Yep. That's the one!

But no 2112 :( (it's actually ok because 2112 doesn't have too many extremly crazy guitar parts. There are some decent tabs on the internet too. Though discovery might be a bit hard without a perfect one).

Coheed and Cambria is a progressive pop-punk band. They have some really "out there" songs like The Crowing and 2113, but they also make really poppy three-minute songs for radio and MTV. They're not sellouts, that's just the range of what they like to write.

No, that sounds pretty ridiculous to me. I have a friend who's seen them live, seen live footage on MTV2, and they have a concert DVD out as well. Must be an awfully big conspiracy for all those people to pay money to see Coheed and then boo them, but cover up any memories or recordings of it!

I wouldn't even call them pop-punk. Their music is much too sophisticated for that. I hear the new album has some insane solos too. Their vocalist is absurdly high, however, and I find it very hard to listen to them sometimes.

I went to Rush's web site and started reading the news and this was there:

What a relief to be over this terrible ordeal and finally move on to better things. I felt completely violated for months after the incident at the Ritz Carlton in Naples, Florida, on New Year’s Eve 2003, but I was also comforted by the concern from so many Rush fans who wrote or called me, who know me and what sort of person I am, and for their many letters to the press in support of my family and me. I must admit, it was also uplifting to see the surprise from the police and the Ritz Carlton when so many let their outrage be known.

It was difficult to live in silence for 15 months, but now that we are pursuing a measure of accountability from those who beat, Tasered and jailed me without cause, I feel liberated and am ready to begin sharing the horror of that night and the ensuing 475 nights of fear and loathing. I have released a statement to the general press regarding my actions against the Ritz Carlton and the Collier County Sheriff’s Office that can be found on this site, and will hopefully begin to bring some clarity to the issue.

I sincerely want to thank you all for your amazing support. After so many wonderful years together, I am humbled by the depth of concern and affection that Rush fans have had for us through our most difficult times, and will never, ever forget it. Thank you with all my heart.

Alex Lifeson

I went to Rush's web site and started reading the news and this was there:

What's all that about?

Alex Lifeson was drunk at a New Years Party in Naples. His son, also heavily wasted, tried to get onstage with the club's house band and sing a song to his wife, and wouldn't leave when the bouncers tried to take him off, yelling "I'm singing a ****ing song for my wife." The cops tried to arrest him, and Alex went to his son's defense, yelling "It's ****ing New Year's Eve." Then the police tried to arrest Alex too and he got into a fight with the cops, supposedly hitting a female police officer in the face and shoving other cops down the club steps. The cops tasered both Alex and his son repeatedly and locked them up for the night. Charges along the lines of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace were going to be pressed but apparently it's blown over now.

No, but he was having the threat of maybe a year or two in jail if he was found guilty, and legal proceedings on the issue were continuing until recently. So that's what he meant by "a year and a half of fear and loathing."

Get 2112, right now. Some other good ones are: Permanentt Waves, A Farewell To Kings, and Moving Pictures, those are what I'd get to start out.

But 2112 is their best album IMO.

Distant Echoes
08-29-2005, 07:38 PM
The only ones you should buy are Test For Echo and Roll the Bones. Dispite their great singles on each, the albums aren't anything special.

Everybody will probably recommend you stuff from 70s-81 (Moving Pictures was in '81), and really it's your choice. They started as hard rock, sortta AC/DC-ish imo, and then started blending concept albums (or songs) into it, until they eventually became full progressive rock (right about at Permanent Waves '80). After Moving Pictures they have some good ones and bad ones, but they all sound somewhat alike.

I suggest any Rush fan to pick up Vapor Trails. Theres some obvious bad songs, but it has some really good ones too. It's not as progressive, and it's a bit heavier then all their material. I suggest it to my metal friends for their first Rush album and they love it.

Tom Sawyer is one Moving Pictures, and Dreamline is on Roll the Bones. in all probability, it was a greatest hits albums, or a mix he made up. Chronicles is a good greatest hits album, one of the very few i like, and theirs a few others with no need to mention. Both great songs.

And IMO, Id recommend Moving Pictures before anything.

After that, if you want to explore Rush some more (considering you love it), go for 2112. If you arent sure yet, try Permanent Waves.

Dude, anything Peart writes is great. I wish I had a percent of the talent he has at writing lyrics.

Actually I think that sometimes (particularly in the late Eighties and early Nineties) Peart's lyric-writing gets extremely hackneyed. Non-poetic and an incredibly odd emphasis on basic contrasts and metaphors permeate the lyrics of this period. "Cold Fire?" Wow, deep. I mean, sometimes his writing just seems a little more amateur than not. His best lyrics came out in the Permanent Waves-Grace Under Pressure period, IMO.

I prefer Bon Scott in AC/DC, i think his voices matched the attitude of the instruments, specifically guitars, better.

anyway...Geddy Lee's Voice I believe is very good, and regardless of if he sounds like a girl, you can't say he can't sing. Anybody with a higher voice doesn't mean they dont need to try to hit notes. Freewill is probably the best display, right after that wild guitar solo.

I believe any band that can cover freewill has amazing talent. The work displayed in that song is extraordinary.

Rush is an incredible band, musically and vocally. Lyrically, though, they are at best, above average(Fly by Night, Anthem, etc.) and at worst, brutally pretentious (the Trees. Gag). I think neil peart is an awesome drummer, but a bad writer. He tries to use too many ridiculous, clunky, metaphors. *Cough*Trees*cough*

I have that video. I believe that tour was right after Permanent Waves, being in the album they are all dressed in the suits they are on stage with, and the crowd doesnt erupt when hearing the intro notes. Its a good video, but obviously still experimenting with it - ending with a drum solo, which would soon become its own solo called 'the rhythm method', and eventually after some time O Baterista when peart gets many years and experience to restructure it. Thats one of the best video clips I have.

i also have one of them playing Spirit of Radio in that concert. Its another great one, maybe I'll upload it. Unfortunantly Alex missed the last note of the song and its pretty obvious....so every time i think of the video i cant help but think of that; it bothers me.

And yes, Rush Chronicles (video collection) is histerical. The effects are so tacky i cant stand it...like when their floating around the room . And all of Distant Early Warning is cheesy itself. Their are good songs on it; but I would never recommend it to anybody.

This makes absolutely no sense. You don't like their drumming being of "odd time"? How about you listen to the drums just for the sound of them instead of accessing every stupid little detail. Open your "feeble brain" and listen to how good the MUSIC sounds.

Oh yes, because Rush are a direct product of Canada . This is complete idiocy. The country that a band is from has absolutely nothing to do with a band's music.

Too many good bassists, guitarists, and drummers. *Face explodes*

What I love about rush is ALOT of their fans are musicians

Most of the time, anyways. It's definitly easier to respect them when you play music yourself.

What if they were all to write a song together? Would your nads explode?

Depends on who ends up playing it. It would have to be like this:

Rhythm bass: Steve Harris
Lead bass: Geddy Lee
Guitars: Petrucci, Lifeson, and Smith
Vocals: Bruce Dickinson
Drums: Everyone else, even the non-drummers

Then yes, I would face a severe testicular compromise. :upset:

Ha, sweet. Geddy and Steve Harris both playing at the same time. And I think that Lifeson and Smith will keep John Petrucci from doing one of those all out wank off solos, so it will all be coo.

Couldn't Bruce, Geddy and James LaBrie all sing, too? Vocal harmonies, trade offs between singing. All of that good stuff.

Also i'd let Jordan Rudess play keyboards, just because.

My nads explode each and every time I hear any of them.

If they were to right a song together, my testes would morph into a new lifeform... like a transformer.

:lightbulb: Or, maybe, just maybe if you could try really hard and open up your mind to look beyond the "nad crushing vocals" you may actually have something meaningful to say?

Sorry, dude, but Time Stand Still was on Presto, which is a very good album.
It was an honest mistake. I just can't bring myself to rip on a fellow Rush fan!

TRIVIA: did you know that all the effects and multiple parts (I.E., keyboard parts while Geddy is playing on bass, different guitar parts, etc.) are all triggered onstage by the band themselves? It does't sound like much unless you have seen their live show. There are about 5 parts playing simultaneously during Tom Sawyer alone! Gods among men....

You're both wrong... it's from Hold your Fire. Another great album from them released 4 years earlier.

I love Rush. I wanted to see them last summer but the cheapest tickets were $85. 3 days later I payed $21.50 and was pressed against the rail at a Velvet Revolver show. Woulda rather seen Rush...

Last time they came to my town, I couldn't afford tickets. I was watching TV that nigt and they showed a live clip of Rush playing Tom Sawyer, I almost threw up. Can't believe I missed them.

I used to like rush until Geddy lee said he didn't think canada would exist in 2112 in a interview, which i thought was a racist comment

The canadians are now a race of their own? Are you a ****ing idiot?

You don't like Canada (care to justify that?) but you do like Quebec?

Hypocrisy runs rampant.
