View Full Version : Do you have Talent?

Do you think you have musical talent? Not technical skill, or a well trained ear, but raw talent that is often refered to as a gift or "musican genius". Are you gifted with musical creativity, and know what sounds good together, can compose good riffs and have that special something that sets you apart?
You can vote anonymously, I'm just curious to see if these results will be similar to that of a magazine article I read.

I think I do. I've been able to pick up guitar pretty quickly.

Pretty sure I am. Would there be a copy of the article online or something? It sounds like it could be interesting.

I think that if your musicly good(if that makes any sense)then you have talent. most guitarists can play a instrument besides guitar. if your good at music period your most likely talented...you could just not be good at gutiar yet! practice is the only way eddie got that way!

I don't think I am by any strech of imagination an excellent guitar player. I'm decent at best. I have no innate gift or anything.
What I do have going for me is determination, and a love of making music. I'm very hard on myself, which results in me always giving my best.
Edit - I voted no in the poll, just in case you are wondering.

It was on paper and not online, no copies on the net that I am aware of. I could type it out but that would take hours :)
Basically it talks about how most musicians believe they have talent and like to compare themselves to other well known musicians. Its kind of like how everyone thinks they are a good driver, to those of you who drive cars.
I don't mean talent in the sense that you can pick up an instrument learn it really quickly, I mean in the sense that you can be creative with it and produce good sounds... not just scale runs or improvisions.
Anyway, thank you for the votes... I was quite surprised at the results both in the article and on here, seeing as it says that most of the other arts (dance, art, acting) are quite the opposite saying most think they are "decent" at best.
P.S I voted "I don't know" just because I really hope I am gifted, but so far I have not seen too much that sets me apart from the rest.

They say most musicians would classify themselves as decent at best? It seems to me that every musicians thinks they are the best musicians since [insert iconic musician here]. I'm surprised more people didn't vote yes.

i dont think that i am good yet, but i definetely have some major musuical ability, a lot more than most people i know. i have only been playing guitar for 5 months, but i have practiced at least two hours a day every single day since then. i go online and study music theory independently, and i think i know my stuff. i am a lot better than most people i know who have been playing for a year. and plus im only 15 so ive got a lot of time to get better :)

I think I have talent I am a self taught guitarist. I taught myself to learn by ear and feel, I write my own music I know nothing about music theory whatsoever I write and compose my own tunes I basically play everything that comes out of my head what I hear 24 hrs all the time and when I tell people that they are kinda amazed or what not. you may not believe me but I believe I have some talent :thumb:

IMO the perfect balance between confidence and modesty makes a good musician.
Too much confidence gives you an ego, and you think your stuff is a lot better than it really is... too much modesty may cause you to be too hard on yourself and ignore the talent you may really have. A bit of both lets you jugde your music honestly, and the confidence motivates you and keeps you going.

No I said other artisans classify themselves as decent, I don't see how that is as most of the hollywood bigshots think their the best since sliced bread :P

Let me tell you a little (ok not so little) story about talent.
So.. there we were in college. Sitting in piano studio with our professor, Dr. Sharpe.
It was my first semester, so I knew Dr. Sharpe was a good musician. Somebody told me that he won some huge contest in Germany called the Internaional Brandenberg Concerto Contest. He was very humble, in his late 30's. But, I had a little pride about myself.. I mean, I thought I was a pretty good pianist... been playing for most of my life, you know. I got to thinking... I'll probably be as good as him someday soon.
I think most of the guys in my studio were good. We knew we had a LOT of room to grow.. but we all knew we were good.
My buddy, Brian liked to always try and learn really really hard pieces.. like Ravel and stuff. Virtuoso stuff. I knew he had just started hacking away at some monster impossible piece in his bag.
So.. we all got into this discussion about Key signatures. Dr. Sharpe was sitting at the piano.
He asked us a question. "Do you think a piece of music is ACTUALLY different if it is played in Different Keys?" We all got talking about it. I mean.. notes are just math. Just wavelengh intervals. Same interval from key to key.. so around and around we went.
Dr. Sharpe said. Well, lets just listen and see.. "does anybody have any music on them?"
AHA (I thought).. (you know where I'm going).. (lets trip him up a little). I said, " hey brian, you got that NEW piece?" our eyes met. He smiled. Oh yeah.. this was going to be good!
So brian pulled out this music. Handed it to Dr. Sharpe. We watched him as he put the music up on the piano.. scratched his head, his eyes focused. And then he said, "ok.. this piece is in F#minor.. now everybody listen."
And then he started playing.
Ok. This is where we started freaking out.
Perfect. I mean NOT a Single mistake! ( i started getting chills)
Played the first two pages. Full speed. SIGHT READING. Never seen the piece before in his life.
Brian and I looked at each other.. (Oh my God.) Keep in mind that Brian was still working on the first 8 measures after 2 weeks.
Ok.. it gets better.
So he stopped. And then he said.. "ok, that was in F#minor.. NOW lets listen to it in C#minor."
And then.. the most amazing thing I have ever seen a musician do in my entire life happened.
He picked up the music off of the piano and gave it back to Brian.. (who took it with shaking hands). And then he started playing the piece again.. This time in C#minor (different KEY)....FROM MEMORY! NO music.
I almost started peeing myself.
Do I have talent? Relative to who?
Relative to most people... yes.
Relative to Dr. Sharpe, or any other Virtuoso.. I will never, ever, be that good. Ever. I can't do that. I don't even know how somebody's mind works who can do that.

I'm not that bothered, I'd say I'm a good lyricist and maybe talented in that respect, I can throw off a good set of lyrics in about 5 minutes. But apart from that I don't really care, I know I have a tonne of passion and that's good enough for me.

i believe i do. i was able to pick up guitar, learn everything on my own. and ( not to sound like a cocky person) have become better pretty much everyone i know, beside a couple of guys who have been playing about 5 years and take lessons every week. I feel i just learn things very well on my own.

It's me trying to say I have a tonne of passion.
Talent does not equal ability.
A talented pianist can be exceeded in skill by an untalented pianist. Talent is merely an advantage. Vis a vis, a tall inexperienced basketball player(his height is akin to talent in this scenario) cannot neccessarily defeat a 5ft9 experienced basketball play with alot of ability.

ah, yes. this is why dave gilmour is a better guitarist than Yngwie malmsteen.
true, Yngwie is faster, but he has zero songwriting ability and his work is all boring as hell.

I voted no
Even though I can play guitar and drums pretty well, I can write pretty neat songs and I believe in them etc
I don't think I'll ever have a gift like...Chris Cornell, Josh Homme, or Danny Carey to say 3 of my favourite musicians
And that guy with the story about the piano player  whoahhhh
