We all know about the Bartman ball, and the goat curse, so in a few years it will be 100 years since they won the world series last. Will they in the next 4 years? or ever again?

If they can improve their offense and bullpen, they should.

I hope they never win. Right now their offense is too inconsistant because they can't manufacture runs. Also they don't really have a bullpen stopper, and have had problems with Prior and injuries. Also, Maddux isn't going to last forever, and I'm not sure the status of their fifth starter. They have too many question marks as of now. Who is replacing Sosa and Alou? I haven't really looked.
edit: I just checked, Burnitz and Hairston will be a big blow to absorb for Sosa and Alou. Burnitz's 2004 stats look good, but how much of that can be attributed to the thin air of Colorado?

I loved Hairston when he was here in Baltimore, but he nor Burnitz can even compare to the production that came from Alou and Sosa. He may not have had the greatest attitude, but Sosa still produced on the field. I can't see the Cubs getting close for a few years, especially when they have to compete with the Cardinals and Astros.

The Wood/Prior duo is tough to beat. They need to start closing games up, because too many times in the past couple of seasons they've seen their leads mopped up in the 8th and 9th.

The offense is gonna be ok (Lee,Ramirez,Garciaparra,Burnitz) and the pen should get them by but right now they need starting pitching, Wood and Prior are out again.

The Bartman ball is named for this dude Steve Bartman, and in game 6 of the NLCS, the Cubs were playing I think Florida, and had a healthy lead of 2 or 3 runs if I remember right. Either way, the minutiae isn't important, but if the Cubs won this game they were going to the world series. In the late game (7th inning?) a deep foul fly ball went to left field, where Moisses Alou was most likely going to grab it, but instead Bartman (spectator/fan) grabbed it out of the dude's glove. The momentum in the game shifted, and then Florida won in game 7. They also beat the Yankees in the WS.
The goat thing was because way back in the day some dude wanted to take a goat into Wrigley (don't destroy me if I confused the name of the field), but they wouldn't let him. He retaliated by cursing the cubs and saying they'll never again win a world series. So far, he's on the money. Cubs have brought a goat into the park 6 times since then thinking it would reverse the curse, and they're 5/6 when the bring the goat. That one time that it didn't work? The Steve Bartman game, ironically.
Hope that clears things up. And just google things in the future, for ****'s sake, I only bothered to type it because its a cool sports myth, the curse of the cubs.

^^ good explanation but I agree, google it, there's a ton of info on it online, and TV shows too. It's a great story, which is sadly true.
The Bartman incident happened with one out in the 8th inning -- Cubs were 5 outs from their first World Series appearance since 1945 (they haven't won it since 1908).

^^ the Bartman ball is just an excuse for the Cubs' futility. If Gonzalez wouldn't have booted the next ball after the Bartman ball the cubs may have been in the world series. Knowing the Cubs, fan since 94, they would have sucked dog nut in the series anyway.

I agree--it wasn't Bartman's fault. Yes he was a douchebag because any true fan would give the dude a chance to catch the ball (many outfielders tend to throw the fouls back into the stands anyway), but still you have to consider: first of all, there was still time to win that game, and even if you want to argue that the momentum shifted so drastically because the cubs lost faith in themselves and felt cursed, THERE WAS A GAME 7! Even some of the Cubs players from that team admitted that it was the player's fault and not Bartman's. I think the real curse of the Cubs is that whenever they go anywher in the playoffs, they think they're cursed and get all self-defeating for no reason.

^ yeah i was watching this thing on ESPN yesterday, and they had this thing on the cubs, and they interviewed like 10 people who were sitting next to him, half said they were going for the ball also, and would have done the same thing, but could have Alou caught it.

Well, he's there now... awkard as it may seem.
And speaking of the Cub's curse, (though I'm sure most of you heard this already), how about friggin Garciaparra saying bye bye for 3/4 months on the groin injury? Do you Chicago fans have ANY good luck at all?!

cubs just need to quit being such pussies, they get injured too much
our offense is great, we have one of the best line ups in the mlb but our bullpen kills us eeeevery single time....latroy needs to start pulling his wait and we need to get borowski back
i'm confident in my team we'll win in the next four years

Thank god he's gone -- underproducing and a terrible fielder, who was a distraction off the field, and in the clubhouse. good riddance...we had some great years with him, but it was time to say goodbye. Granted, Burnitz isn't an on-field improvement, but he's still pretty darn good, and doesn't polarize his teamates or make big media stinks.
Nomar's having that surgery -- out for the yearski
LaTroy Hawkins has blown something like 10 out of 15 saves....it was fun booing him last Saturday, even if the game ended up sucking.

Exactly. Too many injuries and the pen sucks no matter who they put in it.
