Early anathema was always a lot more doom than the other early doom/death bands. I love the first album and EPs. Can't help but think they went a bit boring with The Silent Enigma and then a bit crap.
NP - still Orodruin. This band is just amazing.
Yeah, I think Crestfallen is a masterpiece and Eternity is awesome too, I have Alternative 4 and I don't like it that much.

No prob man, Hey I have a doubt, are Anathema considered Doom Metal? because I saw that some people didn't consider them DM but I really hear a lot of DM moments in their songs.
NP: Anathema - ...And I Lust
thank you, for uploading it.
1# the song you're listening is great :thumb:
Anathema are the first doom metal band i listened too and are still my favourite Doom metal bands out there! to be serious they are on my top 5 list of all bands i listen to.
and yes, Anathema are doom! at first they made Doom-death Metal (as you hear in ....And I Lust); After the realse of "The Silent Enigma" (Their last doom death album) they changed their singer and started to make depressive-rock. and seriously i can't decide which anathema is better. old anathema and new anathema are both great! :thumb:
(old) Anathema opened for me doors to another world ...
- Serenades
- The Silent Enigma
- The Crestfallen
/me loves them

So I finally decided to check out Anathema. I downloaded their first EP... Crestfallen.
It seems pretty good, like Jondur said there seems to be a bit more doom than death which is cool. I like it a lot so far.

Yes. I can't believe that they've gone from that album to complete inactivity. They made such an impact (rightly so) but still no follow up.
If they were still going they'd be the best US doom band.

I absolutely LOVE My Dying Bride.
My fav songs of theres would be:
Black Heart Romance
For my fallen angel
for you
return to the beautiful
check them out, it's allllll good!
I have their whole discography except for the live album. For You is so absorbing and relaxing, yet the awesome groovey doom riffs don't seem out of place.
I still have yet to hear the re-recording of Return Of The Beautiful. Stupid guy I got The Dreadful Hours off didn't have it.
My favourite songs are
All Swept Away
Sear Me
The Cry Of Mankind
The Dreadful Hours
The Snow In My Hand
Your River
The Bitterness And The Bereavement
I like their first two records better than the rest. As The Flower Withers was my first Doom album, and I didn't know it had growling (I had only heard tracks from Like Gods Of The Sun), it scared the life out of me!

Their other good CD is Memorandum. It's the most Anathema doom-like of the lot. The earlier albums are them finding their sound, and the later albums after Burning are them moving in a completely different direction.
Two bands that sadly never get mentioned enough in this genre:
Grey skies fallen
Swallow the sun
I'll upload some of both this week.

Very good vocalst, I love his deep growls.
I've ordered Ghost Of Loss a while back, the special edition, with a dvd with a clip and some live material, it's good stuff, I can recommend it to fans of doom/death.
I love the lyrics to descending Winter, not all that special but they fit very well with the feel of the music:
Descending winters for all lands,
All hope is gone, in his hands.
out from the north, in to the south,
winter turned his frozen mouth

Bartender
06-18-2006, 06:56 PM
Unfortunately my thoughts on Pink are currently restricted, mostly to things like "I love the fact that it's finally winging its way towards me". I just finally managed to get it for a half-decent price some time last week, so I don't have it yet, but I do have high hopes for it. Pretty much every reaction I've heard to it so far has been positive; by and large ridiculously positive. Hopefully this is a good thing. What do you think of it?
Tyler
06-18-2006, 07:01 PM
It's very diverse. There are mellow songs, ballsy rock songs, drone songs, slower bluesy songs...the first song is even a Mogwai-esque post-rock song. In short, I love it.
Wow, just listened to Boris, that's great stuff. What do you reccomend I listen to by them first? I only checked out the songs on their myspace; Pink, Korosu and Ibitsu.
Tyler
06-19-2006, 08:09 AM
I'd recommend Akuma No Uta or Pink if you liked those, since those are all more rock songs. Most of their other records are drone or really experimental stuff. Pink will give you a taste of everything though, so I'd go with that, then check out their back catalogue.
Bartender
06-19-2006, 12:13 PM
I think I'm kind of hoping Pink will play like an extended Akuma No Uta (showing off all the different styles they play in one release and whatnot). And be good whilst doing so, naturally.
Anyway, it didn't arrive this morning. Though Dawn of Possession and a lighter with a picture of a carp on it did.

That's essentially what it is. Only better.
So uh...Cathedral? Who's into them? Satanic robots and such.
I always liked the instrumentation for Cathedral, but the vocals are pretty irritating on some songs. I like their upbeat stuff more than their doom stuff, The Garden of Unearthly Secrets is a good listen.
I like how this thread is going nicely again now, but I hope it doesn't turn into a 3 way discussion.
Tyler
06-19-2006, 04:06 PM
Cathedral's vocals/lyrics are all out cheese. That's why I love em.
There seems to be a few other dudes here into this stuff, I'm sure other people will get involved or whatever.
If it was cheesy lyrics which put me off, I would hardly like Nebula would I?

God dam, now people aren't gonna give funeral a chance because you hate it.
Terrorizer have a 3-issue doom special going on...it's awesome, you'd expect it to be really mainstream but they have two pages on funeral, interviews with guys who run fanzines, bits about drone and even two pages on doom album art! It's given me a lot of bands to check out.

Or you could work backwards - Reverend Bizarre, Warning, Count Raven, Revelation etc.
Or you could start in the middle and listen to say Penance.

I did a review for Skepticism's Farmakon if anyone's interested.
I got Esoteric's latest, Subconscious Dissolution Into The Continuum, and it's one bada$$ mofo. The Blood Of The Eyes is the first ever song with growling in it to almost get a tear out of me, and the second half of it is really heavy and insane.

Hells yeah man, I've only got Subconscious Dissolution etc. though! It's a classic album but there's only four songs (one is an outro) so it feels kinda short.
That's why I wanna get their earlier albums, their first two were double disc and from the time when they were all taking arseloads of horrible drugs. Very psychedelic apparently.
Nuh uh, Electric wizard all the way.
I love the Wiz man, but Eyehategod are just violence incarnate. I think the Wiz's self titled debut is so underrated, it's so heavy and also has this really bizarre atmosphere to it (helped a lot by the cover art).
But I am questioning who is the best sludge band now, because I just got Melvins' Bullhead! Boris is BADA$$.
And I just heard Skin Horse by Melvins... I'll never look at chipmunks the same way, that is the freakiest thing I've ever heard.
I thought Electric Wizard were a doom band. My favourite sludge band is either Eyehategod or Crowbar.Hmm, I dunno, Dopethrone is pretty darn sludgy, but some of their stuff sounds even stoner-ish. Crowbar own....

Esoteric's Epistemological Despondency is one damn trippy album. I love it! It has that lo-fi sludge of Stormcrowfleet and all of these bad acid trip samples...aaaah glorious.
I suppose this question could start some discussion in here; when you listen to really trippy bands, or just stoner bands, do you feel like doing drugs (if you're not already)? I used to be really against drugs, even saying that if I saw one of my friends with illegal drugs I'd report them, but after I got Dopethrone and got into all of the sludge, stoner and funeral doom I have suddenly developed this craving for everything brain-melting and am now very "legalise it!" So yeah, has this music had the same effect on anyone else?
I feel like I should be saying no, and calling you stupid, but Stoner Rock has always had a similar effect on me. I don't know why exactly, but the experience of listening to it just seems to be amplified by drugs. I don't really like getting mixed up in all that on a regular basis though, I get just as big a thrill out of driving to it.

Is this calculated to irritate me? Yes you managed to find the non-doom Trouble album (it is however a great album). Find the debut "Psalm 9" or "The Skull" or even "Run to the Light" then tell me it's not doom!
Candlemass are an epic doom band so very different to St Vitus (although both are most definitely doom). Similar bands who are very doom include Solitude Aeturnus, Solstice, Isole, While Heaven Wept, Millarca, Icefall.
Some more doom bands in the traditional vein who are very doom:
Warning
Orodruin
Reverend Bizarre ( please do not listen to "Doom over the world" and come back and say it's not doom - find something off "In the rectory of the bizarre reverend)
Las Cruces
Revelation
All of the above destroy any funeral doom, death/doom, sludge, sludgecore or neoclassical gothic industrial folk black metal doom band you can name!
On a different note has anyone heard Iron Hearse or Cambian Dawn. I think they might appeal to both the doom and stoner crowd.

I think actually your problem is that you don't know what doom is. I'm sure that Witchfinder General, Trouble, Pentagram etc are a LOT less slow death metal with keyboards than Skepticism or Esoteric! I personally don't care if you prefer the latest release from "Withered candles in the velvet moonlit crimson adjectives" to "Day of Reckoning" or "Death Penalty" but your favourite bands aren't doom. Now go and find a song of the bands I recommended. Now THAT is doom.

I know what Doom is. People tell me Saint Vitus is a pivotal Doom band, and the song Children Of Doom sounds doomy enough to me. And I have two Candlemass albums which sound appropriately doomish to me.
I just enjoy Funeral and Death/Doom better than Traditional Doom, I don't think it's "proper doom" or whatever. I like it better than Trad because it's not trying to replicate the 70's or Black Sabbath, it's just doing its own thing. I have much more respect for those bands, not the "we love Black Sabbath but we're different because...we're new" bands.
Nevertheless I shall heed your suggestion and download a Reverend Bizarre album. Orodruin are ownage, by the way.

i disagree with most of your points. Doom bands are no more just copying Black Sabbath anymore than funeral doom bands are copying Thergothon or doom/death bands are copying My Dying Bride. Being a jobless 17 year old with download limit free internet, I download everything. Besides I was shocked and amazed to find a Trouble CD around here, there's no places here that would stock anything like the Reverend.
And to your second argument; NO. Have you even heard Skepticism or Tyranny? Completely different to Thergothon man, I mean the closest Skepticism come to sounding like Thergothon is some of the washy sounding guitar parts on Farmakon. And Tyranny is another completely different case, last time I checked Thergothon didn't drone on for 11 minutes for each song.
I've never heard any death/doom like Esoteric. They're truly bizarre. And I've never heard a death/doom band copy My Dying Bride, in fact I don't think I've heard of any that use keyboards or violins.
They're influenced (maybe not even that) by Thergothon. Trad Doom bands intentionally emulate Black Sabbath. I mean Claw Tower by Orodruin, as awesome as it is, just sounds like Into The Void, right down to the guitar tone. There's lots of bands that sound like another, but this is rather unintentional (good example being the large wave of Neurosis copycats).

No excuse. Get a job if you want to buy a CD - if you're too lazy to get a job then you can't have the things you want. F**** sake man I had two jobs at your age - this meant that I could buy CDs. If I was skint, I didn't go shoplifting!
And to your second argument; NO. Have you even heard Skepticism or Tyranny? Completely different to Thergothon man, I mean the closest Skepticism come to sounding like Thergothon is some of the washy sounding guitar parts on Farmakon.
Dude, that was the point I was trying to make!
And Tyranny is another completely different case, last time I checked Thergothon didn't drone on for 11 minutes for each song.
Oooh! Sounds ace! Where can I get some of this 11 minutes of drone music (oxymoron)??!!
And I've never heard a death/doom band copy My Dying Bride, in fact I don't think I've heard of any that use keyboards or violins.
 Really??? You've never heard a death doom band with keyboards? Are you joking? Maybe your definition of death doom is different to mine? So for example:
November's Doom, The Prophecy, Ataxerie, Decomposed etc Are they what you would call Death/doom?
They're influenced (maybe not even that) by Thergothon. Trad Doom bands intentionally emulate Black Sabbath. I mean Claw Tower by Orodruin, as awesome as it is, just sounds like Into The Void, right down to the guitar tone. There's lots of bands that sound like another, but this is rather unintentional (good example being the large wave of Neurosis copycats).
Right, let's stop here. The only reason I got into this with you is comments like "Are there any Trad doom bands that actually play doom" when the answer is yes, they all play doom, Thergothon etc don't!
Incidentily, have a listen to Epicurian Mass by Orodruin - much thicker production than Clawtower (which was a demo), so I would guess not an intentional guitar tone at all.

Hey Phototropic, I listened to all of that Bomb the Sun EP, and I loved it. That music kicks some serious ***.
Oh yeah I forgot to comment about that, it's really great. Great length for an EP aswell! I'll keep my eyes on these guys.
Glad you both liked
I'm not actually sure if its an EP or an album, they keep a low profile and don't say much

That's a moral argument right there, not a music one, so I'll agree to disagree so we're not wasting time.
Dude, that was the point I was trying to make!
What...you said they all copycat Thergothon. That confused me!
Oooh! Sounds ace! Where can I get some of this 11 minutes of drone music (oxymoron)??!!
Fine. 11 minutes of ambience. 11 minutes of drone. I don't care whether it's music or not, I enjoy the mood and atmosphere of it.
 Really??? You've never heard a death doom band with keyboards? Are you joking? Maybe your definition of death doom is different to mine? So for example:

Ok you got me there, out of those bands the only one I've heard is November's Doom and perhaps I need to listen to them again. I remember their debut, yes, has female vocals but I don't remember any keyboards or violins.
Right, let's stop here. The only reason I got into this with you is comments like "Are there any Trad doom bands that actually play doom" when the answer is yes, they all play doom, Thergothon etc don't!
I love being an elitist so I'm going to continue! Muahahahaha. They play a different style of doom, but they're still doom, buddy. Well... I'll let you get away with not calling them doom, but calling them slow death metal is ridiculous. You sound like one of those guys that goes "omg I can't understand what they're saying so they're untalented" or "oh they're growling, that means it's death metal, that means it's stupid".
Incidentily, have a listen to Epicurian Mass by Orodruin - much thicker production than Clawtower (which was a demo), so I would guess not an intentional guitar tone at all.
My mistake. I wasn't complaining about the tone sounding like Iommi, I don't care about tone, they can strive for his tone all they want. It's the riff itself damn you.
In other news, Dopesmoker by Sleep is... awesome. Very hypnotising.

Trying to safeguard the future of the music I love is not wasting time. The ability of the bands you are stealing from to make music in the future is directly linked to the sales of their records. You're not stealing from millionaires like Metallica here, you're proposing to take something from three guys who all have jobs with which to support their families etc - if they want to play gigs etc they have to be able to sell enough records to justify it.
What...you said they all copycat Thergothon. That confused me!
I was actually trying to draw a parallel between you saying all doom bands are trying to copy Sabbath.
I love being an elitist so I'm going to continue! Muahahahaha.
OK but I'm away on business from tomorrow so we'll have to wrap it up today.
.... calling them slow death metal is ridiculous.
I hear a lot more similarity between [insert funeral doom or doom/death band name here] and say Autopsy than I do with [insert funeral doom or doom/death band name here] and the bands that started doom ie Pentagram, The Obsessed, St Vitus etc. Their music is built on ultra-heavy downtuned guitars and growled vocals - with the exception of the speed how is that not death metal? Bearing in mind that there are death metal bands that have experimented with atmospherics etc like Demigod for example.
Slow does not equal doom. A direct lineage from Sabbath through Pentagram then Vitus and Trouble makes you doom!
You sound like one of those guys that goes "omg I can't understand what they're saying so they're untalented" or "oh they're growling, that means it's death metal, that means it's stupid".
I'm currently listening to Master. After that I'll probably stick some Repulsion on. I like my death, death and my doom, doom!

If I can't buy their records (they're not available around here, I checked) then how am I to support them? I respect that you want me to support them, and I wish I could, but I really can't until I get a credit card, and I don't want to wait weeks, even months, to get a CD from a band just so you can show me what true doom is. So you're wasting time because you're not going to convince me to buy CDs.
I was actually trying to draw a parallel between you saying all doom bands are trying to copy Sabbath.
Ah, that you did.

I've made all the points I can make so yes, let's consider it wrapped. One more thing though...

Fair enough man, they do sound more death than doom, but the aesthetics and everything are completely different to death. I mean, even disEMBOWELMENT who have blastbeats quite often are clearly not just death with the occasional slow part. Lots of moaning and haunting clean guitar.
Mmmm death...I like my death brutal and my doom depressive...but both are groovy and that's all that counts.

Damn right it's too good to be true. I've waited way too long for a band to do what they've done. It's essentially doom but there's a lot of folk and psychedelia influences in there.

I've been listening to a hell of a lot of doom lately, and I'm finding that it's a great genre. My latest find is Starchild, a pretty good band.
I have a strong feeling that doom metal is going to become my favourite genre.
I've also been listening to:
Candlemass, Cathedral, Electric Wizard, Confessor, My Dying Bride, November's Doom, Paradise Lost, Reverend Bizarre, Orodruin, Spirit Caravan, Warning, Count Raven, Goatsnake, Katatonia and Lacrimas Profundere.
I'm really keen to listen to some Sunn O))) and Boris, so I would be grateful if someone could upload any of that (apart from the Earth split). Also, some Thergothon would be good if anyone has any. I do have some music for trade (http://www.recordnerd.com/lists/seltzer), and I have more than what is on the list.

Of course man, they're the best doom band. I haven't got that though. I got Ethere the other day, really great atmosphere and absolutely horrifying rendition of The March and the Stream (I can see why people name it the most depressing song ever).
I love how with Skepticism you get the variation. There's the big, grandiose and powerful stuff done in the Stormcrowfleet era, the funeral march-like stuff they did in the Lead & Aether period (which should be banned, there's no happy moments in the music, some notes are painful) and the trippy, scary stuff done in the Farmakon era. I'm eager to see what they do now.
