I found an old midi-keyboard in my garage today, what kinda software should I use with it? It says "MK-61 Midi keyboard controller" on it....

What kind of computer do you have.. pc or Mac? This makes a difference.
Also, start pricing a usb midi interface that is operating-system specific.. for example you would use something like a Midisport (http://www.smartshopper.com.cy/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?category=PDAH&item=PDAHMI-004&type=store&template=PD) for Either system.

The midi ports in the back of the mk61 have to plug into the midisport which then plugs in to your computer.

Then you configure your midi driver.

Then you run the appropriate software.

If you have a mac, you might already have Garageband (http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/) 1 or 2 that is an All-in-one studio. And will interface seamlessly with the mk61. This is your best option.

If you have a pc, you'll need to download freeware like Sampletank LE (http://www.sampletank.com/Main.html?STRTPlayerLE).

I have the gameport cable and i connected that to the computer. I'm not going to want to spend alot of cash on this, because I don't really play keyboard, I mostly play guitar, but I just wanted to check it out since I saw it. I'll check the stuff you posted out though, sampletank seems interesting!

I can't get into the user area to download Sampletank LE, you need to purchase one of their products to get into it... Could you download it for me and send it or link me to it or something? Any help would be greatly aprechiated...

Ok, so, I got it to work with Cubase and sampletank 2, i also manage to get it to work with some other stuff i cubase. However, theres a small problem, whenever I play something theres like a .5s delay before it comes out. I know that its not the signal from the keyboard to the computer, because i can see the signal coming in to cubase long before the sound comes out. Theres like this keyboard in cubase that turns red whenever i hit a key, and it turns red far before i hear the actual sound. Does anyone know how i can fix this?

Ahh.. curse you! dreaded latency.

Sampletank can really slow down with certain configs.. too bad you cant run it straight without cubase... and that might not help.
hmmm.

do a quick test for me..

It's been a while.. but cubase should have a virtual instrument that is bundled with it.. i think it's called "neon".

Now that you've gotten sample tank to work.. using neon will be a snap. It's basically the same config as an old analog KORG poly 6 but its a module.

So.. switch over to neon and tell me if you're getting the same latency.

If yes.. it's the gameport.

If no, it's sampletank. Then.. you should go in the VST direction..
let us know and i'll explain.

I tried that out, worked much much better, however, there was still some latency, like 0.1s or something, probably due to the port. It works alot better, however, it's still pretty annoying to play when the sounds don't come out directly. Do you know if theres some kinda cable or something that I can purchase without spending too much money that will reduce the latency somewhat?

Just to use a better interface.

Usb might be faster.. like the midisport (http://www.smartshopper.com.cy/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?category=PDAH&item=PDAHMI-004&type=store&template=PD)

However.. there is some inherent latency based on your processor. What are you using?

Sampletank gives me the slightest bit of latency.. but its only noticible sometimes.

I don't notice "REason" at all.

And I don't hear any Garageband latency. Do you have a MAc?

I have a pc. It's an Athlon 2600 XP+ processor (1.92ghz barton), 512 MBs of ram, Asus a7n8x-x motherboard and since my good graphics card broke down some time ago, I'm using an old Riva TNT n64 32mb graphics card, i reckon this shouldn't really matter though, the soundcard i'm using is a Hercules Gamesurround Muse 5.1.

Sorry to interject - I have just bought an MK61 on ebay. Foolishly I didn't discover that it has no power adapter socket until afterwards. Anyone know (in relative layman's terms as I'm pretty crap with techno' stuff) whether there's any way to make a power lead for it so I can use it for live stuff with a synth?

Im actually trying to set up midi on my computer too, i already have a midi cable but have no jack for it to go into on my computer. So i can either buy a midi to usb interface or grab me one of those midi to game card cables but those seem to be hard to find, the ones i found are 20 bucks which just for 20 bucks more i could buy an interface.
