View Full Version : I suggest we add reviews for Picks Of The Week

Just having 6 random songs there every week seems pretty useless. There's no indication of genre, or anything.

Maybe we could somehow use this forum so that it operates like Forced Listening? People apply to review a Pick Of The Week, then suggest another song. That song would then be a Pick Of The Week for next week, and then someone else would review and suggest a new song, yadda yadda.....

Of course, all the reviews would be added to Sputnik. Maybe a Pick Of The Week feature, with links to the old ones.

It might get a little complicated, but it could work.

Yeah, I understand the limitations of the current system. However, right now on Sputnik I see a few main problems:

1) Nothing new is really getting reviewed
2) A lot of 'classics' such as Lateralus get bumped to the top - most people have already heard this, heard everything about it pretty much. It's really hard to find 'New Music' that's not universally accepted as being great yet. I mean, it would be hard to come up with any cds on the charts that are news to anyone.

I'm open to further suggestions

I suppose I could add single song reviews... a lot of the time I am not motivated to review an entire album

I think the individual song idea is good, but you would need to make clear that these aren't just like..one sentence reviews. I can see a lot of spam reviews happening, but other than that, I really like that idea. I would definitely do a few. :thumb:

When you say nothing new is getting reviewed, do you mean new releases, or just that people aren't adding new reviews?

I'm gonna start reviewing albums again, though probably not as regularly as I once did. I'm not as snowed under with work now that I've got a couple of exams out of the way.

Both =)

I was afraid of that.

More people need to know about the site.

Do you think thats the issue? The link is posted on mxtabs. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the way I am presenting things...

Iai

Well, I wouldn't have expected there to be a direct cross-over between people who want to get tabs, and people who want to write album reviews. :)

It'd be better to get the word out on sites that have album reviews. Even if it's a site like Pitchfork - I bet a lot of people who read it think they could do better.

I really like the site, and I use it when I would like to check out an album, but I really don't ever have a desperate need to look there. I doubt it's a problem with the presentation of it...The reviews are good, and everything...Maybe I should make it a point to check out Sputnik more often. I'll do my part. :p

Sweet. Thanks :thumb: So, while you're in this thread, do you think you could do a name change for me? I asked DBJ, but he missed my post, or hasn't seen it yet. Dr. Jake Destructo is what I would like it to be. If not, then that's cool, but it would be nice. :)

Anyways, I'm off to do a track review!

/skips away to Sputnik

EDIT:

/stops skipping and has a good laugh at himself. :p

Thanks for the name change, if it was you. :ungayhug:

I would like a bit of a clarification (if someone else can answer this, that would be great) when it comes to these "track reviews."

In my reviews, I review track-by-track with a decent-sized paragraph for each song. Is this the same format you're referring to, or are they going to be more like the Forced Listening threads, where the review is a bit more extensive? And where would these track reviews take place, on their respective genre pages, or on the band/album pages, or what?

Sorry for such a lame question, but I guess I don't understand how the track reviews are going to be implemented to Sputnik and how this is going to affect the album reviews.

Hey, my thread got stickied. Awesome.

Most of the Forced Listening I've seen has just been a decent sized paragraph anyway.

I know alot of people were disgusted with the site and don't post on it. (Zappa.)

What is there to be disgusted about? I really want to make it good, and I'm open to changes =)

Okay, thanks, Iai.

But how is this going to be implemented to Sputnik?

I would have thought it'd just be a click-through to a track review where we now have the Picks Of The Week on the main page.

Then on the band pages, there could be two seperate sections - one for albums, one for tracks.

Just speculating, of course.

Zappa's main problem was that Jazz wasn't considered a main genre.

Also in my opinion, the comments for the reviews could use some editting. They seem to bland in comparsion to the rest of the site.

Also the charts, like you've said could use some editting. Since only classic albums everyone knows about are at the top. Maybe change it so it puts the most viewed album for the week at the top?

Ah, very well. Thanks for taking the time to answer me.

So the album reviews' format will stay the same and won't become obsolete, and the track reviews will have their own section on the band page and be separate from the album reviews. Awesome

Agreed with the comments.. there's a lot to do.

Unfortunately, I am on vacation starting Monday for a bit. So some of this will have to wait.

Comments should look slightly better now

OK, so all the basic programming is in (but not up on the site)

However, should there be comments for track reviews, or should they be standalone?

Jom

Standalone, but have the "Did you find this track review helpful?" implemented, I guess.

I still am not understanding why we need track reviews now, though :(

I recently (today) reviewed a new album; Adrian Belew - Side One and thats new, so I suppose that would be a good choice.

Track reviews are a good idea, but I still prefer to both write and read full ones.

I notice with the new site that there are a lack of comments, back when it was on the forum it seemed like people commented alot more. The discussion seems to have dissipated from all but the major album reviews, or maybe it's just me.

don't put comments on track reviews, a comment on a track review is just too petty.

I don't really think track reviews will take off- you read anm album review to see if you want the album, but hardly anybody buys singles/single songs anymore.

A number of the track reviews I have read have been abysmal. Now grant it, there have been some phenomenal ones, but there are a fair share of horrible ones as well.
