midi software?

my friend had a program on his computer and he was able to plug a midi controller into it and assign a bunch of cool sounds to the midi controller, and the sound went out the computer speakers. i have a midi output on my keyboard and want to do the same, so does anybody know a good free/inexpensive program to do this? thanks.

You need to run the keyboard thru a midi interface. Read this post here. (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7052948&postcount=5) A good free sound module would be something like.. sample tank. (http://www.sampletank.com/Main.html?STRTPlayerLE) Give it a try.. but be patient.
