View Full Version : Any other Stoner/Doom metal fans?
I've heard and I like :)
Really cool stuff, I guess 2 of the members are from some German doom band called Voodooshock so they definitely incorporate that into their music.
Any fans of Dead Meadow?
I don't know how many albums they have but the one I own is ****ing great, they remind me of Toner Low at times.
I'm listening to Howls From the Hills.
I actually saw their guitar player open for Boris which was awesome.

I'm trying, and I guess I've no luck when it comes to finding music that's pretty obscure.
My friend has OM Pilgrimage but he's at work until tomorrow. Would it be possible for you to send me links in my e-mail again like you did earlier?
Any of the rest that you mentioned earlier too if you have them.

Ohh, nice link there. I usually use google to search, but I didn't think of having it search through the blogs section.
I was able to find a link that way for the OM CD, as well as Cathedral's Caravan Beyond Redemption and Boris Rainbow.
I think I should be set with new things to listen to now.

I'm loving this Worship so far actually Austin. So take that.
I mean it's still a little odd for me at parts because I've listened to very little Funeral Doom but it seems to do things very, very excellently. I'll take a while to absorb it but so far it's shaping up wonderfully.
I might even review it if I can get a good enough feel for it; I want to do it justice while still coming in as someone not too experienced, but I dont want to sound like an ignorant jackass.

OM Pilgrimage is fantastic. Jumps into the top 5 albums of 2007 easily. It's got such an amazing atmosphere that's different from anything I've heard before in the genre. It's almost got an otherworldly feel, and the contrast between the soft vocals and the gloomy music creates a sort of 'inner peace' feeling that erupts from chaos. Make sense to anyone else? This is going to be an album I listen to for a very long time to come.
Sun O))) Black One is very intense, and haunting sounding. I enjoyed it, and it's definitely worth another listen but it may be too dark for me.

The Sword would be fun to see live. I like a few songs off of Ages of Winters. They write some damn catchy riffs tbh... even though they're basically just ripping off of Sabbath.
I've been listening a lot of Sabbath lately....and Dopethrone

It doesn't say anything about it being 21+ on the site, but I e-mailed the place just to make sure...

Jonas's harsh vocals>Mikaels'
No joke, but keep in mind I've only been listening to metal for a short while.
Viva Emptiness is their best.
Chris: I'll send you a couple of albums to your last.fm shoutbox :)

What are Katatonia like? I've never heard.
pure ****ing ownage. they'll rip your face off, sew it back on and rip you to pieces...
...not exaggerating

Yeah, start with Viva Emptiness or The Great Cold Distance, if you're looking for some really harsh doom stuff then get Dance of December Souls.
Sounds good, thanks.
Are they similar to any bands I might know?
NemesisDivina
12-04-2007, 09:34 PM
No... Katatonia are really difficult to put into one genre. Especially their later stuff.
Dance of December Souls is soooo good. I'd say start with that if anything, that's where I started and I was hooked right off the bat. However, I think Viva Emptiness is giving DoDS a run for it's money atm.
Angmar
12-04-2007, 09:34 PM
Meh, not really, I guess they kind of sound like Anathema.
Haven't really heard much Anathema either :-x

I don't really like Dance of December Souls that much, other than In Silence Enshrined. Pretty cool live band though.
I prefer Brave Murder Day, I know, blasphemy and all...but I like it a bit more.

Turn Loose the Swans from My Dying Bride is also similar to Dance of December Souls. I think Dance... is good, but not brilliant. Brave Murder Day is better, if a little boring. Viva Emptiness is my favourite 'new Katatonia' album also.
Jonas's harsh vocals>Mikaels'
I completely disagree. Jonas has horrible harsh vocals.

Back to Katatonia, apart from strongly disagreeing that they're doom, I actually only liked Tonight's Decision. I don't know why but sometimes an album just clicks with you. Even though later albums were similar I didn;t get into them at all.
Having said that, they are the worst live band I've ever seen. Worse that May'feedback'Hem, worse than Fear 'prerecorded guitar parts and crap vox' Factory. Even worse than Mortician.

rattlehead42147
12-06-2007, 02:18 PM
haha how did i forget them? i have a hard copy of Nightfall and reviewed it....
:p
Very good Kage.
Traditional doom is doom metal in its purest, non-crossover form. It is mostly slow, riff-based "downer" metal which was influenced by Black Sabbath, Pentagram as well as the NWOBHM movement. Typical examples include Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Trouble and Candlemass. Four "waves" have so far been recognised in the history of traditional doom: the first one started with the originators of the entire genre, the proto-doom bands Black Sabbath and Pentagram; the second one dates from the mid-1980s, especially in the work of Saint Vitus and Candlemass; the third one started with the success of Cathedral's debut album Forest of Equilibrium; and the fourth has been affiliated with Reverend Bizarre.
Also
Epic doom is often used as a description for traditional doom bands with a stronger medieval and/or fantasy influences in lyrics. It is quite common that these bands present a more progressive style. Also, vocals have a much more narrative, epic, or even theatrical presence. Epic doom traces its roots through more traditional metal such as Manowar and Iron Maiden in addition to emulating the concepts of pre-doom bands such as Black Sabbath. Some of today's most popular doom metal bands with this epic feel are veterans Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus.

This is kind of vague i know but one song off Ancient Dreams is a complete rip off of another on Nightfall. I'll post it when i figure it out but the song on AD is a slowed down version of the same riffs/structure on Nightfall.
@pate
yeah i knew most of that stuff, i heard SV and didn't really like them that much tbh. But i've never heard Trouble, and Solitude Aeturnus have been on my "wishlist" for a while. i didn't know they were a doom metal band though.
