All my friends that have this game say it's awesome, but in order to play it I'll have to buy more RAM for my computer, buy a video card, plus any other sys reqs I missed..
So, are all the upgrades (probably around $75 total) and the $50+$15-a-month game worth it?

Have you tried it? You might want to try it out to see if you like it and if it will be worth the money.

if you are into that style of gaming, I would probably venture to say it's one of the best of it's genre, next to EQ
and Jack...you don't know what you're talking about.

I'm wondering the same thing if I should buy it.
I bought Guild Wars and disliked it. ALOT.
I had been playing Everquest2 and then played Guild Wars.
Maybe I set the bar to high but still.

no there is no single player in WoW.
But you pay extra for the service and content they develop. While I agree it's a little lacking right now, you're paying for a game that won't end. They have a team developing new stuff all the time.

Can someone explain to me how this game works and what it's like? I hear so much about it but I actually know nothing. I play quite a bit of Warcraft/Starcraft games, is it similar to those? Or is it a FFXI type of thing?

I haven't played it, but I know it's an internet only RPG. Not a RTS game like Warcraft/Starcraft, so yes like FFXI.

I've played this game, and other online mmorpgs, and it just isn't all it's cracked up to be, the gameplay is okay, no new innovations (that I could see). I just can't find anyting special about this game other than it's outrageously high online costs.

No no and no
My friend had played WoW for about 4 months and got a few characters to the max level which is 60. He now sold his account for $300AU and regrets wasting time on the game. The $300 went towards a new flatscreen monitor.
Bastard.
I played and after about 2 months I got bored. The game just offers no high end content. I'd seriously doubt going with it. Go with EQ

on average, how much per day do you guys play WOW and/or other online mmorpg's? I've been interested in Star Wars Galaxies, but I'm not a huge gamer because I don't play a lot, and plus I have school coming up in 2 weeks, so not much time to dedicate.
What do you think?

Far too expensive overall. The monthly fees are too high.
All folks I know that play it are always like "Gotta play WoW, what am I paying all the fees for?" They just play it all the time because they pay for it

Stupidest thing I've ever heard. If you didn't pay for it then it would never be upgraded. You're paying for the extra content being added and (excellent) customer support. It is only £9 for Christ's sake and unless you're 13 that isn't really a stretch to pay per month (just over £2 a week).
...it just isn't all it's cracked up to be, the gameplay is okay, no new innovations (that I could see). I just can't find anyting special about this game other than it's outrageously high online costs.
That's the beauty of Blizzard. Warcraft 3 wasn't innovative in any way but it is hailed as one of the greatest RTS' ever created. Blizzard excel in polishing and streamlining existing ideas.
I played and after about 2 months I got bored. The game just offers no high end content...
What do you expect from a game that is relatively new compared to most of the MMORPGS on the market. They clearly had to shift their efforts on to lower end content for release because most peolpe would be lower levels. Makes sense. But now there is a lot of higher level content being added (BattleGrounds / Honour System etc.).
To summarise; I would recommend trying it out for a bit to see if you like it (start a new character, don't play on one of you're friends'). But if you like MMORPGS, WoW is far and away the best. kthxbye!

You create a character, orch/elf/gnome/human/squirrel/orch-human hybrid/whatever, and then you start running around in the big world slaying plants and flowers. As you slay, you gain experience and grow stronger. Soon you can move on to slaying bugs and toads. You grow stronger and stronger, and can tackle harder creatures. So you run around there, slayin' them mutant snails all day, finding new items to wear, getting killed by high lever players, slayin' some more snails. After that, you can slay some more snails, and, if you've played enough hours and found enough gold to afford that special "Super Duper Mega Slaughter Mitten of Ultimate Snail Slaying" that you've wanted for so long, maybe even kill yourself a little newbie.
Repeat process, and there's pretty much the game for ya.

It is a great game, but it's not worth the amount of money.

If you don't mind paying the fees at all online, I would get it. If you don't wanna dish out the extra cash, then don't get it. Personally I think it's worth every penny, I have a lot of fun on that game and I never run out of things to do. Then again, I'm a casual gamer and not a power gamer. If you are a powergamer, stick to EQII or FFXI, if you just casually game, go with WoW. Best advice I can give.

yes, private servers

yeah, free servers are fun, they jack up the rates on some of the servers. So you lvl up like 10x faster and find like 10x money on each kill and 10x more the loot, it's pretty badass. I play Lineage II on cracked servers because of the jacked up rates.

It sounds like you need a new computer.
If you have the means then I would get it, it's a great game. Should probably try it before you buy it though.

not anything like Final Fantasy. I guess if you mean if it deals with magic yes, but it's mostly a pvp-based game.
Please don't get it.
Guild Wars sounds like a much better deal.

Yeah, Guild Wars is more my style. WoW looks really bad (the graphics). Guild Wars seems to have a much cleaner look to it. And the Character are more Anime looking (thats what I like about it).

Ah, we tried that when it came out back last year/early this year, but never got enough people to participate. Have you guys set up your own server, or do you play on a 'liberated one' on the net?

YES! GET IT! This game is brilliant. I bought it about a month ago and it has been incredibly addicting and fun. Well worth the money.
