Anybody into Virgin Black? They're a (very) symphonic doom band from Adelaide. I saw them support Opeth in Sydney last year and they gave them one hell of a run for their money.
I have an album of theirs called Requiem: Mezzo Forte. They released another one last year, but I haven't heard that one yet (apart from at the gig).

I saw them opening for Opeth too, they were okay. The album they released last year was decent, but they overdo the whole symphonic thing.

So I went tothis gig yesterday:
Officium Triste, Evoken, Mourning Beloveth, Isole, Longing For Dawn and Mournful Congregation.
I had to leave near the end of Evoken and missed Officium Triste.
But hey, I saw awesome bands.
Longing For Dawn was already playing when I entered the venue.
They played a song from heir new album I guess when I entered.
After that they played The End Of Laughter from their second album.
A very good live band, hadn't expected that.
The vocalist moved and headbanged in a strange way though.
Isole played an excellent show, better then the last show I saw of them.
Still, I'd like to see more power in the vocals.
Mournful Congregation:
Absolutely awesome.
They started with Mother - Water, the Great Sea Wept, of The Monad Of Creation, after that Suicide Choir from the new album and then a song of the demo: Suffer the Storms.
These guys were so awesome, one of the better funeral doom bands around.
AFter MC, Mourning Beloveth played
I'm not big fan of them, so I went out to eat during their time.
I saw the last song still when I returned.
It was ok, but too quick and agressive for my taste.
Evoken:
WOW. Powerfull, crushing, oppresive.
They played A Caress Of The Void and another from that album and two tracks from earlier albums, can't remmeber which ones.
And I had to leave after that. :(
I also bought a Mournful Congregation shirt, of The June Frost.
Awesome, awesome gig.

SUNN O))) is proud to present their 7th studio album, after 10 years of existence, entitled Monoliths & Dimensions. The album showcases the core guitar duo - Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson - incorporating influences from a plethora of guest musicians, bringing the SUNN O))) sound to epic new levels. The band also collaborated with composer Eyvind Kang (notable for his work with John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, etc.) on various acoustic ensembles, in addition to the Helios fueled electric guitars and basses. Key players on the album include Australian guitar genius Oren Ambarchi, enigmatic Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Tormentor, etc.) and slow music godfather Dylan Carlson (Earth), as well as Julian Priester (worked with Sun Ra in the 50s, John Coltrane's African Brass band, and Herbie Hancock's Sextant band) and new-music horn player Stuart Dempster. There's also an upright bass trio, French & English horns, harp & flute duo, piano, brass, reed & strings ensembles, and a Viennese woman's choir led by Persian vocal savant Jessika Kenney.

‘No Cure for the Lonely’ (Swans)
‘Dead Skin Mask’ (Slayer)
‘The Sun Always Shines on TV’ (A-Ha)
‘Needle in the Hay’ (Elliott Smith)

If you want to try some dark stuff Sunn O))) is the most obvious band to start on.
Another good one to start with Khanate (also with O'Malley from Sunn O))) )
For Sunn start with Black One, Khanate --> s/t
If you want to start with some lighter drone Nadja is the way to go, start with Body Cage.
Also EARTH, if you're looking for some light drone, EARH 2 is a good way to start.
I'd Say start with Nadja and Earth. Once you get into both bands, listen to Sunn.
the2stranger
04-14-2009, 12:07 PM
It sucks that there are so few good drone bands.
Most of the time you're stuck with the more famous ones, or you get the sucky ones.
Tbh, the most famous ones are the best in that genre.
I prefer listening to pure Drone music though, not Drone Metal, I've discovered that I like about 4 or 5 Drone Metal bands but I love a looot of Drone artists like Basinski, Ambarchi, Andrew Chalk etc. way more.

The Dead Texan is one of my fav. (non metal). But Earth is probably my fav. drone band. Hibernaculum and TBMHITLS are awesome.
New Nadja album is awesome.
My favorite Drone project overall is Nadja and William Basinski, can't decide between both of them. In Metal, probably Sunn O))).
Ventriloquist
04-14-2009, 12:33 PM
Everything by Aidan Baker kicks ***. In metal yeah Sunn O))). I've listened to some other blackmetal/ambient/drone bands but they aren't that good tbh. Khanate is OK however, noise/drone-wise.
Have you heard Loscil Txus?

And no, I've never heard Loscil. Worth getting?
You should listen to some William Basinski, probably my favorite musician.

Well I quite enjoy it when I'm resting. It sounds like The Dead Texan and Bass Communion. I think it's worth getting. If you enjoy them get The Dead Texan and Goldmund if you don't already have them.

Jesu are more Industrial-ish imo.
The Dead Texan are great, never heard Goldmund either though.

That's the full-length. It's really interesting reading the history he wrote on WHW. His ex-girlfriend sent him this letter as to why the relationship wouldn't work anymore, around late Autumn I guess, and if you read some of the things she says it really puts into perspective almost all of the lyrics he writes. They all start to make sense.

We're kind of funeral, but I think we're faster than most funeral doom. We have some black metal elements going on as well. Not so much in our newer song other than my vocals.
We mix it up a lot. Our other songs have parts that sound like Earth, Sleep and some sludge. We just do whatever works.
EDIT: Probably won't be up today because the guitarist "is not in the mood" to do the mixing.

"true" doom fans, well I guess that's me! And although I've tried to think of a reasoned rational explanation, I can't. So here's an unreasoned, irrational explanation:
They sound like they mean it. Half my issue with the "southern" sounding bands is that they sound like they're fcuking around. Las Cruces don't. And most of the time anyway they sound like the apocalypse.

While Heaven Wept update
Greetings once again to all of our friends, fans, and colleagues...
After a lengthy hiatus, rehearsals have been both inspiring and extremely productive - a great deal of progress has been made on the arrangement of the previously announced brand new single, and this in turn has resulted in a surge in activity; while we will continue working on this epic for a release as soon as possible, the events which spawned the piece to begin with truly opened the floodgates - thus, the lyrics and melodies for the entire Vast Oceans Lachrymose album have now been completed, so being that the recording has been sitting in a "nearly finished" state for a couple years now, and many of you have been waiting very patiently (and some not so much), it has been decided that we will focus our efforts upon the completion of the album first, to be followed be said single shortly thereafter.
I'm also happy to report that after a couple years demoing new instruments, amps, effects and other gear, we have finally completed the total reconfiguration of our rigs, resulting in what we feel is the "ultimate" set-up, being almost 100% handmade, in some cases utilizing our own designs. I'd like to thank Onyx Forge Guitars, Diezel Amplification, Toneczar Effects, Analogman Effects, S.I.B. Effects, Prophecy Sound Productions, Effectrode Effects, Gig Rig switching systems, Stompin Ground pedalboards, and Lava Cable among others for bringing all of this to life.
Also, some of you may have heard that we've been asked to perform at the 2009 installment of the Born Too Late festival in Rochester, NY. on August 1st - let me just say that if the festival happens as planned, we will definitely be there, and we look forward to reuniting with our many friends from the previous edition as well as reconnecting with all of you who haven't stopped believing. We will update you as new information comes to light!
More news to come soon...
Cheers,
Tom

Just wanted to let everyone here know that the official website and our My Space page have been updated with a significant amount of news, but I'll summarize here anyway:
1. I have stepped aside as lead vocalist for a plethora of reasons, and after almost a year of covert rehearsals, I'm pleased to announce the new singer is Rain Irving from the old Magna Carta prog metal band Altura. I will be focusing primarily on guitar, just like back in '89, but will contribute harmony vocals and so forth along with Jim and Michelle.
2. We've booked a month of studio dates throughout the summer to complete the "Vast Oceans Lachrymose" album. The masters will be delivered to Cruz Del Sur Music by September 1st, allowing for a 2009 release.
3. New merch will be available in time for the Born Too Late festival, and we will have enough surplus for Internet orders after the fact as well. We are also in the process of renewing our EU merch deal, so there will be further designs available in 2010.
4. There will be a vinyl pressing of "VOL" and other subsequent releases made available throughout the 2009-2010 20th anniversary
5. We are in the process of planning dates in the EU for 2010 and a couple other shows domestically...more on that soon.
For more detailed info on these developments, feel free to peruse www.whileheavenwept.com and www.myspace.com/whileheavenwept
Looking forward to seeing everyone again in Rochester and beyond. Official Cruz Del Sur Music updates will follow in the next couple months.
Also, for anyone who hasn't heard yet, the Hour of 13 singer left.
