View Full Version : Grand Magus, Hail!

Come one and come all, let me introduce you to the living wonder that is:
Grand Magus

Magus are a trio hailing from sunny Stockholm and consist of:
JB - Lead Vocals + Guitar
Fox - Backing vocals + bass
Trisse - Drums.

Genre: Essentially rock, but with a very heavy Blues influence

Releases: They have two full length releases under their belt, 2002's "Grand Magus" and 2004's "Monument" and a third, “Wolf’s Return”, planned for release this year.

Grand Magus: This is their debut, and best effort to date. On this album you have your conventional rock sound but with a heavy blues influence incorporated into it rather fantastically. The songs are of decent length, simple and just brilliant. Every song features fantastic riffage, contagious hooks, and clean, soaring vocals and great solos. There is seriously nothing you can dislike about this album.
This album has a very stripped down and raw sound, the overdubs themselves barely amounting to four or five in the entirety of the album.

Recommended Tracks:
Gauntlet (http://s29.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0DNDTXDCHITKD12NDCIWNQDCKR)
Legion (http://s24.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1FAMFA4PJZL9P0I9F0GAZVM73N)
Never Learned (http://s28.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0JVT289XC4HYS32LNWWG0A41DI)
Generator (http://s14.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0H70IEVBYL8K30WLFI9YHQEK3D)

Monument: This is their second effort, and whilst it doesn’t mach up to their debut it is by no means a bad album. It has the same basics as their S/T but it generally has a darker feel to it.
Also some of the songs tend towards an epic frame of mind, occasionally stretching up to nine/ten minutes.
The album also loses the raw feel of the first one, with the production being of better quality and with the addition of overdubs and so on.

Recommended Tracks:
Ulvaskall (Vargr) (http://s28.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2SJOK5J6VPZFN3PMP8XXV56Z7S)
Summer Solstice (http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=031P58221I3J63MB8WDABLC9NZ)

Food of the Gods (http://s51.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=32N6EWVYK3SWJ109FKJXR4O1RU)

I have both albums available over various IM programs if anyone would like them, also let me know when the links go down.

Enjoy :)

I got around to doing this thread to silence my doubters. I bet you thought you’d never see this :p

I love threads that incorporate the use of brain cells and require a lot of effort by the threadstarter to upload songs for us to listen to.

I am very sad that I missed this thread the first time around for some particular reason :(

EDIT: Oh, I think I know why... I was home for Spring Break during these days, and my connection at home was crapping out and I wanted to wait until I got back to uni, and I guess I forgot about them :-\

:chug: @ munky for the awesome thread

I don't mind this band, they've got great music. I don't really like the vocals though, I think their singer needs to have a really high pitched voice, instead of a low, angry voice.

I quite like his voice, though it is pretty deep.
I think it's just because it's so powerful.

From your description, I think I'll like them. I can give you my official reveiw/ opinion once I download those tracks. I'm pretty excited because if I do like them, and a new album is coming out this year... well lets just say I don't think I've ever bought an album with all new material the year it came out (unless you count The Who Then and Now).

EDIT: okay, right now I'm on Never Learned, and so far, I like it pretty well. The riffing is fantastic, but I find the vocalists voice a little annoying. I was dissapointed it wasn't as bluesy as I had previously thought. The singers voice sounds a little too metal for the type of music they play, but the guitarist is absolutely phenominal. Perhaps more to come later.

I don't know. It was almost finished in February, just some vocal work left, so hopefully it'll be out soon.
Then hopefully they'll tour again. I missed them last time, but I'm assured (by a reliable source) that they put on a phenomenal live show and the band are all really nice guys.

I almost had another demo, but the source I was downloading from went offline. Further searches on Limewire only turned up my own files :-/

Magus' 3rd album, Wolf's Return has been released, and I shall update my thread accordingly.
The entire album has a darker feel to it than than its predescors. The album also has more relation to doom in some places(as they are often labelled), but is by no means a doom record. It's pretty much a straight up metal record.
For some reason there also seems to be alot of filler tracks which are only a couple of minutes long. They hold the atmosphere of the album nicely, but are a bit useless other than that.
In general, the songs are alot longer and tend towards the epic side. THere's also a fair mix of slow and fast paced tracks.
Uh..The production is a bit better which is a result from their rising success. A few more styles are incorporated into this album; power metal and traditional folk influences.
I like the album alot, despite having only listened to it a few times. It's has most of the Magus elements present of the previous recordings, but is alot heavier.
Also, I think some people may find the vocals a bit less grating on this record.

Songs:
Grand Magus - Kingslayer (http://s50.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2GWJZJJXAE1V12EQHSX50BNS13)(Their next single. A video for this song is in the works)

Grand Magus - Wolf's Return (http://s43.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0L0NRINT5AYPC2AFIF9MHKW1K8)

Grand Magus - Blood Oath (http://s48.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=296B43YYTDL7Z3LUSOXM5K49PY)

Grand Magus - Repay in Kind (http://s36.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=11FXMF3O67EKI2BSIINI8EVIZ7)

Grand Magus - Jarnbord (http://s28.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=035K834D3SU521CS36GOYY55DB)(One of the filler tracks, featuring the folk influences).
