I'm interested in a career as a studio engineer and I want to know in order to get a start on learning the trade, what would be most beneficial for me to get, what im thinking of getting (for my brithday) is an 8 track mixer and vocal mics, since I am a drummer and already have a drum set (Sonor 3k1! :-d) I was also thinking about getting a set of drum mics, given that..what mixer would you reccomend? what drum mics would you reccomend? what extra equipment/software is neccesary, and reccomended? From what I've heard the best way to get a start in studio engineering is to do it.

definitely personal expirience in a home stduio is the best place to start!
note: MIXERS use CHANNELS never tracks. A track is something you record onto, on a computer or tape/digital multitracker. A channel is simply a grouping of controls to which the input singal is routed.
To start with, get a mixer. This will allow you to learn the basics of e.q., routing, stereo, and basic mixer operation. get some mics, and start recprding into your pc. you might thinking aobut buying some better stuff top record on down the line.

I am interested becoming an engineer myself and I am in the same postion as you. (fatal) But, I was wondering if I sound get a mixer, audio interface, or both. It would be helpful if you could tell me exactly what both do and what the difference is. I have had very little recording experience. Thanks

Well...after asking employee at a local music shop who is a engineer himself, (not full time but he does do serious work) he reccomended a boss 8 track mixer with cd burner and two condenser mics (not sure what brand) and a bass drum mic to start out with...which sounds like a fairly decent idea to me but the downside is that it runs about 1000$..*sigh* thanks for the input airborne
ps. I saw my mistake, and 8 channel mixer is what he reccomended I get...

boss 8 track mixer
recorder
i know those, well if you want to start recording straight away it seems like a good idea, but there's a lot to learn about music tech basics with a mixer that you don't get with a recorder. Basic stuff that you can learn by simple DJ-ing with the faders.
