Is this Tom no longer singing?
It's funny really, because he's a great, great singer but doesn't seem to like singing! Firstly he pulled out of doing Solstice and now WHW. This is pure speculation on my part but I wonder whether it stems from a gig they did in Belgium in 2003. Basically, Tom had some issues (I'm guessing women issues) and got steaming drunk, and I mean properly hammered, and had (unsurprisingly) a terrible gig. I don't think he managed to sing a full line himself - Frank from Mourning Beloveth/Old Season got up and did most of the gig for him.
I don't think they've played live since - but I may be wrong.
All the same I think it's a great shame. the new guy is a great singer but Tom's voice is part of WHW for me.
Nostalgia

They actually had a gig in New York at Born Too Late festival. It was funny, a few months before the fest came up he announced Rain would be taking over, and considering the festival was planned like 8 months ahead of time I still thought Tom would sing it (considering the fact they haven't preformed in years, Tom could have at least gave all his dedicated fans the privilege of seein him preform one last time) but Rain actually had did vocals for the live festival.
A real shame.

Get Chapter 1. Empires is good but it's more symphonic and not Tom's best vocal work - Chapter 1 is a summary of all their early material and perhaps is the best album in doom metal. Seriously, La Mort D'amour has some of the best lyrics, as does The Mourning. Both are my favorite songs.

The Furthest Shore starts off as power metal, but it definitely becomes more 'traditional' as it goes on. It's 15 minutes long, so it definitely switches gears.

Okay, so there's While Heaven Wept's Chapter 1 compilation. If you guys are fans of OEF you may or may not like this, considering the fact OEF (and Vast Oceans, for that matter) took a much different approach than their earlier doom material did. I can't really compare the album to anything else, the band really has their own sound. This is definitely my favorite metal album, and in the doom genre as a whole I'd consider it up there with classics such as Nightfall and Epicus. I'll add some descriptions my very favorite songs:
Thus With a Kiss I die - This song is kinda strange, the first 8 minutes or so are in traditional WHW style - slow, doomy, but the vocals are so enunciated and powerful it sounds like a power metal ballad over a Warning track. Seriously. Overall, this song isn't my favorite, as towards the end it dives off into a 7 minute guitar session. Entertaining, yeah, but not really captivating.
The Death of Love - Okay, all of WHW'S material is written in mourning of Tom's ex-girlfriend (if you want more info on this, he explains what exactly happened on their official site) and their sour, depressing relationship. Anyway, it's important if you're a lyric guy to read along with this song - Tom wrote it at his parents' kitchen table, but nonetheless it's still a masterpiece. This was his electric version of the song, the first one they did was completely acoustic and even better, but thankfully it's on this compilation as well (under La Mort D'amour, which is french for the death of love).
The Mourning - This song totally tricked me. It starts off as a total thrasher - blasts, heavy bass, and an awesome main riff. As it progresses it slows down and rekindles the doominess of the earlier songs, but the really notable difference is the vocals. They're clean, yeah, but low pitched and very commanding. It's hard to explain the exact tone, you have to hear it. This was definitely their best attempt at writing as well. (if you're into poetry, all WHW lyrics take root in poets like Shelly and Byron, and if you read any of their writing you can see where Tom got a lot of his ideas from).
Shores of Desolation: Bassy chuga-chug riff in the intro. This is a pretty captivating song because it's nothing like the previous tracks - it's all growls, sometimes shrieky, and very short. I think they just wrote this to experiment a little bit, as they did a little bit on OEF, but istill it remains a WHW classic to me. Brilliant vocals.
That's all I'm gonna mention 'cause I'm tired of ****ing writing this even if i put no effort into it. the album is just totally perfect and there are a lot of other mentionable songs: some with neo-classical influence, thrash, '80s metal, everything. truly superb, so download it.

Saturday 24th
Tekhton: Sludgy stuff with Crowbar vocals. Irritated me a bit by pissing around with some stupid noisebox for what seemed like 3 and a half years. Had some interesting chord progressions but ultimately left me cold.
My Lament: My boat remained thoroughly unfloated by this band. One member was wearing a top hat and a frilly shirt. Unfortunately the top hat was not top enough - too small! If you're going to wear a silly hat you can't be half-hearted about it. It was still better than the music though
Unsilence: I thought it went reasonably well and we had some nice comments from people.
Process of Guilt: This sort of thing is not usually my sort of thing, but you know what? I liked em. Like most bands of this ilk they could easily cut out 3 minutes of each song and you wouldn't notice but apart from that they were pretty damn good. Reminded me a bit of Morgion.
Saturnalia Temple: Pretty cool spacey stuff. Great frontman.
the Prophecy: The Prophecy are actually quite good these days. There's more clean vocals and they play well live. The lyrics still tend to be a bit weepy but I quite enjoyed them.
Lord Vicar: LV were ace. Chritus is a legend on stage - crazy faces, crazy moves. Well worth checking out.
Sunday 25th
Fatum Elisum: Started off with a guy in a priest's oufit singing hymns on his own. Sounded quite promising but then went downhill into standard doom/death stuff. Still some nice clean vox bits.
Mose: sludgy stuff. Pretty cool actually.
sardonis: One guitarist and a drummer. Boring.
the 11th Hour/Spiritus Mortis/Erob Altar/Count Raven: Fantastic true doom bands. really like them all. Missed them all because I had to get the ferry. arse.

the only two i know enough to comment on are process of guilt and the prophecy, the former being good but still standard doom/death while the latter being really mediocre (have only heard the latest album though)
Too bad you missed SM and CR. At least you saw LV.
What did you guys thought of the Shrinebuilder album?

I was, but I forgot about this year. :(
I hope Roadburn has a good line up next year, cause that's also an awesome doom festival.

And Erob Altar who are ace. I was never that fussed by Lord Vicar on record but live they made perfect sense. You have to see the new record as well - Proper fancy! Hardback cover and all! Had a good nostalgic chat with Chritus as well - having said that he is a least 10-15 years older than me!
I bought the new Count Raven as well. I was a bit aprehensive as it's basically just Dan these days. But it's pretty good.

Nice.
Were you there last year?
No. To be honest I only went this year because I was playing! there tends to be a bit too much doom/death and sludge for my liking. I might make the trip next year though because it's a great venue and a good atmosphere. Rotterdam is a bit dead though - walked for an hour and a half trying to find a shop to buy cigarettes!
I was, but I forgot about this year. :(
You forgot?! You're almost as bad as me!!

I don't really like the vocals, which is weird since they remind me of Terry Jones, and I like him.

that's you on drums then! for some reason i was thinking you did the vocals, and i was about to say very lightly i think they could potentially be changed or taken down in the mix, but that your drummer is very good. but really i think the songs would be much better with heavier vocals. obviously this is just my opinion, it also turns off a lot of other listeners. the production is also good, nice reverb on the drums and the guitars all sound great.

If by heavier you mean death metal vocals then no way! One day I'll upload the "Shadows Cast in Stone" demo from 1994 which is all death metal vocals but I think those days are long gone for Unsilence.
His voice could be a bit rougher for my tastes (more Butch Balich than Chris Barnes though) but he's a damn good singer - spot on. Funny - we had a far inferior singer for 14 years and no one really said anything negative about the vocals!
Anyhow - thanks for the comments.

It's not really good though. It's not doom whatsoever, and that's what I liked about WHW. If you were a fan of OEF then yeah you'd probably like it, but that album is where their sound totally changed. My point is, you can compare this album to probably 50 power metal albums, but you couldn't compare any early material to any other band.

They've only released one album since this, so it'd be the same scenario if it was 20 years ago. I take WHW's music seriously (I know it's lol on this forum if an album emotionally captivates anyone) but their new album doesn't do anything for me. I know he's saying the "music is good" but I look for something more than just how it sounds. Like I said, I bet there's 50 albums that you can compare their sound too, thus rendering it pretty damn forgettable.
This is partly due to Tom leaving. Rain Irving didn't even write the lyrics, so him singing about all Tom's experiences/events seems stupid.
