Khanate is one of the most amazing bands I've ever heard.
I love Stoner Metal from what I've heard of it. I'm in love with Electric Wizard.
No, they aren't doom...
Swallow The Sun isn't doom? Then what are they?

Slow atmospheric death metal with keyboards.
Show me the link with Pentagram and St Vitus and maybe I'll accept that they're doom metal

Saint Vitus is classic doom.
Swallow The Sun is death/doom, Draconian is gothic doom, etc.
Different branches is all.

No. St Vitus is Doom Metal.
I understand subgenres. I know that black/death is death metal with elements of black metal. But surely by that reasoning death doom should sound a teansy weany bit like doom metal?
Put it this way. Most people accept that Pentagram were the first doom metal band. In the same way that most people accept that Death (or Possessed) were the first death metal band. You can trace a lineage from Scream Bloody Gore to say Behemoth or even Swallow the Sun. But there is not one element of Pentagram or Vitus, or Trouble, or any other Doom Metal band in Swallow the Sun.
Usually I let this go (see early pages for similar arguements) - it's just you were pulling someone up on genres and then getting it wrong yourself.
Anyway Type O are a lot more doom than Draconian!

I suppose every music review site has the genres wrong then.

That's just a cop out man.
Call em doom death if you want but try and explain why they should be called that. The fact remains that they have nothing to do with doom. The name doom death just came about to describe Paradise Lost because they were doing really slow death metal and people didn't understand it. they never sounded like doom at all. But people equate slow with doom. Which in itself is bollocks. There's loads of uptempo doom.

Doomsword are godly, I have Let Battle Commence and I love every second of it. They're so damn epic, like a mix between Viking and Doom Metal.
I have yet to find a band that sounds like them dammit! Scald (\m/) are somewhat close though.
I've never heard of Scald, if they sound like Doomsword I should check them out.

I fail to understand how Paradise Lost's Gothic doesn't sound doom at all. Just listen to the riffs. And it's not very slow at all.
And for the record, I'd call that 'doom' before I call any of the trad stuff doom. I've never got how Sabbath-imitating 70's rockers got called "doom metal". It's hardly metal, let alone doom. But that's my view.

Candlemass are an exception, being that instead of a retro rock band imitating Sabbath, they are a classic-ish metal band imitating Sabbath. Reverend Bizarre sound perfectly rock to me.
Seriously...I mean people call Witchcraft doom!
Of course I still call all of these bands Doom (except Witchcraft) out of habit and to save myself from the doom elitists out there.

You've lost the plot man. You really have. You can't start redefining music on the basis of how YOU think it should sound. For example, I've decided that [insert generic metalcore band here] are what I'd call thrash. Therefore Razor and Forbidden are no longer thrash. You see how ridiculous that sounds? Well that's exactly what you're doing.
And as for Reverend Bizarre not being metal? Madness

Off subject, but I love Boris :D
The only thing I don't like is how they can change so drastically with each album. I don't mind growing, but COMPLETELY changing the genre of their music (basically that's what they do), is kinda weird. Like, when I get comfortable with something, they change it again.
It can be cool sometimes, but it can also be bad if you ask me.

Stoner Metal is very sludgy and rarely faster than mid paced, so it's oft associated with Doom Metal.

Thanks man.
Also: Because I'd like to knw and because this thread could use a new sicussion impulse:
Does listening to (funeral/drone/stoner/sludge) doom influence your state of mind?
Do you get depressed by listening to it, or does it not affect you?
Or do you get affected in some other way, like get happy (eg Stoner music)
My answer:
I'm not really affected by the music I listen to, I listen a lot of Funeral Doom, one of the most depresing genres I could think off. But I dn't get :( because of listening to this genre. Same with any other 'slow' genre. Stoner makes me relaxed and layed back ( I don't smoke while listening to it, but still).
How about you guys?
Nepenthe
09-22-2006, 09:09 AM
Nah, it doesn't really affect the mood I'm in. It can bring me from upset to happy though, just not the other way around. I remember the first time I heard Thergothon, it put me in such a good mood because it was so good, haha. Usually with Doom, it just puts me in, like you said, somewhat of a relaxed state. It never actually makes me depressed, but I can still enjoy the beauty of it's depression.

Nah, the only music that affects me is Black Metal, only certain bands.
Like Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God, Wolves In The Throne Room - Diadem Of 12 Stars, and Leviathan - The Tenth Sublevel Of Suicide.
And Sigur Ros - ( ), but that's not really Black Metal :p
Do any of you listen to Giant Squid?

As far as I know, they have only one album, and that's Metridium Field.
It's extremely good though, check out the songs Neonate, Summit, and Revolution In The Water. Neonate is my favorite though, the riff in the song is so awesome, I have it stuck in my head forever after I listen to it :p

KHANATE Calls It Quits - Sep. 24, 2006
"Extreme doom" metal band KHANATE, the brainchild of Stephen O'Malley
(THORR'S HAMMER, BURNING WITCH, SUNN 0))), LOTUS EATERS) and James Plotkin
(OLD, SCORN, ATOMSMASHER), has disbanded. In a statement, Plotkin writes,
"I have decided to leave KHANATE due to the lack of commitment of certain
members. The decision was a difficult one, as I've put six years and
immeasurable amounts of creativity into the band hoping to take it as far
as possible. The past year has brought about many missed opportunities and
the realization that some players are more concerned with personal careers
and day jobs rather than the advancement of music as an artform.
"I will continue to work with drummer Tim Wyskida on a number of other
projects, mainly KHLYST and our improvisational duo.
"Gratitude to all those that have supported what we have done and
acknowledged our importance in modern music.
"The companion album to 'Capture & Release' is currently being mixed. This
yet untitled work consists of spontaneous recordings made during the 'C&R'
sessions dating back to February 2005. This will be my final work in
KHANATE. There are plans for Japanese issues of the self-titled and
'Things Viral' CDs with expanded packaging and bonus discs with unreleased
material."

Viva Emptiness is probably better because it's less produced and is more consistent throughout. I love that album so much. Plus, it's more unique, whereas TGCD basically just extended what they did on Viva Emptiness with better production.

Ah the riff :-\
Anyways, I don't think MagicalTroll's song is THAT similar to "Black Sabbath" except for the intro of course. It heavily reminds me of Electric Wizard.

I've been meaning to check out Electric Wizard.
Are Spirit Caravan worth getting? They have Wino so I assume it is pretty good but I still want an opinion.

How the hell can you not of heard Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath?!
Anyway - hear it now. The best riff ever written.
So, I pretty much wrote the best riff ever written, but Black Sabbath beat me to it?

Yea'.
If I was 'ripping off' anyone, I'd say it was Electric Wizard.
And my friend said my song sounded like Black Sabbath because of the rain behind the riff or something, so is that why it sounds so similiar to the BS song? Or is it just that the riff just really sounds like them? I don't really get it...
I'll download the song later I guess.

No the riff is not the same. Just the rain effect with the buzz I would say :) Hey guys, does anyone care to upload the song, I don't have the album anymore..

Ok, as long as the riff doesn't sound stolen, then whatever.
I just grabbed a sample from an At TheDrive In song, that's where the rain came from. I haven't heard alot of songs with rain in them, so I thought it'ds be cool to try.

I love Shape of Despair!
I have 'Angel of Distress' (user title :thumb: ) and i love it... beside that i have Illusion play and shape of despair - so their whole discograpyh!?
what are some other great funeral doom bands that are similar to Shape of Despair?
the thing i just love (i live on the 8th floor) is listening to doom (especially Anathema, My Dying Bride, Shape of Despair or some other great bands) and watching out of the window... whole vienna under my feet and you can see the main church of vienna in light... its so beautiful... wait i will make a photo for you (its already dark)

So I might be covering an Earth song for a concert at school...
I say "might" because I don't know if I'm in. I'm in with my band, but this is just going to be me with a clean guitar. I'll be in if there aren't too many bands auditioning. For the last song, I'll get my friend to back me up and we'll play Raiford (the felon wind) by Earth.

btw. i can't wait for winter (and autumn) ... its always the time when i listen a lot to doom metal bands like Anathema, Katatonia, My Dying Bride, etc.
it just began for me.... i haven't listen as much doom metal in the last few days as in the last half year before... its such a great feeling. on the one hand melancholy, on the other happiness... its strange.
ps.: don't forget about my post on the page before ;)

i never heard a single song by them - on the sunn O))) concert it was the first time i heard them and i expected something different...
for me they were progressive rock, not drone

Their newer stuff isn't very drone-like, except that it's slow. Their earlier albums are reputedly really groundbreaking in terms of it, thuogh.

ok, but don't be too harsh in critics ... its my first (real) text i wrote for a song, while i was listening to lacrimas profundere... but ok.... maybe you have some better ideas (in the sense of vocabulary) ;)
sitting on the beach, staring at the sinking sun.
all my fellows gone to the sea of forsaken.
the sand as uncomfortable as myself/my mood. (i'm not sure about this one)
the last actinism reaching me,
leaving a shadow of my shattered soul
chorus:
desire hope
desire fortune/luck (don't know which to take)
desire hate
desire love
desire acceptance
... all at once ... forever
darkness surrounds me in the nescience
ask myself ... will i ever reach the path to fulfillment?
in the black water i will find my answer.
in the deepness of knowledge of death
... i fail
... the world won't come back ... again.
Wow, great metaphor there. I like it. Really powerful.

^^ thanks
maybe some suggestions? some better words i could use? i'm not really happy with the chorus and as you can see its similar to Trent Reznors Eraser.
and i'm not sure if i can leave the following words (i took them from a dictionairy :p )
sea of forsaken?
actinism
nescience
in the deepness of knowledge of death (or maybe: in the deepness of the knowledge of death)
are the meanings of the words delivered? how i said, i took the german word i was searching for and searched in a dictionary...

NP: Novembre - Swim Seagull In The Sky
I've been listening to a lot of doom recently, to get in that mindset for my band's upcoming doom album.
I went through Grand Magus "Monument", Candlemass "Nightfall", Cathedral "The Ethereal Mirror" and "The Garden of Unearthly Delights", Solitude Aeturnus "Beyond the Crimson Horizon" and Black Sabbath "Vol. 4" twice.
