And The Alchemist (their new album) shows them really starting to develop their own sound rather than tending to mimick others.

Doom education:

Albums you must own:

Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Nightfall
Revelation - Yet So Far
St Vitus - V
Solstice - New Dark Age
Solitude Aeturnus - Through The Darkest Hour
Trouble - The Skull

This really depends on what kind of doom you want to get into!!! These mentioned bands fall into the Traditional (St Vitus, Solitude Aeturnus) and Epic doom (Candlemass [some of you may argue with me on this one], Solstice). As for Revelation, I haven't heard that one. And Trouble fall's into the Stoner/doom category - probably -, with nice Rock'n'Roll/Feel good thing. although I only heard two albums...

If you want to listen to some "newer" Doom with a little Death metal (ie Doom/Death), then I would recommend: My Dying Bride (older), Anathema (old), Mourning Beloveth (the 'Sullen Sulcus' album is what I recommend to start with), Evoken (the new album just came out, it's wonderful), Ataraxie (these guys have only one album, but it's awesome. It borders Funeral Doom at some places, and has Death metal parts), AHAB (imagine Moby Dick, and Doom, and you'll get AHAB :), Disembowelment (Raw-raw Doom/Death, this band is actually one of the first Doom/death bands, beside Winter), Officium Triste. And some newer doom/death bands I listened to are: Before the Rain, The Drowning, Syrach, Eria d'Or, Imindain...

In about 1990-1991 Doom metal spawned another subgenre Funeral Doom (probably one of my favorite subgenre :naughty: ). These bands focused more on emotions (emotions being mainly about Depression), and not the music (although this can be sad for Doom/death, but I think it's a bit less present. You're welcome to argue!). Some cult Funeral bands are: Thergothon, Skepticism and Funeral (Norway). But if i where someone that was new to Funeral Doom, I wouldn't start with these bands! And some of the "easy" listening funeral doom bands are: Shape Of Despair (the most well known funeral doom band) (start with Angels of distress), Longing for Dawn (ambiental Funeral Doom!), Nortt (Black Funeral doom), Tyranny (Great atmosphere), Wreck of the Hesperus, Colosseum, Wijlen Wij, Worship...

Other Subcategories are: Gothic/Doom (My dying Bride [newer], Novembre?), Avantgarde doom (Esoteric), Epic Doom (Isole), Sludge doom (Crowbar), Drone doom (Sunn O))) ), Black doom (Nortt)..........

and there are a lot of GREAT doom bands: something I urge you to buy despite what I sad above is: Warning Watching From a Distance (a combination of Funeral and Epic Doom). Just listen to it once! You will not regret it! (this goes for not just doom metal fans, not just metal fans, but for music lovers in general) general!!!)

and now as for who is my favorite Stoner/doom band: it is Wall of Sleep from Hungary who incorporate lot of groovy stuff in their music!

reps for mentioning Funeral (who don't get a lot of recognition) and Mourning Beloveth (who also don't).

Though I would classify Esoteric as Funeral Doom, they definitely are more experimental.

A couple great Funeral Doom bands I would like to add to this list are Torture Wheel and Wraith Of The Ropes.

the2stranger: Nice Avatar... you don't want me to start talking about Arcturus. They are fabulous... Sideshow Symphonies is probably my favorite albums of all time (in the NOT doom genre). A great drummer, with great musicians, and great atmosphere, and wonderful music. Don't get me wrong, the album isn't perfect, but I think a not perfect album is much more enjoyable, then a perfect one!

Oh yeah and just so you people know, the mastermind behind arcturus (keyboardist), has a side project called Spiral Architect... and this music IS crazy! People who like progressive music, with a lot of other genre influences (but it's mostly metal), I urge you to check it out! oh, and it's not the usual Dream theater Prog, trust me!!!
(ok, this was a bit of topic) :(

repcak: Personally, I don't like Sunn O))) . But I hear that there music live is totally different then on records! So, if i have a chance, then i will check them out live!
Can you tell me you're experience from the concert???

Luc214: Yes, Funeral is a great band! the earlier albums (Tristesse, and Tragedies) are cult stuff, and hard to find! There bassist, Einar Andre Fredriksen, was/is and idol for me, in some strange way... it sadeness (not sure, how this is written) me that he commited suicide :'( .
And I think Mourning Beloveth have a lot of recognition in the underground scene (mostly, or almost only among doom fans). Don't get me wrong, but there are a lot of talented doom bands, who don't get even that. Doom bands who only played in their country (in a 150km radius), and have world wide fans, just because their music can be downloaded through the internet... Such a band would be The River for example... (I really don't know if downloading music is a "good" or "bad" thing)

Nostalgia: Yes, Imindain is a great band, but I don't like the drums :) (yes, I'm a drummer! :D )

OK... Epic doom! Well I don't know precisely, where it began, but that's not the point. As in any doom subgenre, epic doom also concentrates on atmosphere, although a bit differently. To tell the truth it's a bit confusing for me too, since there are a lot of bands like: Solstice, Doomsword... who concentrate their music on Power metal themes (Dragons, battles and stuff). and then there are bands who concentrate more on emotions, struggles, inner battles... these would be: Warning (as I mentioned in my last post), Lamented Souls (you guys probably don't even know this, but vocal duties are carried out by, none other then Simen Hestnaes from Dimmu Borgir... you know the bassist with are really awesome voice... well in lamented souls it only gets better), Isole (also a great band from Sweden, and they have an album coming out in early 2008. Can't wait! Check out their second album: Throne of Void!), Morgion (unfortunately they disbanded in 2004 or 2005, not sure, anyway they had a little different recipe, than the other doom bands, but still very epic, and atmospheric as HELL!), Raven Black Night (they are mosly heavy metal, with a some doom - epic doom - influences... but nevertheless still great)... Anyway as you can figure out, there are 2 common types of Epic doom... Anyway you choose what you like!

Oh, and I forgot about another important band: The 3rd and the Mortal ... they probably fall into the gothic/doom category. and a lot of newer bands try to copy them (not only doom bands). For me the Tears Laid in Earth (1994) by The 3rd and the Mortal, and Autumnal's - Grey Universe (2006) have a lot in common! (You're welcome for a battle on this one! :))) )

OK...

Cheers!

Man, I just found this new doom band called God's Tower. They're not new (I think this album is from '97), but it's great traditional doom. I think they're billed as Pagan Doom Metal, but it's killer.

Pate, your riffs ****ing rule. I like how you made it so obvious that you wanted to emphasize the guitars. The drums and vocals are pretty low in the mix.

Haha thanks.

Any of you guys like Tiamat? I have Clouds and it's really good.

Haha, that looks pretty good. Did you use a roller? If not, that's even better with just using your hands. It seems compact as well, which I've noticed saves the most weed when burned.

You could invest in a roller though, they're really worth it. I believe they're like $2.50 here and they help a lot. Overall that should burn fine, 'cause I've rolled much worse and they've worked fine.

looks pretty good, you should strengthen the 'tip' by making a jerkoff-like move on a hard surface with the joint after rolling it (your knuckle might do). Also, try to roll more tightly, but that's mostly practice. Oh and when (if) you further in "rolling skills" you could try new kinds of leaves (my fav are Golden Smokings)

Downloading the new Worship.

And the cover is ****ing awesome.

I'm expecting the album art to be quite good on this release, as the distro I've purchased it through is selling it more expensive than the rest of their stock. Apparently it's due to the wholesale rate they paid for it, which was due to it's "exotic layout".

I'll see when it arrives I suppose.

I edited a comment about Katatonia in as well up there.

Also,

Retired; I gave Black Bile a listen. Quite good on the first listen. I was actually listening to Elysian Blaze prior to it and they are very similar in what they are doing. Some different tones there, I guess, but if you like Black Bile then you'd probably like Elysian Blaze as well. May I suggest you obtain Levitating The Carnal for more of that Black/Funeral Doom type stuff, with a little clearer production.

The new stuff is nothing like the old.
The old stuff (first album) is depresive black, the stuff after is doom/death and after that they evolved in to the more shoe gaze-ish/depressive rock sound they have now.
Dance Of December Souls and Brave Murder Day are highly recommended.

yesterday i bought

Om - Pilgrimage
Neurosis - The Eye of every storm

digging both of what I've heard so far

had Om on before i went to sleep, was in my own little world for the first track and then a few minutes into the second track i almost farted a load out when it went super fuzzy loud!!

:p haha

The new Om is immense, it's my second favorite album of theirs right now. Conference of the Birds is just above it. I like the artwork too. I ordered/recieved that album about a month ago.

Seeing them live was immense.

Especially because right before they came on I went to go smoke a couple bowls :D

Dang, that sounds amazing. Hell, the sound guy played their new album on the system before Boris came on and that was immense enough!

Damn you! I'm so jealous of you for seeing them live. What kills me even more is that they even came to Chicago. But of course... they played at a 21+ venue. Which, sadly, is something that a lot of bands are doing nowadays.

I wanted to buy Holy Mountain on vinyl :-x

The bass tone live was ridiculous. My ears were ringing so bad for 3 days.

I think I would poo my pants with Om's live bass sound.

The best part was the drunk metalhead who was trying to head bang but kept wobbling and almost falling over.

I'm just now getting into this type of music.

A friend lent me the following;

Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Can’t remember which album.
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
Sleep - Holy Mountain and Dopesmoker

I already listened to Neurosis and ISIS although the latter I’m not really sure falls into the category even though it’s great to get stoned to. :thumb:

Nice list, you're off to a great start except that Godspeed You Black Emperor doesn't really fit with this.

He just played non-stop Kyuss for 8 hours every day at work.

It got a little better when I showed him Pandora, but of course the first thing he did was make a Kyuss radio station.

The Godspeed You! was just in with the mix, which is why I assumed it might fit into the genre. Is it what would be more classified as the post-rock, or post-metal (I'm not that up to date on genre names)?

Oh! I almost forgot Monster Magnet in that list, he let me borrow Monolithic Baby! too. Which I've not listened to as much as the others, I'm feeling Sleep and Electric Wizard more.

What are some other bands you guys suggest I should check out?

I'm going to have to say that Sleep’s Holy Mountain was much more preferable than Dopesmoker. The hour and few odd minutes song started droning on, with no breaks for the performers or listeners. I'd have to say though, it'd be pretty awesome to see and hear live.

I will. I'll either call up my friend in the morning and see if he has any of them, and if not I'll try and track them down on the internet but sometimes that seems a little too hit or miss to get good copies.

I've only heard their one album, Dopethrone and I found it's great music to zone out to and just nod your head with it. The lyrics are muddled and distorted, but it's not a bad thing it actually creates the atmosphere along with the sludgy simplistic riffs on guitar. It's really quite good, actually.

I never got into Electric Wizard. I heard Dopethrone a few years ago and thought it was boring. Perhaps I should give it another go, as at the time the only Doom I really liked was Candlemass and everyone seems to love that album.
