Why why would anyone pay for online play. I have never and will never do it. It might stop if people would do the same. But im not asking for a boycott, but why would you pay 50-60 dollars to then pay 10-25 dollars a month for online??
do you pay to play?

I was going to buy Star Wars Galaxies, but its mandatory to pay for it, which is stupid.
Its why i dont understand people who pay for XBL, when most of the games you can get on pc and dont have to pay for.

You pay online games because the designers are constantly working on the game, it's a work in progress. They have to get paid some how. The servers for some of the larger MMORPG's cost up to 30 million dollars a MONTH.

$12,000,000 income per month.
$30,000,000 for servers alone.
Still not factoring in paying employees, paying for advertising, and lots of other things.

CS doesn't use the same kind of servers. Players make their own servers on one master server, unlike MMO's, which players are assigned to one of many servers and play there only.

hhmm you think it will ever change?

Because online games when you pay for them generally have extremely better service that an none-payed for game. I assume we're talking MMO's since that's generally the recurring subscription.

With games like Counter-Strike people create their own dedicated server to hold about 16 people. With MMORPGs the makers of the game have to bear the massive costs of running servers to hold thousands of people simultaneously. You can't have an MMORPG without monthly fees.

I love the way Guild Wars was designed. You buy the game, with the original contents, then buy expansions later. They don't require expansions to keep playing, its just you have acces to new areas. Plus, even with NO monthly fee they do live streaming.

yeah, I do have to say....guild wars does look pretty freaking sweet. I wonder if they'll be able to withstand all the customers they're gonna get, because this game is pretty notorious. Especially with the free aspect part of the game, I'm sure it's gonna sell out.

-List of reasons why we should pay to play online games-
These people work their asses off to put out a game, and they deserve the money (if the game is good.) The working hours for game developers are some of the highest in the country, especially for the money they recieve. They are a few steps above China-esque labor for the amount of hours they work over how much they make. Personally, if the finished product kicks ***, I'm willing to pay for it.
Server costs. Do you have any idea how much it costs to run servers? A hella-lotta money. This is actually the main reason. And the reason Counter-Strike is free is because it's run by public servers, as in individual gamers, not businesses. Some people run 'liberated' servers or something like that for games like WoW that are free. All the other servers are run by Blizzard.
Generally, if you pay for something, it's going to have a lot more features/support/be generally better than free stuff, like XBL vs XBC (I'm not against XBC by the way, I just don't feel like hooking up all that crap and not being able to play with my XBL friends. I had to screw around with enough stuff on my router for XBL)
Of course, there are exceptions. If the game sucks, don't buy it. But I am personally against downloading games that are still in production. the only reason I download SNES and NES ROMs is because you can't find those games anymore, and the original developer makes no money if you buy it on ebay or at eb games. Well, that's my rant.
Edit: I didn't steal any of your ideas, I pretty much wrote this after I read the first post (i.e. I didn't read people that said my reasons before me)

Well, Guild Wars tottaly blew away all your logic by keeping the customers happy (free gameplay) and offering a stable, and fun game to play.

w00 to my first post in the pit...
The valve servers do a WHOLE lot less work than an MMORPG server does. AFAIK, they are basicly update servers, not play servers. Even if they were play servers, they require about the resources of a decent home computer to run, and enough bandwidth for about 16 people at a time. A MMORPG server must host thousands of players at once, over a massive amount of content, have the bandwidth to accomadate this, and remain running 24/7. Most MMORPGs have many of these servers running. MMORPG hosting and FPS/Strategy hosting are entirely diffrent beasts. Most FPS/strategy servers are run by individuals or other groups, not by the company that makes the server. I am not really sure how guild wars gets away without a monthly fee, TBH, they probably have some alternative source of income, unless they plan on keeping it up sheerly thorugh the sale of expansions.
