England hero? Or is he past it? Did he ever have it? Was he ever more than a photograph opportunity? Has his photogenic nature corrupted his football career? Have Real finally realised that shirt sales don't make up for lost championships and that they need an actual football team next season? Is it the end of Beckham's days in Spain? Is he just a ****ing twat?

David Beckham rules. His game is not complete, but his free kicks and crosses are superb.

Agreed^^ Becks is fantastic at his game which is passing, crossing and set pieces. He plays out of position most of the time for Real, so its little wonder that they haven't seen the best of him yet.

Beckham gets too much criticism, and in the friendly where SWP was played, I think it became apparent that Beckham is still better....

He still has yet to do anything as impressive as he was with Man U now at Real. I wouldn't want to pin him down simply by saying 'he's past his prime,' but the guy has yet to retain the physical and mental form of only a couple years ago. His freekicks are always on the spot, I doubt he'll ever lose that. I still don't think his play internationally and with Real merits his job as captain for England. Still playing right now in college, all I know is that the captain leads the team, through example, through his composure, morale, etc. Beckham doesn't really even train that hard for either of his sides. I think the guy can still be great, don't get me wrong, but he's been on a skid for quite some time.

The last two years at Utd he was very poor...

Except that in his last year there, they won the premiership, United fans voted him as their player of the year, and he had a couple brilliant games - like the one against Real, where he game off the bench to score 2 goals.

He's over-rated but a good player none the less. Wouldn't mind seeing him back at United.

yeah, its hard not to be over-rated though when the media makes you out to be the best player in the world.

He's not that good. In fifa 2002 he wasn't impressive at all. I'd go with ronaldo as a better man. Oliver Kahn is the best goalie though.:lol::lol:

There is no comparison between Ronaldo and Beckham. They are totally different types of players. A technically gifted winger is less essential to a team than a lethal striker is though. Anyway, moving to Madrid was the worst career move Becks could have made. I'm still upset with Sir Alex for what he did.

He's meh in my eyes right now. He's seen better years. I really hope Real dumps him. I'd also like to see Owen out of there as well, but that probably won't happen.
Beckham is an enormous asset when he has a point to prove. His work-rate trebles, and he delivers so much more.
Otherwise he's just average, yet prone to occasional moments of brilliance.

Yeah, he's like Matt Le Tissier in the regard, only better and prettier. He never used to be, for a couple of years he was well on his way to becoming the all-round player people had predicted. Maybe that's an overreaction, but he was a major asset. Now, he rarely puts in a decent performance for England, he's been poor whenever I see him play for Real, and I've heard bad reports at other times.

Spurs are rumored to be siging him next season, i really cant see why though. Over rated played, SWP needs his chance.

Badly off form form at the moment. Real Madrid were foolish buying him though, they could have bought ronaldinho that summer but they said they didnt because he was too ugly! So beckham is only there to sell shirts. Real Madrid missed out on eto'o aswell. When are they going to see that its performers that you need not names.
That's the point - Beckham is a massive money-spinner. He's the only footballer who has real fame in both North America and the Orient. Both of which are incredibly lucrative markets.
I agree it's performers they need on the pitch, but at the end of the day, they are a business.

I remember Beckham airballing a freekick over the goalposts during the world cup (maybe it wasnt the world cup, but he was playing for England). Doesnt seem like his freekicks are always so great.

Could be. I think it was last year, but I could be wrong. I think it ended up costing them the game, and afterward he was doing an interview and he pretty much said "I'm England's captain so dont give me ****."
I'd imagine a pro soccer player wouldnt screw up on that many penalty kicks, so you must be thinking of the right one.

I think it was against Turkey before Euro 2004.

Well he missed 2 penalties at the Euro's. Against France, which if scored would've meant a 2-2 draw, and against Portugal in a penalty shoot-out.

I can't remember whether he ballooned those, but now that you mentioned it he may have blazed one of those over too.

It would be one thing if he made only a few mistakes over a long period of time, but he's ****ed up plenty in a short period of time. Hence, while Real's thinking of getting rid of him. He costs too much. They can get younger, better talent for the price of one Beckham.

Hi guys. I'm new to the board and wanted to make my first post on something I knew a lot about.
Beckham was at his best when all he had to do was cross the ball for Cole, Yorke, Solskjaer and so on when United were at their peak. He soon got ideas above his station, thinking he could play central-midfield, and his performances went way downhill. His last season at United was very poor (to whoever said he got POY, I'm pretty sure it was van Nistelrooy who got around 40 goals). Ferguson knew he couldn't play centrally and was never going to risk it with the vastly superior Keane and Scholes dominating the Premiership in midfield. Ferguson also knew that Beckham was disrupting their play as he was always looking for the killer long ball (a similar thing is happening with Gerrard at the moment IMO). He rightly sold him and got a good price for him. True, United have not one the league since he left, but you can't just look at that as the only cause. The likes of Keane, Scholes and Giggs are not quite what they were, van Nistelrooy's been mostly injured and other teams in the Premiership have simply got better. The Arsenal team of last year and the Chelsea of this year were just too good for United. I highly doubt that United would have won the league with Beckham in the team.
As for his England career, I'd say it's been a disappointment that has been clouded by the odd good performance (Greece). His showings in France 98, Euro 2000, Japan 2002 and Euro 2004 were all very, very poor. I will never forgive him for lashing out at Simeone in 98 or bottling the tackle that lead to Brazil's equaliser in 2002. I don't think he's a natural leader and I don't think he has the ability to dominate a game like a decent central midfielder would. Since he's left United, he's been outclassed by Michael Ballack, Pablo Aimar, Emre, Valeron, Xabi Alonso and many others. Real Madrid were a disgrace last season, as was Beckham.
I think he's past his best but that his best was never as good as people made out. He was good at what he did, but he also lacked pace, couldn't tackle and had a bad temperament. His free-kicks are highly rated but he managed just 2 in the past 2 seasons.
Arguably the most overrated player of his generation.
(sorry to drag this topic back up, I just wanted to reply)

To Strat_Red, you make a good point, but I think Becks deserves more credit in WC 2002 than you gave him. He was, after all, playing on one leg so to speak.
