Nostalgia
04-01-2008, 10:52 PM
I like it better. The drumming is excellent on the Strength to Dream, the vocals are a little more natural sounding, the riffs are flatter (it sounds better), the production is kind of different, and lyrically I think it's stronger.

I dunno, it's just more of a depressing album I believe, but they're both equally draining in a sense.

NemesisDivina
04-01-2008, 10:56 PM
The vocals especially are really depressing. That's what I enjoy about them though. They're really unique and they manage to create that really emotionally draining atmosphere.

I love the drum sound on WFAD a lot... but sometimes the drummer gets into these really obnoxious patterns that sort of annoy me.

I always meant to check The Strength To Dream out, but I never got around to it. I mean, WFAD had a great cover like http://static.metal-archives.com/images/1/3/1/4/131406.jpg ,

And then I saw http://static.metal-archives.com/images/5/2/9/5/52957.jpg which just puts me right off. Talk about fruity. That's one of the few times judging a book by it's cover has really come up for me, so to speak.

That's funny... the revamped version of Nemesis' (Leif Edling's project before Candlemass for you fags who don't know) song Black Messiah, which is now Incarnation of Evil, changed slightly over the years. On the Nemesis verision (without Messiah) it says:

"Won't you come, come and join us"?
You had better!
There's no time to beg for mercy
Messiah says no, no

However, on the Candlemass version it goes

"Won't you come, come and join us"?
You had better!
There's no time to beg for mercy
The devil says no, no

It's weird in the sense that one lined changed when Messiah actually did vocals. HMMMM.

Yeah lul. It's funnier how much some other songs changed, like Dark Reflections. The early version has none of the same riffs, and none of the same lyrics. I guess Leif just liked the title.

You may wanna check out Mythical and Magical, it has a lot less messing around than The Lords of Hypocrisy and therefor is less boring. I still love TLOH, especially the title track which is easily my favorite Pagan Altar song.

Volume 1 is good but it can be kinda boring and the production makes it really hard to enjoy.

All their albums are consistently good. It's great how Lord of Hypocrisy sounds like it was recorded in the late '70s.

Very good indeed. :)

@Masscows

Pretty much all of Katatonia's albums are great, my very favorite is Dance of December Souls with Viva Emptiness being my 2nd favorite. DoDS isn't very accessible though, and Brave Murder Day might be a better place to start, especially if you're an Akerfeldt fan.

I'll get around to checking out all of the albums recommended to me in the next couple weeks. Thanks everyone.

Pernicious Enigma is > life.
Its 2 hours long though.

Unfortunately its the only one I've heard but I really want their whole discography as soon as I get some money, Esoteric rule.
Lords of Hypocrisy is my fav.
the vocals sounded shitty to me at first, but when you get into the flow of the songs you realize how awesome they are.

I like Subconscious Dissolution and Metamorphogenesis better.
But all Esoteric is sweet.
It's just that the production on the later albums gives it a bit more power.

How can you like Ancient Dreams more than Nightfall? Ancient Dreams, to me, is much less doomier, has worse production, and doesn't showcase Messiah's best vocal performance.

Nightfall will always be Messiah's best, but that's not to say Ancient Dreams doesn't have great tracks. Epistle No. 81 is one of my favorite Candlemass songs.

The production on Ancient Dreams doesn't make sense to me. Nightfall has superb production (vocally and instrumentally) and the production on Ancient Dreams is thin, Messiah's vocals don't sound as they should, and it almost has a minor "tin can" sound to me.

The album sounds much better through speakers, but forget listening to it with headphones.
