I've been using this program for a while now to record live cassette tapes of my jam band to the computer and I've never had this problem till now:
Even with the line signal in audacity set to 0.0 I get audible distortion and visible clipping peaks on track in Audacity. I tried lowering the input signal in Windows and it doesn't seem to effect Audacity at all.
What can I do to lower the signal?
This may sound really obvious, but how bout turning the volume donw on your tape player?

There is no volume control on the tape deck. I don't know what else to say.
The only thing there is, is RECORD volume, the input level. However, this has been left the same since the last time I recorded with the tape deck.
Can anyone help me?

Try updating your version of Audacity if it's not the most recent. Additionally, I have noticed that the built-in sound device controls for Audacity are a bit buggy, so try adjusting stuff using the Volume Control supplied w/ Windows, or whatever the tool is called when using OS X.
Be sure to post this bug as a problem to the Audacity users listeserv (http://audacity.sf.net) has a link. The devs read that and choose what problems/features to work on based in part upon requests f/ that listserv.
