
The version from Strike Back:

Girlfriend Clothes is a great song. I underrated it for a very long time, then suddenly realised how good it was sometime in the last year. It's a very fun song.

Hey, welcome back man.
I discovered the song from the live album they released last year, then I found out the studio version is even better.

Bumping this because I just (finally) got my hands on a CD-R of some early Wildhearts stuff. Nine tracks of demos from before Ginger was on vocals ("The Snake Demos") which I've known about for ages but never gotten around to getting myself a copy of, for no good reason. And seven tracks of Ginger with an acoustic guitar, backed by a cheapo drum machine ("The Lost Tapes"), which was news even to me upon buying it a couple of days ago.

Heh. I'll start uploading.
I'm only four tracks in for now, and it's awesome so far. Only one of the tracks is one that later goes on to be recorded properly, I think (Love U Til I Don't), and even the version of that here is rather different from the later one. The rest are all, essentially, new :-D
EDIT: And I think you'll like them, Plath. More glam than anything else they've done, I think. The vocalist helps, he sounds a lot more like an American glam vocalist than Ginger.

New songs :-D
Was the singer in any other bands? I remember reading about him aaaages ago. I'm glad Ginger took over though, even if it meant compromising glammity.

I don't think I know anything about him other than the name, unfortunately.
I'm also glad he took over, despite his big lack of confidence in his voice.
EDIT: omg omg omg there's a bit of a later song stuck in the middle of this one. And I totally can't remember what the later song is.

It's Dangerlust, I predict.

Nah, I don't think so. It's that bit that "da-dun, dadiddle-iddle-iddle dun", or something. You'll know it when you hear it, anyway, and hopefully you'll be able to fill me in.
EDIT (too many edits on this page): Snake is apparently formerly of Tobruk? I've never heard of them, though. RYM lists two Tobruks, one from the 70s and one from the 80s.

Well my audience has gone offline, but here you go;
The Snake Demos (35 MB) (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VACJ2W94)
Tracklist:
Kiss My Arse Before You Say Goodbye
Love U Til I Don't
Please Baby Please
Please Baby Please (second version)
The Violent Ones
Unsociable Emotions
Vive L'Amour
Who's Gonne Stop Lorraine
Wild Wine and Whiskey
The recording quality's not always the greatest, for obvious reasons, and the other one's on the way, too.
EDIT:
The Lost Tapes (27 MB) (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1V2WR4E0)
Tracklist:
Kiss My Arse Before You Say Goodbye
Who's Gonna Stop Lorraine
Please Baby Please
The Violent Ones
One More Night
Love U Til I Don't
Wild Wine and Whiskey
Ditto on recording quality (though if you for some reason only download one, make it the Snake demos).

Hope you like them. I've only had them a few hours myself. The Snake Demos are (mostly) great, but the Lost Tapes are really for fans only, if you know what I mean. Being a fan, you're alright of course, but what I mean is when I say he's backed by a cheapo drum machine, I mean a really cheap drum machine. The kind of thing you had when you were six, built into a keyboard or something :)

So I've listened to most of the Snake Demos now; it's good stuff. I'm not a huge fan of the singer, his voice is quite weak but the music is top drawer. One of the songs reminds me of the Georgia Satellites, that type of country-glam.
Thanks :)

I don't love his voice, but I don't mind it either. But then I suppose you're more experienced in glam vocalists than I. And yeah, I'm quite surprised that at least a couple of these didn't make it into 'real' songs later on.
If/when you get around to the listening to the Ginger/drum machine stuff, there's one song (The Violent Ones, I think) which doesn't seem to have either Ginger or Snake on vocals. I think they were recorded before Snake was part of the band, so that makes sense, but it sounds conceivably like Danny. And Danny didn't join the band until after Snake had come and gone, I think. So I've no idea who it is.

Heh, there's nothing wrong with his voice, I just prefer something a bit stronger.
Are you sure none of them were made into real songs? The Violent Ones sounds stupidly familiar, both the guitar melody and the chorus. These songs are really good, thanks again

Well bits of them surely made their way into future songs, but a lot of what's here sounds mostly new.
The Violent Ones is the one I was talking about yesterday actually, when I said I recognised the "da-dun, dadiddle-iddle-iddle dun" (around 3:40), though I've still be unsuccessful in figuring out where it's from :(
I know it's from one of their 'main' songs, too (as opposed to an obscure b-side, I mean), so it's annoying me.

When I was waiting for my train home today some guy stopped to talk to me about my Wildhearts shirt. Turns out he was a massive fan
Also, Mr. Bartender Man...where did the song Christeen come from?
