It's actually highly likely now, unless my friend was lying.

I think Neil Peart writes the lyrics thinking they're going to sound cool, but he forgets that Geddy's voice automatically makes every word 58% funnier by default. This is why it's hard to take The Trees seriously.

Yeah, his voice does sound odd at times. Rush in Rio in particular.

Time Stand Still was off of 2112.
I love Rush, theyt're my fav band. Just watched Rush in Rio like 2 hours ago haha. There's rumours that my city is tryin to get them to play a concert here, and I hope we do.
Alex Lifeson is on of my fav guitarist's. He is so original. Neil Peart is the best drummer and Geddy has a nice voice and he's a really good bassist.
Wrong... Time stand still is on the "Hold your fire" album.
Me and my buddy together have each and every Rush album, he has most of them, but i got a few. Everyone here has basically covered Rush's excellentcy (I apologize if that is spelt wrong) so I'm not even going to bother.

Mike Portnoy basically stole Neil Peart's style. So in that sense you cannot say that Peart and Portnoy wish they were Bruford. Obviously Portnoy is an overrated Neil Peart knockoff. Never has one single drummer influenced so many other drummers than Neil Peart except maybe Buddy Rich. You also cannot say that Rush is self endulgant if you ever watch an interview of them they are some of the most modest people about their abilities. They know they're good and they know everyone else knows they're good so why brag? If you've never seen a Rush live show you should be dragged out and shot. They don't move around as much as many bands but they play every song perfectly and the light shows are amazing.

Ringo Starr was useless. Anyone could do what he did. In most of the songs he doesn't even actually hit a drum. Beatles are great notheless, obviously you don't listen to them for their drumming.

Geddy Lee is "Geddy" because his heavily Jewish mother could never say "Gary" correctly, and so it stuck.

It's considered one of the best bass performances of prog rock, so my guess is that it's fairly challenging. I know that Rush's lead guitar parts aren't too bad, until you start getting into the solos like La Villa Strangiato.
Give it a shot, see if you can do it. Doesn't hurt to try.

Alex does use "Lifeson" as his stage name. I guess no one wants to attempt to pronounce Zivojinovich. If I remember correctly, he is os Icelandic descent, and Zivojinovich roughly translates to English as "Son of Life", so thus Lifeson.
I like Lifeson better :) (prolly because I can pronounce it)

The main character is living in a futuristic Orwellian society in which the "Priests" have taken full control of the "Federation". They moniter everything about hte citizen's lives- artwork, music, and anything else creative is provided by the Priests themselves. The mian character, in ignorance, thinks he has a good life, until he finds an ancient guitar behind a private waterfall. He picks it up and plays it, and loves it.
When he presents it to the Priests, they scold him and crush the guitar. He comes to the sudden realization that life under them is not in fact life at all. In a dream, an oracle shows him the past when men had freewill and createive minds. Realizing he will never get to live free, he kills himself.
This is where the plot gets iffy to me. Something obviously happens after his death. When I listen to it, I conclude that friends/family find his body, and it spurrs a revolution. That's the only way I can explain the ending "Attention all planets of the Solar Federation, we have assumed control...." thing.

Cygnus X-1 Book 2 is one of my favourite songs ever. Such a fantastic story and lyrics...
Anybody know if Neil Peart wrote them all himself, or was it inspired by another piece of literature like 2112 and Xanadu?
I think Neil wrote that all himself. To be honest, I find the lyrical themes of "Hemispheres" to be rather weak.

If you're a Rush virgin and fancy getting into their stuff then it's probably best to start with the two Retrospective albums...they've got a good mix of tracks.
Subdivisions is one of my favourite tracks...but to be honest they've done too much good stuff to list. I've been listening to them since I was about 12. First album I heard was Fly by Night , Geddy Lee's vocals were so different to anything I'd ever heard that I was instantly hooked.
Personally I've not really been able to get into their newer stuff. I'd say Counterparts was the last album they did that I enjoyed. Perhaps it's just me...or maybe they've gone a bit off the boil? Interestingly when Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson released their solo albums I thought they were both great...perhaps they've started to stifle each others creativity within the band?
Perhaps someone could recommend a few of the tracks off Test for Echo and Vapour Trails.

But yea. Personally, I favor Hemispheres. It was the first Rush CD I got and has kinda stuck with me for a long time.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while but I went on a big non-Rush thing. Well I now have every studio album of theirs so I have a lot of Rush to listen to now!
But I am listening to Test For Echo and it's extremely good. Limbo is a great instrumental with Geddy's choir like singing in the back. Resist is a nice little song too.
I have noticed their newer stuff sounds more.. alternative less "rocky" feeling to them. (With the exception of Vapor Trails) Which I think was a good direction for them. What do you think about it? I perfer their more rockish ealier material. But maybe it will grow with time to me.

Yea, I would like to keep this thread alive, too, but I haven't heard anything off of Test for Echo.
I was in Virgin records in Union Square yesterday, with a gift card that "was supposed to" have fifty dollars on it. So, I brought two albums, Hemispheres and Yes' Fragile. As it turns out, the card had two bucks on it. Two! And I couldn't bring the albums back to hte shelves, becasue that would be humiliating. So I dug into my wallet, and spent all the money I had on me. Got home, realized all the rest of my cash is in the bank. I am now kinda broke.
At least they were worth it. Hemispheres is wonderful (it finally completes my collection of their late 70's albums) Cyngus X-1 book 2 is insanely good.

Hemispheres is an amazing album...there's an atmosphere to the whole album that is too difficult to put into words...it's one of those albums that you come back to time and time again and somehow it transports you back to the first time you heard it.

A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permenant Waves. That order.
But pretty much you can't go wrong with anything from '75-'81.

03-04-2006, 11:57 PM
Yeah, I enjoy their '75-'81 albums the best. The newer sound has attracted me all that much but I'm giving it a few chances to grow on me. Test For Echo is a pretty good album but nothing can compare to their earlier "rockier" material.
2112 is a fantastic album with not even one weak track.

Just a few questions about the (awesome) song 2112. I've always loved epic story-telling stuff like this, but I'm just confused about one thing.
I went to a lyrics site, and they have a prose paragraph for the "Overture" before "The meek shall inherit the Earth" that wasn't in the song. Was this in the album liner notes or whatever? The same for The Temples Of Syrinx" part, and all the other parts as far as I can tell. Just clear that up for me, as I'm sure that's just what it is.
Thanks :)

I find that is the best source of Classic Rock lyrics out there, it basically split up the different parts into seperate songs, and had a paragraph or two in quotations before the sung lyrics. Pretty interesting.

Probably Hemisphere's if you're in to 2112. I love Fly By Night...especially the last track In The End. Actually the reality is that I love everything they did up to and including the 1993 album Counterparts. If you listen to their albums in order there's this really nice progression in their sound and musical style...a steady evolution that gives each album it's own identity and sound.

Hemispheres has the same album format as 2112 (big epic title song and then a few others). I think that the songs on Hemispheres are overall better than the ones on 2112 but 2112 is better than Hemispheres the song.
On Hemispheres, what guitar effect is Alex using in all of those kickass rythm riffs? It sounds to me like a touch of phaser.

Hmm, yeah, soliloquy is very emotional and beautiful sounding. My only complaint with it is that there are noticeable mistakes which you don't see on any of their albums after 2112 but you see on nearly every album before it. 'kings was definitly the album where they mastered the studio.

Let's not forget about the title track and Cyngus X-1, which are also great songs, possibly better than Xanadu ftw. Cygnus X-1 Book 1: The Voyage is a fantastic song. I like it more than Book 2: Hemispheres. Hemispheres does have one of my favorite lyrical themes though. Neil Peart is a genius song writer and drummer. Books 1 & 2 are supposed to be related, but I have a hard time finding the relationship. In Book 1: The Voyage, the character flies his ship into the black hole called Cygnus. Then Book 2: Hemispheres is about the battle between Dionysus and Apollo. Cygnus brings balance between the two. I guess thats kind of a relationship.

so what is Xanadu about exactly? Xanadu is about a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Xanadu is the name of the summer capital for the ruler Kubla Khan who ruled over much of Asia. Xanadu was said to be such a splendid place, it (along with opium) inspired Samuel Coleridge to write a poem about it. It also became a metaphor for wealth.
I know I throw a reference to Xanadu into a song every chance I get :D

i used to love listening to 2112 (the song) well i suppose i still do, but one day i was surfing the net when i found an interesting topic on what the song truely ment... and one guy said that it was a metaphor for how kids are rebelious against parents and such.... and in the story the preasts of the temples of syrinx are the parents, and the narrator is the child who just wants to be freed from the slave life braught forth by the parents.... and it goes on and on and more in depth breaking down every line..... but after reading htat i never looked at the song hte same way again

I always looked at it from a more politcal standpoint, the whole Orwellian concept of a false utopia being controlled by the few. The familial veiw seems a bit ridiculous to me.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure 2112 is just an awesome Orwellian song about oppression of the arts and whatnot. Of course there's always the controversy about what the end of the song actually means... it's not very clear at all.
Well, after ODing on 2112 I finally got Moving Pictures. I actually was kind of disappointed at first, but it's grown on me, especially YYZ (I've listened to it like 8 times today). I like the live version better (I saw it on Google Video), although I like having the constant backing synth in studio, plus that glass breaking noise is sweet :D I would love to be able to play that song live someday :) Does anyone know what the title means? I remember when I first heard it I thought of the "super-males" (men with the chromosomes XYY or YYX because of a rare accidental triple combination of sex cells at conception), but that's obviously not it.

YYZ is an ode to Toronto, something to do with an airport code. The rhythm of the main riff mimics the morse code...

I don't see why you would be disappointed at first. The first 4 songs are all top-notch. By the way, if you like 2112, listen to Hemispheres.

I really enjoy The Camera Eye and Vital Signs, and I don't see what everyone's problem with the second part of that album is. Sure, Witch Hunt is kind of a lacking track, but the two I mentioned are great.

I guess I got kind of an 80's vibe off it at first, and I can't stand most 80's music. I don't know why, I really can't. After listening to it a few times I got that out of my system though. Tom Sawyer's is kind of overrated I think though. It's a good song, but it always tops Rush's Best lists and whatnot. It's pretty standard IMO. I love Red Barchetta, the lyrics remind me of HL:2 and other Orwellian-type stuff. YYZ is obviously awesome. Limelight is pretty sweet, same with The Camera Eye, I like Witch Hunt pretty well, and Vital Signs is pretty good too. I'd have to go with YYZ for my favorite ATM though. I definitely plan to pick up their other 70's material, I had heard good things about Moving Pictures so I decided to go ahead and pick it up.
Limelight has such a great melody. That would be my favorite on Moving Pictures.
So has anyone heard Presto? Is it any good? My essential Rush discography is complete and now i'm looking into the less popular albums.

Yeah, Its not bad. I think thats the one with Marathon on it, isn't it?? I had the entire discography until my hard drive crashed. Now I really need to start collecting the cds.
That new DVD set is going to ****ing rock, I love Grace Under Pressure and those other two concerts are going to kick. I mean Rush in the 80's, how cool is that??
I've seen the new DVD set. Looks pretty sweet. If they didn't have so damn many other DVDs, i'd buy it.

The DVDs are awesome, I got them the day they came out. It was only 27 bucks for 3 DVDs and 1 CD.

Rush replay x3 isnt coming out here until the 19th :(
preordered though
I could get it at best buy. But i'm considering all of my options for a Rush DVD. Probably Rush in Rio is the best choice. Anyone have any suggestions?

Rush In Rio probably has the best set list but the worst quality in my opinion. I think that R30 is better. A lot of songs were cut from R30, so the set list is shorter, but there are some awesome extras. The new one, Replay, is also better then Rush In Rio. RiR is good, but probably the worst of their live DVDs.

I dont see the problem with Rush in Rio quality to be honest, its not amazing but I see alot of people giving it really bad reviews because of it, which sucks. YYZ on RiR is absolutely amazing

Yeah, I don't think RiR is terrible, just the worst of their live DVDs. I still enjoy it quite a bit.

Mmm... interesting. I'd have never believed that some Rush members are friends with Alternative Rock Bands. :-0
Good news though. They haven't released anything new since Vapour trails, this should be interesting.
when did this 3 dvd box set come out, i saw it today and i was liek.... "wtf, i have to get it... but i have no money with me :( "

i have to wait another month for it here in the UK! raaaa
I've been thinking recently about this want to now what people think, Do you think Rush would be an even better band (i mean musically and relationships) if they wernt as underated or do you reckon that if they were more popular they would'nt be half as good a band as they are now?
I think that makes sense :S

I don't think they are underrated, at least not in the right music circles.
If you mean by the mainstream, they may not even be aware of their existence. Nonetheless, success of lack thereof isn't a factor in how much a band can get better. It can hinder their development musically, at most,.

Replay x3 is amazing! I cant wait for their new album, Neil Peart is saying that it is sounded very spiritual and that they have been recording in a different way. I'm having doubts on them touring early next year because of Alex's trial!

I'm hoping that they get out touring again, I really would like to see them in Toronto again. I saw them back on the R30 tour, and it was an incredible show. I'm really looking forward to seeing them again, if they tour again. My friend and I have already made plans to go when they come back.

I would love to see Rush myself, just started getting into them, what an amazing band. I saw a concert of them on tv the other day. I can't believe that Geddy can still sing like that.
Kenny_Fever
08-20-2006, 11:19 PM
Well Geddy definitely can't hit the high notes like he used to, but he's doing a lot better than I imagine a lot of people would have expected.
I think that his vocals got progressively better. But now I guess old age is taking a toll.

At Guitar Workshop in Toronto this year Alex Lifeson was one of the
special guests. I wanted to go really badly but I couldn't
Just got Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres in the mail. I've listened to AFTK and man is it awesome...haven't had a chance to dig Hemispheres yet though. I already know La Villa Strangiato is my favorite Rush song though.
I think these albums fill out my Rush collection pre-Moving Pictures, too. Except for the s/t.

Both of those albums are incredible. Possibly the two best that Rush has put out. I love the title track on AFTK.

I bought Replay X3 yesterday, and it's freakin' cool.
Seeing how their live show has progressed over time is interesting.
I think the whole thing on Grace Under Pressure with the "Put on your 3D glasses" was pretty cheesy, I got a real laugh out of it.

Yeah, I've hardly seen this thread. I still think Rush is one of the greatest band ever formed.

Those are probably my 2 favorite albums of theirs. But there's plenty of Rush left after that to enjoy.

It is so true.
My favs are:
All the worlds a stage and Exit, stage, left.
Bastille Day was like one of the first full songs i ever learnt :P
i can also play first 2 parts of 2112 (by ear though, not 100% correct) and The trees. Yeah, they are the ****.

Yeah, Exit... Stage Left has been one of my favorites for quite some time.
Go Trees! You can't help but root for the little maples.

I hope he keeps his vocals in the lower range, like the Feedback EP.
I hope that it's an album with one story song over 15 minutes and then a few other ones. That's their best album format.

I wish they would do that too. They also need to throw in the instrumental again. It's probably not going to happen, but we could dream.
They changed their sound. And as much as their old sound is better than their new one, I don't think that they personally want to do something like that again.

Favorite prog rock band along with Pink Floyd
Peart is god
Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and 2112 are the best to get
You can't have those without A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres. Those 5 together are the essential Rush albums.
