Yeah, but the thing is that you can listen to this album and tell they weren't ripping off Hopesfall.
It just seems like everything they make is really their own thing.
They are most definitely independent of one another. Thrice is neat.

I don't know how to describe it, but Teppei's guitar work on the WHOLE album just makes me gape in awe. Simple, yet perfect use of many effects and catchy without being cheesy or anything... anyway. /rant

Is The Earth Will Shake like the heaviest song on Vheissu?
It was written in drop A tuning. I dunno if that means anything...

Setlist was much like that in Montreal. They were some differences, such as Paper Tigers which they didn't play... bastards. They played slower songs though, namely Between the End and Where We Lie and Atlantic.
Dustin took the mic in the crowd for To Awake(...), too. Their performance overall was flawless.

Yeah, you should have told me you were going. They really were flawless. Dustin nailed every note and all their harmonies were spot on. I thought it was awesome that they played "Betrayal Is A Symptom" but I would have liked to see "Of Dust And Nations" and especially "Stand And Feel Your Worth."

yeah betrayal is a symptom is one of my favorite thrice songs. I thought the setlist was pretty good. A nice balance of new and old songs and heavy and mellow songs. It would have been so cool if they played a song from Identity Crisis, but all those songs are pretty much retired by now. what part of jersey are you from?

"Music Box" and "Of Dust And Nations" are like my favorites right now.
I thought Music Box was the weakest to be honest. The intro and outro of Of Dust And Nations are mindblowing.

Like Subtle Dagger mentioned before, the idea of Music Box is a bit cheesy, still the song is good. I must say "Image of the Invisible" is the most skipped track of the album so far for me
I don't think any tracks are skippable on Vheissu.
That bit in Hold Fast Hope where it's just this fast punk drumbeat on the crash cymbal and Dustin screaming would sound so incredible live.

I saw Thrice on November 3rd. It was incredible. They put on a great show. I was a little upset they didn't play Blood Clots and Black Holes... but they played everything else I wanted to to here.
I think Between The End And Where We Lie is currently my favorite.

Being a very old album, I'm surprised I haven't listened to Vheissu more. I think there are a lot of well done tracks though.
The only bad thing about the album is that once it's almost over all I think about is blasting Cold Cash And Colder Hearts or some other fast song.

BCaBH isn't even that great. The main guitar line and some of the time changes are really cool but the end leaves a bit to be desired.
Blood Clots rules. But my favorite from The Artist has to be either Hoods On Peregrine or Abolition or Don't Tell.

My favorite off of Artist was probably a tie between Abolition, Hoods, and Killing Moon. Killing Moon is a guilty pleasure though.

Because I actually heard the first version they put up on their site and it was awesome. On the record it's dumbed down a lot, and it sort of sounds like Iron Maiden.
They had another name for Melting Point when they had it up on their site before Artist came out too. It was just "The Promise of Safety" back then.

Yep.
Illusion has more crappy songs. I can only think of one on Vheissu.
Vheissu just goes way beyond The Illusion Of Safety. TIOS just seems so immature and amateurish compared to Vheissu.
Don't get me wrong, I still love TIOS.
cbmartinez
11-15-2005, 03:02 PM
Vheissu is missing something. It's not as complete as an album like TIOS was. Plus my biggest gripe is that they sacrificed some of the instrumental technicality to go for the more ambient and epic feel. If they had kept the instrumental skill of TAITA and IOS when writing the songs, then I would place it over IOS.

Ha, I disagree with that almost completely. If anything, IoS has the best singular songs but the worst feel of completeness. The songs don't flow together very well, some songs (Deadbolt, Beltsville) have tacked-on boring endings, and there's a huge feeling of amateurishness and ineptitude for arranging. Vheissu feels like a completed project, like everything goes together perfectly.

There are mellow parts, but there are plenty of fast parts. It's a lot like early U2 to me, only it really feels like Thrice does their own thing.
Go buy it, don't go basing an album off of something you heard.

I saw Thrice the 12th of October, and they played a setlist similar to the one posted earlier. Let's see if I can remember all the songs played...
Silhouette
Music Box
Paper Tigers
Artist in the Ambulance
The Melting Point of Wax
Kill Me Quickly
Cold Cash and Colder Hearts
Stare at the Sun
Betrayal is a Symptom
Under A Killing Moon (I think)
Deadbolt
They aren't in order, but I think that was about it.
I agree with the IoS supporters...I think IoS is a bit more solid and I'm not a huge fan of Vheissu, but its slowly growing on me. I'm addicted to Hold Fast Hope for some reason...

Bump to get some discussion going.
I was listening to "The Weight Of Glory" yesterday and I realized how blatantly Christian/faith-oriented/spiritually based it is.
A ring of Pharisees and one of them was me
We loved the letter but not the spirit
An infidelity, a woman on her knees
She begged for mercy, we couldn’t hear it
The teacher looked from us, his finger in the dust
We felt the chill and it shook us to our bones
Then he raised his head and this is what he said,
“The one who has not sin should throw a stone”
Pretty blunt narrative of the story in the Bible in which the prostitute is being prepared to be stoned and Jesus stops it. I've always felt that a lot of the songs on Vheissu were very faith based. Though "Image Of The Invisible" is more of a call for being to stand up and be heard, you cannot deny that the phrase "Image Of The Invisible" is a common epithet for God. "Between The End And Where We Lie" which although I believe is based more around Dustin's struggle to find a way and meaning makes some references with the theme of daylight and "they tried to betray me with a kiss" reffering to Judas' betrayal of Jesus the night before his crucifixition. "For Miles" with it's lyrical focus of a friend who has shed his blood and "the greater love." "Music Box" and it's anthemic chorus of "we are not alone, we feel an unseen love, we are sons and heirs of grace, we are children of a light that never dims, a love that never dies" could be seen as a metaphor for children of God. I think "Like Moths To Flame" is one of the most blatant examples of faith-based lyrics with lines like "I could never be ashamed of you," "I will follow you, lay down my life" and " will follow you, lay down my life" and "once again the bread and wine, but it seems the meanings may be deeper still this time." The ending actually seems to portay the story of Peter denying Jesus' name three times before the sun rises according to Jesus' prophecy.
So, I was wondering what you all thought on the matter. Thrice has had some faith-based songs before ("To What End," which deals with faith vs science) but I need to look at their older songs a bit more. I'm wondering what affected Dustin in such a way that the lyrics took such a much more spiritual and even Biblical approach.
And on another note, while analyzing the lyrics, I found a couple more subplots. There are couple references in the first couple tracks about being fed and raised in "this machine" or "the machine." Also, a correlation seems to exist between "Hold Fast Hope" and "Red Sky," both having imagery to do with ships, "Hold Fast Hope" with its references of being tossed over and perhaps making it through a storm and "Red Sky" with it's colorful, beautiful yet tragic of a ship sinking and the crew finding it's final resting place at the bottom of the sea.
So, I just thought I'd try to start a little discussion. What are your thoughts?

i agree. a lot of the lyrics appeared to be religious references to me too. and as far as their older stuff, besides dustin's fondness for c.s. lewis that has influenced some of their stuff, deadbolt's lyrics are clearly taken almost straight out of the Bible.

I thought that had to do with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein..

This new album seems to have stronger, faith-based lyrics.
It does bother me, however, that this leads people to call them a Christian Hardcore band.

Hopesfall and In Pieces are two bands that are similar to Thrice in that they've made their songs less "hardcore" and focused more on texture and songwriting. However, my prediction for Thrice goes beyond what I expect from those other two bands.

All the songs on Vheissu worked but it just seemed like they could be writing more complex stuff.

I predicted it in my review. Mix of avant garde hardcore, radio rock, and electronics but more intelligently than Vheissu. Look out for jazz instrumentation too. In the same way everyone craps their pants about O.K. Computer even though Kid A is better, Thrice will release their Kid A next.
If they release an album on the same level as Kid A that will be definately enough for me to get back into them since I stopped listening to them when TAITA came out. I will also **** myself.

Saw Thrice on ToC Saturday. They were pretty awesome, in my opinion, Dredg was the highlight of the night but Thrice were close behind. Dustin seemed to be having some small vocal problems and shyed away from the mic on some of the high parts for the songs off Vheissu. Some of the more out spoken crowd took a dislike to their slower songs(For Miles, Red Sky), one guy shouted out "I want to hear CHAOS!", I just laughed.
There were a lot of other crappy hardcore bands there too, during Atryeu my buddies and I went and played Mario Strikers on the gamecubes that were set up :), that was fun. Story of the Year put on a hell of a show, don't like their music too much but they are excellent performers.

Dredg or Thrice?
Dredg only got to play a few songs, I believe they started out with Ode to Sun then played Same Ol' Road, The Tanbark Is Hot Lava, and a songs from Leitmotif I believe it was Yatahaze but I'm not sure(I'm not all that familiar with that album). At the end of Yatahaze a bunch of roadies came out to reset the stage and the drummer stayed on and kept playing while they took away his set and once they finally took the snare away he turned to the keyboard and just kept playing.
As for Thrice, their set was pretty long and started with Image followed with a variety of stuff from all their albums, Red Sky, Earth will Shake, Deadbolt, For Miles, In Years To Come(I think), AITA, Stare at the Sun, maybe a few others but I don't remember.

And for an encore dustin came out with an acoustic guitar and said "its just you and me for a minute" and played stare at the sun acoustic. But then everyone else came out and they played to awake and avenge the dead. Dustin jumped in during the very end. It was amazing. I got a picture of him jumpin into the crowd right infront of me. As a lot of you may know, for the past month or so, weve been writing and recording our next album. We didnt want to say anything official until wed finalized a lot of the details, but now that were getting rolling on it, we want you guys to be the first to know what the plans are for this album.
We have started writing and recording a 4 disc concept record, with each disc being themed sonically and thematically to correspond with the four natural elements - earth, air, water and fire. The final album will have somewhere between 20 and 25 songs, divided between the 4 discs.
We are approaching the whole project in a new way for us, both writing and recording. Writing with these elements in mind, we are letting them shape the direction of the songs sonically and thematically. And for the first time, were recording the record ourselves as we write it, freeing us up to change things as we go.
We are very excited about the project and are looking forward to sharing more details as the record takes shape. Were also in the process of setting up a site dedicated to keeping you up to date on our progress, so keep a look out for that in the near future.
For our friends on the west coast, we have two events to talk about. The first is the Race for the Cure later this month. Well be doing the race this year along with our friends Chuck Ragan and The Cold War Kids. Dustin, Chuck, and the Cold War Kids will be doing a special acoustic show after exclusively for those who attend the Race with us. All of the sign up details are posted on our MySpace page.
Also, we wil be heading out on a few dates in October, with two awesome bands - These Arms are Snakes and Planes Mistaken for Stars. Were putting together a brand new setlist, digging up some old songs we havent played in a while, songs weve never played live before, and a couple of the new songs were working on.
Stay tuned for more details about the elements, videos, and pictures. Well get to all of that as the album progresses. We look forward to seeing you all soon.

The only thing I think Vheissu needed more of was the technicality of The Artist And The Ambulance. Though the focus was on being atmospheric and melodic, I know that they can use their superb musical skill to create that kind of music. All the songs on Vheissu worked but it just seemed like they could be writing more complex stuff.
Vheissu is much more technical than TAITA. For evidence I site Riley's growth as a drummer, Dustin's vocal growth, and the use of piano.
The end.

gg knowing what technicality is in regards to music
The guitars on Vheissu are much less technical. Dustin sticks to mainly open chords and Teppei's lead lines are slower and not as much "maximum shr3d." If you can't hear that, you're an idiot. Think of the intros of "Blood Clots And Black Holes," "Under A Killing Moon" or even "To Awake And Avenge The Dead" for an older example. That's technicality, it's tough stuff to play. Like I said originally, the playing style on Vheissu is much more about utilizing effects to create atmospheric lines. The guitarwork is not bad, it's just not as technical.

using a keyboard and "more sounds" doesn't make music technical.
The more sounds incorporated into a piece of music, the more technical the sound of the music. For instance, composing a symphony versus writing a song on an acoutsic guitar. The far ends of the spectrum, but it makes the point. The additional instrumentation adds more technicality to the music piece as a whole by requiring additional attention to mix and such.
cbmartinez
09-12-2006, 08:54 PM
Well, in my original comment I clearly stated I was talking about the technicality of the guitars.
And to be honest, I think Riley's drumming was better on Illusion of Safety and The Artist And The Ambulance and I thought Eddie's bass playing was pretty subdued and simplistic compared to those two albums too. (correct me if I mixed those two up) So, they added some piano and organ, I wouldn't call that technicality.
Permanent Solution

You also mentioned knowing what technicality is in regards to music. I agreed the guitars were more techincal on other albums.
The drumming on Vheissu is way better than on other albums. TAITA is great Punk drumming, but Vheissu is just great drumming period. Bass on IOS is boring, though TAITA was more inventive. I'd say bass was equally good on TAITA or Vheissu.
But instrument technicality is not the only form of technicality in music. Writing a symphony with only half notes would still require more technical ability musically than playing a 30 second blisteringly fast guitar solo.
cbmartinez
09-12-2006, 09:06 PM
Right, I agree, I guess. I don't know if I would call adding more instruments as technicality as much as complexity or a multidimensional aspect to their music. But yes, I agree that technicality in regards to music as a piece could be adding more instrumentation and complexity to it.

Just something to make it a little more interesting. Like Palumbo has a unique voice, Geoff Rickley is way off key and just sings as emotionally as he can. Chuck Ragan sounds like a punk Tom Waits, the guy from Coheed sings real high. Anything really that makes him more interesting would be cool.
Dustin is just a decent singer. Nothing offensive, nothing that stands out. I still like Thrice and everything but they couldn't ever be one of my favourite bands just cause his voice is so plain.
