Ive had my eye on a few mics that im gonna need for recording because I need a new one. I would like one with a 1/4 plug...but I dont think its nessesary. I want a good quality mic for recording thats as cheap as possible. Please post links if possible! thanks!

If recording guitar etc it is worth checking out some underground asian companies who make dynamic mics. I used to do guitar with something called a WEILISI DM-200. It was great for the 10 bucks it came for, I even did a more-than-satisfactory vocal session with it once.

I cant find anything on the internet, but here's a photo of it:

It comes with an XLR --> 1/4 cable

Anyway, for guitar etc it is worth starting out with some cheap dynamic mics because they often yield better results than expected. For vocals, get a small-diaphraghm condenser which isn't too cheap but will be below, say, 60 euro. Try and get a battery-powered electret one, because they don't cost as much and I'm assuming you have no phantom poer facilities. It's not worth spending money on a more expensive condenser until later.

The SM57 will last a lot longer. otherwise, they're very similar.

I disagree. The SM57's, in my opinion, have better clarity in the resonant range. Additionally, I think they're much better for distant miking. I've had problems picking up room/ambient/distant mic sounds w/ the 8500s.

I'd never use a dynamic for distant micing, its really not what they're designed for. Its intresting to hear you find more clarity, I'll remeber that. The freq. curves are very similar, so that's surprising to hear.

but then,. i guess the 8500 is dual purpose whereas the 57 is prmimarilt instrument.

I don't mean ambient miking, I mean 3-5 feet away, for things like saxophone or auxilary percussion. I know you generally should stick w/ condensers for those too, but sometimes budget/gear availability gets in the way of that.

yeah. An instyrument mic a couple of feet away probably works very well for horns, actually.
