I'm seeing them on the 17th of this month.
I'm mainly going for the support.

It's time this thread turned up the doom.
Witchfinder General are reforming! But without Zeeb on Vox.
I heard that. Great news.
Jono: I was skeptical as well, but they're really good. The technicality isn't in "dwee dee dee" style riffs. The riffs and drums are slightly more technical than most traditional doom. I would even say it's more trad doom than "technical doom"

So The Melvins are playing in my town next month, I don't really know a lot about them, but I guess I should go.
Downloading Houdini now, if I like it then i'll book tickets.
So the other day I found three more Solitude Aeturnus albums. I just finished Into the Depths of Sorrow, and it freaking owns!!1 I guess I shouldn't be so surprised, but I expected the albums other than BTCH and TTDH to be kind of meh.

I haven't heard the new one yet. I will get it at some point but I've heard mixed reviews.

I don't think Isole funeral doom at all. I think them as traditional, except they're what I like to call "new doom".
My Dying Bride and Swallow The Sun do it sometimes too...all 3 of the bands have moments where the tempo actually comes out of the ground, which I do like. It helps give the music new flair.
Funeral doom is pretty much doom on steroids. It's got all the elements of doom, except taken to the extreme: tempos are slowed to the point where they almost go backwards, and the vocals and lyrics are completely devoid of anything remotely happy.
I still can't get into FD that much. I think it drags on quite a bit...
I haven't tried any FD but I like traditional doom quite a bit. Cathedral and Saint Vitus ftw :-D

Classic doom obviously stands out for the use of clean vocals, while FD has more connections with death metal. Mostly in vocal style.
Growled or whispergrowl like vocals, though there are enough bands that use clean vocals too.
Normal doom focuses more on the heavy, doomy, gloomy sound, wile FD is more about the dark, heavy, inpenetrable 'despair' sound; the I want to kill myself sound.
It's quite hard to explain..
Obviously, FD is way slower than classic.
Also FD more often uses synths and layers more.
Funeral Doom is a genre largely full of ****, with the exception of Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet.
If you'd be a bit more open minded you'd see it isn't mostly ****. There's a lot of good stuff. With a view like that you're missing out on a lot.
For people wanting recommendations:
Make sure you've heard something similair before, cause this isn't easy listening music.
You need to have some clue on what to expect before you can appreciate this.
So some classic doom might be a good starter before even going in to FD.
Anyway good Funeral doom recommendations:
Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet (Pioneers of FD, highly recommended, very relaxing at tme and not as suffocating as some other FD)
Ahab -The Call Of The Wrteched Sea. (Newcomers in the genre, made a great album about Moby Dick, very good, atmopsheric stuff)
Thergothon - Stream From The Heavens (Also pioneers in the genre, too bad they only made obne album before calling it quits.)
Shape Of Despair - Angels Of Distress (Finnish funeral doom with female vocals as well. Insane and mourning atmosphere, recommended for synth lovers.)
Comatose Vigil - Not A Gleam Of Hope (Sick Russian FD, lots of synths once again, very eery and sick atmosphere.)

I'm listening to Below the sun for the third or fourth time now. I love this song, the drums about 9 minutes in are briliant. Haven't gotten past Old thunder yet, I keep going back when I start listening again.
It reminds me more of Black Metal then Death Metal, atmospheric wise.
I've been listening to a loooooot of Stoner Metal lately. High on Fire are so damn good.

No. Really no.
What doom have you even heard that sounds anything like Shape of Despair or whatever Funeral Slow Death Metal with Goffik Keyboards you youngsters listen to these days? I'm sorry but once again, I fail to see any link between Trouble, Vitus, Pentagram etc and these bands.
Anyway been in bed with an evil virus for a couple of days. My pain was eased considerably by the following: Trouble "Live at Stockholm" DVD, Pentagram "Be Forewarned", Place of Skulls "The Black is Never Far", While Heaven Wept "Chapter 1", Dreaming "II".

In my context, something on steroids is something that's taken to the extreme. Which funeral doom is. It's got the elements of normal doom, but everything is taken to an extreme level.

I've been starting to get into the stoner metal genre, alittle doom also. Kyuss right now is my favorite, because I haven't found anyone else that sounds as positive as them in a stoner metal band, I understand that doom metal isn't supposed to really sound positve hence the "doom".The only other bands I've checked out so far have been Sleep, Cathedral, Orange Goblin, and alittle bit of Trouble. I like the music and everythign but I do wish there was more of a variaty in the songs.

Tranquil like the Sinking Belle? Or just tranquily written doom?
the2stranger

Liek Sinking Belle, but more because of the very layered, synth driven riffs.
Monolithe is Funeral doom, so don't expect anything like that Boris track with clean female vox or anything.
Monolithe is great stuff though.
If I had to compare them I'dd say, Shape Of Despair comes pretty close, with hypnotic and synth layered ambiance, whilst not loosing power and the dark sound.

I'm listening to the the new Solitude Aeturnus now. I think it's going to be a grower - at the moment there are only two standout tracks but some of the melody lines from the other songs are starting to get under my skin so who knows? Maybe it'll be my favourite SA album in a couple of months.
