erm...you could check out http://www.bumsnogger.co.uk/ they really are a wicked band. once you've got past the hilarity of their name they're wicked.
Kerrang! Review of Bum the Missing 2005 Tour split 7" with Among the Missing
Two great examples of how a combination of strong booze and a bad attitude can result in gloriously loud and filthy music. Bumsnogger may have an appalling name, but their twisted sludge is guaranteed to send you creaming towards the off-licence. Among The Missing are altogether darker and more unhinged, like a council estate Black Flag whacked out on 'ludes. Doom-laden fun for all the family. Catch them on the 'Bum The Missing' tour now.
www.myspace.com/bumsnogger is the only thing I can find online.
Check them out.

When I listen to Doom, I don't want all of this gloomy "make me bleed" nonsense which My Dying Bride have gotten caught up in as of late; I want monolithic riffs that make me stand back, fall to the floor and worship the God of downtuned guitars. Novembers Doom do just that. I have all of their albums with the exception of their newest, and although I've only listened to a few songs from the first one, I love them. They floor me everytime.

"Not the Strong" pwns
The music is definitely mindblowing, but the vocals and lyrics nearly put me right off. Is it a different vocalist? If so, he's certainly lost his growl (or he sneezed all the mucus out of his throat).
"If only my mother knew the real me" get out of here! If they're gonna get all doom 'n' gloom they may as well do it PROPERLY. But I still say the music, however fast and undoomish, is awesome.
I'm bumping this thread, 'cause Cathedral are probbably going to become my favourite band.

Reverend Bizarre is the only doom metal I've heard and I like it. And early Katatonia. Recommend some more.
Bands like Reverend Bizarre:
St Vitus

The Obsessed
Orodruin
The Gates of Slumber
Bands like Katatonia - well they ripped all of their early sound off Paradise Lost "Gothic" so maybe check that out.

Can someone give me a good description of "Stoner / Doom Metal"
I dont know if this is "good" or not, but I'll give it a shot.
It's basically slower metal, which is typically very bottom heavy and has a lot of groove to it.
Here's teh wikipedia definitions:
Doom metal is a form of heavy metal that emerged as a recognised subgenre in the mid-1980s. It is slow and heavy and intended to evoke an atmosphere of darkness, despair and melancholy. It is very strongly influenced by the early work of Black Sabbath, and a number of early Black Sabbath tracks, such as "Black Sabbath", are often considered embryonic or prototypical doom metal songs.
Stoner metal is best known by its commonly stripped down production, use of psychedelic guitar effects, and deep 1970s-rock influence from groups like Black Sabbath.

No, not really. Their first album (with three Kyuss members) was hard, but not stoner. Now, their more, alternative, rock, although its not always right to catogorize them in a single genre. Definately not stoner/doom

Doomshine are epic doom along the lines of Solitude Aeturnus. They are quite emotional compared to the likes of Solitude Aeturnus and Solstice. I must say I don't rate them that highly - I'd recommend the likes of Solstice, SA, While Heaven Wept, Isole or Scald (RUS) instead.

Oh and to the fellow that said the vocal effect is annoying, Dopethrone and We Live are the only ones with that effect. He sounds so much worse with the un-distorted vocals! I think the effect adds to the character of Dopethrone but hey, whatever blows your whistle.

Speaking of the fellows from Candlemass, I got their self-titled release. There's some quality riffage right there. Well an ad for them in Metal Maniacs said "all new power metal from Sweden!" so yeah.
I discovered quite a cool band with a stoner vibe to them; SIGH! I've heard Pale Monument and the singing and keyboards sound straight out of the 60's, with a pretty heavy metal riff going behind them.
I also got* a few more Electric Wizard albums. Chrono.Naut is awesome, if not short. Come My Fanatics... is a bit... thin? Still trippy and heavy, but it ain't got nothin' on Dopethrone. Let Us Prey gets so much flack for being so different from Dopethrone, I for one think it's the spookiest, doomiest and trippiest thing I've ever heard. ...A Chosen Few starts off with a riff of pure evil. And I love the drum sound, really heavy (I hate the soft *tap* that they call a "snare" on Come My Fanatics...)! I might even go on to love it more than Dopethrone.

Speaking of the fellows from Candlemass, I got their self-titled release. There's some quality riffage right there.
Agree so far.
Too bad the lyrics are laughably cheesy
I'd say some of them are a bit odd - certainly nothing up to the lyrical genius of Samarithan or At the Gallows End.
the vocals are horrid (I've never been a fan of Messiah)
The vocals are superb. Messiah's best performance with Candlemass. With the exception of Rob Lowe, Messiah is the best doom metal vocalist.
the drumming is boring
Look, I'm a drummer and I don't have a problem with the drums - they're tight and powerful. What do you expect in a doom metal band? Inverted paradiddles on two kick drums? gravity blasts? You like Electric Wizard and I could play most of their stuff with one hand.
and the riffs occasionally get repetitive.
Again an odd statement from someone who likes EW.
In short Candlemass are ace.

In short Candlemass are ace.
Ace they are, but they just lack something for me.
The drums aren't meant to be technical, I know this, I did not say they had to be. I just said they're boring. They don't do anything. Assassin of the Light has some cool fills in the first verse, that's about as exciting as they get. EW's drummer sucks but he does very energetic fills and good beats, I love what he does for Weird Tales.
Messiah never suited Candlemass, for me. He just... I don't really know why, his style just never clicked with me. Sometimes it gets very annoying, and when he tries to be harsh and serious it's hilarious. I loved the guy on Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, he sounded more serious and had a seriously wicked scream on him.
Witches is awesome, so is Mars And Volcanoes and The Man Who Fell From The Sky. That's about it.
They just sound like a british heavy metal band with a lot of Sabbath influence. I never liked that british style.
The riffs, yeah they're good until they get all 80's hair metal. And yes, the riffs in EW are nearly all the same, but that makes it kinda hypnotising...
I don't know. The Mass just don't click with me all that often. They have lots of NICE songs though.

The Japanese band?
Yah. Apparently they're avant-garde but that song is really stoner-ish.
They're an epic doom band. That's what epic doom is - see Solitude Aeturnus, Solstice etc. I think TRUE doom covers it.
I don't find anything epic about their self-titled album, but yes Nightfall (from what I've heard) and Epicus are very epic. And, well, then I guess I'm not a big fan of this "TRUE doom".
Don't start. There's a big big difference between NWOBHM and Poison or Ratt.
Yeah yeah ok ok, I was exaggerating a bit. Sorry.
By the way... people are calling Assassin of the Light their best song. Yes, it starts off nicely... but the bit after the chorus where it keeps starting the riff, only to cut it off and say "assassin of the light" is, I'm not kidding, the only part of a song I've heard that actually frustrates me. Most days I can't listen to that bit.

I don't find anything epic about their self-titled album,
Not even Copernicus? It's about as epic as it gets.
And, well, then I guess I'm not a big fan of this "TRUE doom".
TRUE DOOM= Revelation, St Vitus, Solstice, Solitude Aeturnus etc
NOT true doom = Electric Wizard, Orange Goblin, My Dying Bride etc
By the way... people are calling Assassin of the Light their best song.
Not me. I think it's average. Copernicus, Seven Silver Keys on the other hand are very very good.
NB Nothing can be compared to EDM and Nightfall - it's just not fair, they're classics and beyond anything in this day and age.

NOT true doom = Electric Wizard, Orange Goblin, My Dying Bride etc
Do you at least consider them seperate sub genre of doom?
Bartender
02-15-2006, 05:20 AM
Well Orange Goblin aren't even really untrue doom, like them though I do. They're just a (stoner) rock band.
Electric Wizard are pretty much a stoner band at heart, too; they're just at one extreme end of the spectrum.
Jondur
02-15-2006, 08:17 AM
Do you at least consider them seperate sub genre of doom?
MDB = death/doom
but you have to consider that death/doom really doesn't have anything to do with doom. These bands, well the originators of the style (Paradise Lost, Anathema, MDB) were death metal bands who added the atmospherics of Into the Pandemonium Celtic Frost. Therefore no input from the originators of doom (ie Pentagram, St Vitus etc).
Orange Goblin and Electric Wizard = stoner (as Bartender pointed out).
Genre pedantry aside, I'm glad to see some people picked up on the suggestions I made - It's a shame we can't upload songs here anymore because there's loads more to hear!

OK - for starters there is no such thing as stoner doom. There is stoner and there is doom. They are very different.
According to this site- http://www.doom-metal.com/faq.html- there's stoner rock and stoner/doom. but i dont know, u might be right, i'm not an expert, thats how i found that site.

Have any of you heard Deadboy and the Elephantmen? It's (former Acid Bath singer) Dax's band, and I highly enjoy them. Very gloomy stoner-ish (as in only kinda!) stuff. I managed to get their album If This Is Hell Then I'm Lucky, it's a great listen from start to finish. Jon, I know you like Dax's vocals, perhaps you'd like this band too. I can YSI if anyone is interested. I also got his other band's s/t album Agents of Oblivion. It's similar, but a bit more rockish and not nearly as good as far as I'm concerned.

I'm definitely interested. I have the Agents of Oblivion album and I think its pretty good (although nowhere near the genius of Acid Bath). On a related note I was watching the Acid Bath DVD this morning (it's a good way to wake up!) - well worth getting, great footage of rehearsals in a barn and some decent gigs.

Mine are:
Reverend Bizarre
Cathedral
Pale Divine
Candlemass
Bazarov

I'm new to doom metal. I recently got Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. It's amazingly good. I need more. So I guess my favorite doom metal band is Candlemass only because they're the only one I've heard besides Black Sabbath (If you consider them doom)

Before I ever heard Doom Metal my speculation would be that it would be scary atmospheric type metal, such as The Call of Ktulu by Metallica or something like that. When I got a Candlemass album off the Daily Upload I realized it was nothing like that, and it's just a drony rock-based form of metal. Not really my cup of tea.

Saint Vitus IS good doom.
But good doom means a bit stoner.
Even Kyuss, Josh Homme's old band is pretty doom-y.
Paramaecium would probably be one of the doomiest of the doom metal bands, to be honest: extremely funereal, VERY slow, incredibly, obsessively dark, and very beautiful. The only "problem" is that they identify with a Christian mindset, and their drummer, Jayson Sherlock, shares duties with them and with the Christian speed-death band Mortification. And they're Australian. \m/
Anybody who's curious can check out my gushing review of their album "Within the Ancient Forest." :D

I love doom like sex. I tried checking out some Funeral Doom. Nortt is awesome, best atmosphere I've ever heard. But the other band I checked out... Thergothon. Yeah they are horrible, there's no heaviness, the production just ruins everything and the guitar has this annoying effect on it.

for me there exist two types of doom metal
#1) the traditional ones who are in tradition of black sabbaths self titled album -> f.e.: Candlemass, who are more rock than metal
#2) doom metal bands who play doom metal but have nothing in common with the traditional doom metal! f.e.: Anathema, My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Sunn O))) (=Drone doom metal), Novembre, etc.
in this category i count bands from the funeral doom metal corner too! f.e.: Pantheist, Shades of Despair.
thats my definition of doom... and i prefer the second one - for me thats doom

Gothic is not a subcategorie of Doom, neither is stone & co.

I know the differences. I was saying a thread that only discussed strictly doom metal bands would suck. TRULY good doom metal bands are hard to come by, and I feel it's a genre that's gone pretty stagnant as of late as far as new and good stuff goes.
The black metal thread doesn't just talk about black metal, they discuss alot of symphonic black metal, as well as some folk and viking metal, avant garde and anything with ties to black metal. The death metal thread discusses tech death, melodic death, and all the other types of death.

Speaking as a fan of Gothic music, it really doesn't have anything in common with doom metal aside from the fact that it's people playing electric guitars, bass guitars, drumsets, and sometimes keyboards and they usually have singers.
That's about it. It's not a subgenre or an off-shoot.

and beside that, i too want to make rather music which is "easy" to play but hits you full emotionally... for me THIS is the purpose of making music, not showing off how good you can play guitar. the only sad thing is that most ppl i know think the other way round.

I know a lot of pieces of fast music that hit me just as hard as the slower ones, such as Jason Becker's "Air," John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," or either of the solos in "Buckethead" by Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains. It's not really about how simple or difficult it is, it's about the notes that are being played and the manner in which they are done so. Hell, even the wankage parts in "Acid Rain" by Liquid Tension Experiment get me more than a lot of music.
But to get back on topic, has anybody here heard of Boris? They're a Japanese drone/stoner/psychadelic band, named after a Melvins song. It's some pretty moving stuff. My favorite album is probably Amplifier Worship, one of their drone albums.

Like that guy after you said, it's not how difficult or easy it is, it's just how you can relate to it.
And I get that alot, the Pig Destroyer thing. People are like "You think THIS is the most emotional album you've ever heard?!?!?!?!". But I can relate to it so good, and yeah, I'll stop before I go into a huge, huge rant :p
