I wish there was more coverage of college hockey. Living in Oregon, the nearest college hockey area is Colorado, so I can never follow it.

Here's the TV listings, courtesy of USCHO.com

FF Semifinal Frozen Four Semifinal 1 Thu. 4/7 2:00 ESPN2
FF Semifinal Frozen Four Semifinal 2 Thu. 4/7 7:00 ESPN2
FF Final National Championship Game Sat. 4/9 7:00 ESPN

all times are Eastern, i believe.

It'll be nice to see. I went to this year's DIII tournament at Middlebury in Vermont, because my best friend plays for them (they won). NCAA hockey is very entertaining and combatrock, if you're new to the whole thing, I suggest watching it! You'll enjoy it!

Anyone else a big fan of junior hockey? I played juniors and I dunno, I love the level of play, and the whole no-cage thing, and being allowed to fight, as opposed to NCAA hockey.

Kind of confusing to explain, but ya know how they split sports into groups based on age? Like in football they have pop warner and pee wee and stuff? It's like that in hockey too. Junior aged players are between 16-20, and the goal of junior leagues is to prepare players for college (US leagues) or the pros (the Canadian Leagues). Technically you don't get paid, but it's a pretty sweet deal. In Canada it's much bigger than in the States, we got to play on TV and stuff.

Because they're under 20, several guys who have played in the NHL are currently playing juniors in Canada, because they aren't over the age limit.

There's a junior team or 2 in Texas, if you live anywhere near Frisco, there's a team there -- the Texas Tornado.

I played my senior year of high school (01-02) with the Chicago Freeze of the NAHL (my hometown team so I never hadda leave). Spent a year after high school bouncing around the Ontario Provincial Leagues (from B to A), spending some time in Markham was the best with the Waxers. I played in 4 games with the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL that year too.

something like this:
4 GP 27 PIM 0g 0a -3

pretty gaudy numbers! I didn't even get invited to try out the next year. I never really harbored hope of landing a scholarship or anything (besides the fact that I lost some eligability there), hockey was always just something I did for fun because I was good at it. I had one more year of eligability but my knees were quitting on me and after blowing one out playing Rat hockey I kinda figured it was time to go to college and be a normal American kid again.

So to answer your question, "yes"

Depends on what level of junior hockey (it goes from C level to A (USA) or Major Junior A (Canada). But overall, yea, you have to be pretty **** good. Like I said before the top junior leagues in Canada have some guys who played in the NHL last year on their teams.

No you don't get paid, but all your living expenses, education, food and gear is paid for. The year in Canada, I got to live with a family in the town I was playing with, my billet (host) family. The idea behind that is to keep players in as much of a family atmosphere as possible. Some guys live with the same family for 4 years.

The travel isn't all that great. Bus rides everywhere to places as exotic as...Brampton, Barrie, Sarnia, Sudbury...exciting stuff haha.

As for roller hockey -- looking at my stick I like to use for it -- it's an Easton Z-Bubble shaft with an Easton Synergy blade. Use a 2 piece for land hockey because it's easy to snap a blade, and it's cheaper to replace a blade than the whole stick entirely. The combo I have is expensive, but overall, 2-piece is best I think for roller hockey. What are you using right now?

They make cheapo sticks for roller hockey -- overall I'd say stay away from the plastic bladed ones. Everyone I know that plays roller hockey competitively uses a pretty normal hockey stick for it.

I used to prefer wood sticks, but they were free, so I use composites now.

i have tried a couple of different sticks...

the one i have right now is a Easton Z-Carbon 50...but the blade like insides are comming out making it hollow..that stick cost 21 dollars

another stick i used was a cheap Franklin 2 piece with a plastic blade..the blade dosnt ever break but the thing is after playing with it for about a month its time to get a new stick cos hte plastic wears down

for a wood blade on street hockey, dont tape it, it works better because the tape gets caught on the groubd, thats why it tears, if its composite, sorry i cant help you, never tried that on street

combatrock -- the tape is to aid with catching and carrying the puck. It's special tape it takes a while to wear down, but it does too. With a composite on the street, get a roll of it (any sporting good store should have it -- just ask for hockey tape) take a strip about the length of the blade, and run it along the bottom, so part of it comes up along the front and sides, and covers the bottom. Don't do it vertically like ice hockey players do -- its a waste of tape for the street.

yeah i wouldnt use friction tape for street, thats worthless, try to find something that dosent wear down and wont get hung up when your trying to take the shot, thats why i dont use tape, yet i use wood for street hockey

i'm not sure, you know that clear tape for hockey that they use to tape the skates for extra ankle suppot, try that, it probably wont tear, and its slick, but i haven't tried it, just a thought

Bauer Vapor V, yes they are on XXX now but its by no means a bad stick
and add a blade, $40, assuming you use a senior stick, if its intermediate then it'll be cheaper

http://www.hockeymonkey.com/hockeymonkey/bauer1000rbjr.html

a Bauer blade $16

not that expensive, there are probably less expensive composites, search the sites, and then some other sites, you can probably ask them to put it together if you want them to

and if you still want a one-peice composite, heres a cheaper one, its nike, which is joined with Bauer

you're going to need a heat gun to change the blade. either your dad or someone you know's dad probably has one, theyre not too hard to come by. Anyways, you need to melt the glue on the blade (the part that connects with the shaft) before inserting it into the slot.

Reebok stuff now is actually CCM stuff that's been relabelled because of those jerkoffs buying out Canadian Cycle and Motor (the helmets Canadian juniors are wearing this year have the Reebok swoosh-esque thing, but I have the same helmet from 2 years ago made by CCM. Also, the jersies say Reebok on the outside, but all the interior tags say CCM. The 'new' Reebok skates are just relabeled CCMs)....It really sucks and is gay in my opinion, but the equiptment is alright, Reebok says the higher-end stuff will be marketed as Reebok and the lower end stuff will be CCM. So apparently the quality is just fine, but it still pisses me off.

ANYWAYS.

Judging by the fact that it says the blade is fiberglass reinforced, it's a wood stick. Price is right too, go for it. Just be forewarned, depending on what surface you're using it on, the bottom of the blade can/will wear down over time. (Wood and asphalt just aren't the best of friends, but it depends on how rough the asphalt is). Hockey sticks break and need to be replaced due to wear, it sucks when at times sticks cost over 150 bucks, but it's true.

the way the blades are made is kinda like this -- they take a very thin layer of wood, and press it to another thin layer, and press it to another thin layer (with glue holding it together) until they have about 22 of these layers. then you have your stick blade. The stick you're looking at, (as well as most wood sticks) is reinforced in those layers with fiberglass to make it stronger and less likely to break.

As for chipping and breaking, it all depends on your use (shot) and the circumstances surrounding it. All sticks wear down over time. It's just a fact. They lose some 'pop' and the blades can wear down (especially on asphalt -- theres just so much friction). If you shoot/pass/stickhandle properly, it shouldn't be a huge deal. It's just something that hey, happens.

As for wood compared to composites --
When I was a kid, I used the SherWood PMP 6090 (i think) Coffey stick. It's the best stick I ever used -- I used them for years (not the same particular one), and rarely broke one. When I switched to forward I started using composites, first the Easton UltraLite (great shaft) and then the Synergy. The Synergy when it first came out was revolutionary, but I kept breaking the **** things. They were 150 a pop, but luckily had a warrenty and the team replaced them anyways. Then I switched to the Syngergy Stealth which is 200 bucks. Same thing, didn't like em too much, and they broke, and I don't even have that hard of a shot. Now I use the Sherwood Momentum and it's the best stick I've had in years. Sticks are all about personal preference. Hockey players are very particular about their equipment, especially sticks. Find one you like and have some fun, and don't worry about them wearing down or breaking -- it's just a matter of time before one or the other happens. However, it can be a very long time, so I wouldn't worry about it much. But if you're taking a lot of slap shots on asphalt, it'll happen sooner. I don't mean for it to scare you, and you can certianly get alot of playing time out of a stick. I still have some in the garage from when i was 12.

Red Stripe
04-16-2005, 08:53 AM
^ yeah i don't like the synergy because they break, i was forced to buy one because i broke my CCM Vector and it couldn't be fixed, so i got a synergy, that silver one, don't know the name of it, my favorite stick is the TPS i just recently got the Response Plus, then got the Bauer Endure, the Bauer Endure dosen't break, the entire stick has shock absorbing on it. If that reebok stick is wood, see if there is a wood Bauer or TPS with a price you're willing to pay. Unless someone says that it is a really good stick.

wrist shots will wear down the blade, and slapshots will break the blade more often. wrist shots wear down the blade because your scraping the blade against the ground for most of the shot, and slapshots, if you mess up the shot, you whack the ground at basicly full strength, but thats only if you mess up the shot.
