Has anyone heard the new Om CD yet ( Variations on a Theme ) ? I'm pretty excited for it, but I haven't been able to get it yet. I've heard a few samples from it, and it sounds really Dopesmoker/Jerusalem'ish , but sans-guitar with cooler vocals.

Their new stuff was highly dissappointing, man. I loved listening to songs like "Tension Head", and for a while it made me proud that a local band was getting so much attention, but Lullabies to Paralyze was just too...boring for me. I couldn't get into it.

EYEHATEGOD, Down and Crowbar, as much as I like them, aren't doom. They're more of a harder southern rock genre. I describe them as Southern rock with a heavy metal sound. Corrosion of Conformity could fall into the same catergory; they fuse punk, metal, and southern rock into their music. What COC CD did you get, 3rdPlanet?

Yeah, I agree. I keep hearing people call this QOTSA's "second album" and it pisses me off. Most people who are into QOTSA nowadays probably haven't even HEARD rated R.

From my brief meeting with Doom bands, I have deduced that the genre name is compltley off, as most Doom bands are influenced by Sabbath, and just make plain good old funs tunes...or I may be wrong.

Everyone should go listen to Subterranean Masquerade. A bit of a progressive symphonic doom super group.

It's more death metal really and not that representative of their later stuff. Of which Angel and the Dark River may be a good indication of their style.
Still doom death though.

Wow, you've heard of November's Doom as well? They're awesome.
Anyway, I don't know about the doom bands-months trend, but if you look at it, all of those bands with certain months in their names have months that occur during Fall (or autumn or whatever you want to call it), which is a pretty gloomy time of the year. So if you think about it, those names are perfect for doom bands.

Only got into doom because of Sabbath, but am big fan of Cathedral, Electric Wizard and My Dying Bride. Can Iron Monkey be classed as doom or stoner metal?
BTW Cathedral seemed to follow Sabbath in every way. i.e. going a bit soft on some later albums before turning heavier again on Endtyme.

Old Katatonia stuff, namely Brave

"The debut album from this low-end shuddering new doom group led by SPIRIT CARAVAN bassist DAVID SHERMAN, who has too much energy for just one band. An abrasive and ugly, doom-ridden powerhouse of raw and nasty ultra-heavy rock thunder produced by CHRIS KOSLOWSKI (Pentagram, Spirit Caravan, Internal Void, Obsessed). Some heavy-*** ****."

Searched the thread and didn't find anything, so have any of you heard of Earthride? I just found a little synopsis about their debut album, and it sounds like it might be good;
"The debut album from this low-end shuddering new doom group led by SPIRIT CARAVAN bassist DAVID SHERMAN, who has too much energy for just one band. An abrasive and ugly, doom-ridden powerhouse of raw and nasty ultra-heavy rock thunder produced by CHRIS KOSLOWSKI (Pentagram, Spirit Caravan, Internal Void, Obsessed). Some heavy-*** ****."
after reading that i went to the southernlord recording thingie site, and had a listen to an earthride song, its pretty **** good

I thought this was worthy enough news to justify bringing this thread back from dead.....
The original Revelation "Salvations Answer" line up have got back together to form a new band Against Nature - hear some stuff here:
http://www.myspace.com/againstnature
Salvation's Answer line-up
John Brenner: guitar, vocals
Bert Hall: bass
Steve Branagan: drums
I've yet to hear it as MySpace is blocked at work but anything with this line up just cannot fail to be amazing!

As promising as it sounds, i listened to the first song on MySpace and it wasnt really that good, but i shall listen to the others.
Seeing as im here i will recommened some new bands (well, new to me):
Porn (aka Men of Porn) with dale crover from melvins and billy anderson producer of bands like sleep, neurosis, orange goblin, cathedral. Quite hard to describe, sort of prog doom and strange in places.
YOB. Sort of like reverend bizarre crossed with electric wizard.
Warhorse. Similar to Thee Plague of Gentleman.
I just got my first Candlemass album. It's awesome.

Eyehategod is sludge for sure. I've heard Crowbar concidered sludge. They call themselves "doomcore" on their website. They aren't like most sludge bands though. Their stuff is too tight. Thanks for the recomendations though. I'll be sure and check them out.
Would sludge just be concidered a heavy sub-genre of stoner metal? It seems like it to me.

I'd love to but I only have it on vinyl and can't transfer it. It is ace though - sounds (as you may expect considering who wrote the songs) like a more upbeat Solstice. Not doom at all - more NWOBHM but still great songs. It comes up on Ebay quite often - well worth spending the money on.

If you like Robot Hive you'll like 'Blast Tyrant' and 'Pure Rock Fury'
Their first album"Transnational Speedway League" is more on their metal side
Their s/t is kinda spacey funk metal
The "Elephant Riders" album has a jazz sense to it
and "Jam Room" is jam band-ish

It's an interesting one because yes the genre Sabbath sound most like is doom. But yet they were also the first heavy metal band but metal has moved away from Sabbath while doom has stayed the closest to the original Sabbath blueprint. So maybe doom is just heavy metal and all the other stuff is different?
Also, would Paradise Lost qualify for inclusion too?
Doom/death maybe. The first album is just slow death metal and bloody good at that! Gothic is closer to Celtic Frost's Into the Pandemonium and from then on they were more like a gothic Metallica!
Still love the first two albums though.

hailing from rock city Newcastle, Australia, the boys have 11 mp3s up for free download on their website www.castroband.com , these are very early recordings, the band are currently working on a full length album for large scale distribution, which features much bigger guitars and fat grooving bass, driven by powerful percussion from Dave Tracey, one of the top youth drummers in the country, the album will be professionally mastered and feature a srting quartet on a song or two. keep an eye on www.castroband.com for breaking developments.

Jondur, you made the top 10 list for me when I asked in the Death Heads thread.
Here it is:
OK. You have to bear in mind that my tastes are quite restricted and this list will concentrate on old-school and epic doom.
In no particular order:
Solitude Aeturnus - Through the Darkest Hour (If you like Epicus then you'll love this)
Candlemass - Nightfall
Solstice - New Dark Age
St Vitus - V (I actually Prefer the self-titled debut but it's nigh on impossible to get hold of)
Trouble - The Skull
Pentagram - Day of Reckoning
Revelation - Frozen Masque
Penance - Spiritual Natural
The Obsessed - The Church Within
Count Raven - Destruction of the Void
As with the 'essential Death Metal albums' list this is a list of albums that I believe shaped the genre. They may not neccessarily be the best introduction to the genre.
If you like Epicus here are some other suggestions:
Isole - Forevermore
While Heaven Wept - Of Empires Forlorn
Other class albums:
Orodruin - Epicurean Mass
Reverend Bizarre - In the Rectory
The Gates of Slumber - The Awakening
Doctor Night

For all you New Orleans metal fans--
Life after Hurrican Katrina:
Jimmy Bower(Eyehategod,Superjoint Ritual, Down,Crowbar) is now living in a trailer with his relatives along with Down bandmate Pepper Keenan(Corrosion Of Conformity, Down) and his family. Kirk Windstein(Crowbar, Down,Valume Knob) stayed in New Orleans when the hurricane hit, but left eventually. Phil Anselmo(Down, Pantera, Superjoint Ritual)'s home near New Orleans was not affected by the hurricane, and neither was his barn where the record 'Down 2' was recorded. On the downside,Mike Williams of Eyehategod is missing and no one knows where he is.
And to Down fans, they will be recording a 'Down 3' according to Jimmy Bower, and it is supposed to be angrier than their previous albums.
Why I'm posting this in here? Cause Down is stoner metal, and I figured it would be pointless to make a thread about it.

Black Sabbath self-titled album is referred as the "birth" of doom metal... but it has nothing in common with the doom-sound, though.
Some Doom-bands uses harsh vocals, others don't. For me (sorry i am not an expert, so correct me if i am wrong) is very slow, sad and depressive music. There is even a subcategorie of doom-metal, called funeral-metal.
The best thing is to try out early Anathema (serenades, A silent enigma) or My Dying Bride... SunO))) is an extreme example for a doom-metal-band (the slowest band in the world, if you believe what ppl say...)

doom-metal.com is gay. Full of people asking if Autopsy or Opeth are doom. They're not.
Black Sabbath "Black Sabbath" has everything to do with the doom sound. All proper doom bands have that reference to their sound. Basically doom started with bands like Pentagram in the 70's then St Vitus, Trouble, The Obsessed, Candlemass in the 80's and then Solitude Aeturnus, Solstice, While Heaven Wept, Forlorn etc in the 90s.
The flag is still being held high by bands like The Gates of Slumber, Orodruin, Reverend Bizarre, Thee Plague of Gentlemen, Rising Dust, Warning, The River etc etc
MDB, Anathema etc just took the epicness of Candlemass and added it to slow death metal. That makes death/doom not doom.

Has anyone heard totimoshi? i really want their self titled album and knowone seems to them.
And with stoner rock
A lot of bands get classed as stoner cuz of the fuzz and wah effects on their guitar,That's usually what they have in common.
What my dying bride songs do you reccomend?I ignored them because their name sounds Emo lol
and also anyone heard Sheavy?but think their great but they sound slightly to influenced by Sabbath, and when i say slightly thats an understatement

You really should buy it if you liked it. Ola from I hate Records works really hard to release great doom bands. He won't be able to do it if people don't actually buy the records.
Loads of great stuff on that label - The Gates of Slumber, Burning Saviours, Centurion's Ghost.

Despite the fact that on the back of their album it says "We hate trend, we hate corporate attitude, we hate the word 'stoner', death to false stoners! LET THERE BE DOOM" and the fact they sound like heavy sabbath with gruff vocals

Yeah, despite that.
I haven't seen their actual album, so I haven't read what they have to say with their broken English, and they sounded to me like EW. Got a problem?

No, not at all. I just thought I'd point out they reject the idea of being a "stoner" band. And they don't sound that much like EW. But all the same, yes I've heard them and I like them.

Yeah, I suppose they don't sound a lot like EW, but they struck me less as doom because when I think of doom I think slow, slow music, most of which doesn't capitalize on being groovy.

Moz Ingram (Solstice)
Simon Matravers (ex-Solstice)
Stoy (Seer's Tear)

Heres an old interview with Teh Wizard!!! :)
so if there's any mistakes, don't blame me
ELECTRIC WIZARD. Interview with Jus Osborn. Probably one of the most interesting email interviews I have ever done, I had the results mailed back to me from England, wherein resides one rather angry group of musicians. I guarantee you've never heard doom metal as ferocious and pissed off as this three piece, and the interview below will reveal some of the reasons for their hostility.
As our readers know, your newest album "Come My Fanatics" has been re-released along with the first album remixed. Why was the decision made to offer this as a 2 CD set and why did you feel the need to remix the first album? What was done differently on the re-release?
We re-released "Come My Fanatics" because the first time it was released the distribution company went bust about 2 weeks after it came out, so hardly any copies made it into the stores, which was totally annoying because we got all these amazing reviews but nobody could find a copy. The 2 CD set was the idea of the new distributors and we thought it was kinda cool because it would come out as the price of a single disc. Also we got a chance to release the original Electric Wizard mix of the first album. This is the original rougher, heavier mix that we did in the studio but was originally rejected by Rise Above and remixed by Paul Johnson. But now Rise Above have realized that the Wizard are the only ones who decide what mix to use.
Making an observation then, between the first and second albums it sounds almost entirely like a different band. Were there things done on the first album that you didn't want to repeat the second time around? Lots of the guitar riffs on "Come My Fanatics" were much heavier and more distorted, is this the result of the band trying to attain a different sound?
I don't really know what happened, maybe we got too ****ed up! Though the first album was mostly crappy old songs from my first band but "Come..." was 100 percent Wizard. Also on the first album we had it all rehearsed before we went into the studio but on the second one we decided to record it all live and write the songs and jam them out in the studio. I think we were also very screwed with drug abuse, on the first day we couldn't find Mark so we had to drive all over trying to find him and some of his mates said he was lost on acid somewhere but we found him in the woods and he was just messy. So we dragged him down to the studio to record his parts which led to all three of us going on a three day binge of acid, grass, speed and vodka, these three days produced all the basic tracks for the album and has now become the routine for all Wizard recording sessions. We always wanted to be the heaviets and loudest band in the world but not in some cliched way, but a genuine outpouring of total doom and hate.
I noticed that several songs are played slower on the second disc than on the first one. In an interview I did with Sleep some years ago, they said it was a lot harder to play slower live than at regular speed. Do you find this to be true, and what is an Electric Wizard live show like?
To most people's horror we play even slower live. I love totally crushing riffs live if you hold the notes long enough you get this kinda massive swell which threatens to crack the venue walls. I remember seeing Candlemass when I was younger and I was just amazed at how awesome the slow riffs sounded, it seemed like a sonic deathray! Yeah, it is harder to play slower live but it just proves we can play better than everyone else. The main thing that surprises people is that we don't play the tracks the same way as on the album, which no other bands do but when you listen to all the old seventies bands they used to jam out the songs for hours because they were so shot on drugs which we are as well. The better the drugs the better the concert! And it is true that sometimes we don't play if we can't score any decent weed. An Electric Wizard show is baiscally unpredictable, but always very heavy. Sometimes people say we come across like a punk band because of our attitude on stage because we don't pu on a proper rock show, so because of our reputation we get punks, metallers, skaters and all sorts of freaks at our gigs. Do you remember the British punk band Doom? They always came to our gigs because they think we kill live with no rock star poses. We did a gig with Chaos U.K. once and they were pissed off because all their punk fans thought we kicked their old punk asses, ha ha!
Many of your songs tend to be quite lengthy, which is perfect for the stoner that wants to concentrate on the sounds, do you feel that only stoners can appreciate a long tune? Personally, if a song has great instrumentation the longer it gets the more I get to enjoy the music. Especially with Hacienda, their instrumental songs are written so well I almost never want them to end! Going way back, the Beatles did that same thing with the endless riffs on 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)' from their Abbey Road album.
I agree. Our songs are so long because we're so stoned when we play them. I think it's definitely a stoner/drug thing because straights think we're too boring and too slow but only dopers come to our gigs now and they love to hang out for hours on extended 20 minute jams. When we rehearse we just play hour long jams and the more it goes on the more you become lost in the music until eventually reality ceases to exist and only the Wizard is real and life is gone. Death to reality!
Speaking of the herb though, there wasn't much mention of the green leaf in any of the songs. As many of our readers know, we here at V.O.D. are very pro- hemp and we were curious about what good herb is floating around at the time? Do you prefer using the bong, pipe, or papers, and what do you guys think of High Times Magazine? Also, on the latest Iron Monkey CD, some guys mentioned that some English people couldn't grow very good pot because of the climate; something to do with lots of cold and dreary days (though I assume they were also half joking). Care to put any of thoe rumours to rest?
The Wizard only smokes the finest homegrown Dorset buds. We grow our own dope under lights so we always have fat buds! Iron Monkey are stupid northeners who can't grow decent weed, ha ha! The south of England produces very fine weed, come over for a smoke sometime and find out! We prefer to use the righteous bong and we NEVER mix it with tobacco as has been rumoured by some American bands, also we use various hardcore devices such as "The Waterfall," "The Lung" and the universally reknown "Bucket." Various bands have tried to challenge us at toking but we always kill those wimpy fags, I've seen Orange Goblin fall to the floor many a time we stoned them up hard! Only Brutal Truth could keep up with us, it's wierd because all these bands in England call themselves stoner rock but they don't even smoke any pot! High Times has some cool growing tips but I don't like the wimpy hippy stuff. They should do a Sleep special every month!
I was curious as to some of your influences, besides the obvious Black Sabbath, on the music you make? I did hear a slight Louisiana sound in the vein of Eyehategod and Crowbar so I was wondering if there were any other styles of music you were into? Also, I'd like to get your reaction on a couple of other bands in this genre, namely Iron Monkey, Roachpowder, and my all time favorites Hawkwind.
We love all heavy and original music, the Louisiana bands too. Electric Wizard's favorite bands are Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Blue Cheer, Celtic Frost, Witchfinder General, Sleep, Darkthrone, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Cream, Slayer, Pentagram, Bathory, Trouble, Earth, Burning Witch, the Melvins, etc. Basically anything that stops the voice in my head which tells me to do bad things. Iron Monkey totally rock and we got trashed with those dudes a few times but they've split up now. I might be doing some project stuff with the drummer soon like the slowest band ever or something. I don't know of Roachpowder so I can't say anything. As for Hawkwind, I love their early stuff with Lemmy but the later stuff is gay. But they are kind of an institution in England and everyone goes and sees them live, they're still cool live and everyone in the crowd shares their drugs around and it's a great party like in the 60's. I've seen them about 6 times.
'Mountains Of Mars' was a beautiful instrumental, but there doesn't seem to be any other styles like this on any of your other albums that I've heard. Was that a one shot thing or will we hear more mellow stuff like this on future works? Speaking of those, are there any plans for a new album and what might it be like? Tell us what type of bands you consider to be perfect bands to listen to "under the influence."
We do a lot of mellower jams at rehearsals but it seems we are always pissed and have a negative attitude when we're in the studio. I think it's kind of a myth that when you're stoned you want to listen to wimpy Led Zeppelin crap, I hate it. We listen to Bathory and Darkthrone even on acid! If I want to relax I prefer ambient music to acoustic stuff. We will record a more mellow track if we think it's appropriate, if it makes you feel like you're lost on some screwed up alien world NOT look at the lovely flowers they're so trippy man... UUUGGHH! Our new album will be called "Dopethrone" and we are working on it now! It's gonna be the heaviest and most original stoner doom album ever recorded in human history! We guarantee that even if you've never taken drugs you'll experience the baddest trip of your miserable life! Electric Wizard are the perfect band to listen to under the influence, if you can handle it!

Finally, any chance you will tour the States? And also, I noticed being on Lee Dorrian's label (from Cathedral fame) your first album artwork looked strikingly similar to a few of Cathedral's and the Lake Of Tears album "Crimson Cosmos." Is it that this artist only does album covers for those doing doom metal or trippy psychedelic music?
We are going to tour the U.S. very soon, it's our total dream! It will probably be with Goatsnake as we did an awesome British tour with them and we really got along well. It was a great show for the fans because we're both total doom live but in a different way. Also, we heard American chicks are suckers for English accents! We used the same artist as Cathedral on the first album but we were sick when we saw it because it's totally weak hippy crap, we asked for a huge dragon dripping blood with naked chicks and stuff like the cover of "Savage Sword Of Conan" or something, not that stuff. I mean she hasn't even got her tits out and there's a queer dolphin on it! (Luckily this is cut off on the re-release). Since then we've used our own stuff! Check out the new "Supercoven" CD on Southern Lord Records out now with new tracks and cover art for the U.S. only. It is SOOOO heavy! If you're into Death, Black, Doom, Stoner, Punk, whatever we guarantee you will get on your knees and pray to the Wizard!
Hope you enjoy it

I like flight of the behemoth. Famous noise-dude merzbow makes some neat contributions to it with a pleasantly varied sound.
Do you guys prefer your doom with clean vocals or harsh? Generally, I'm a fan of clean, but there's something very imposing about slow, sludging riffs mixed with bear-ish, isis-like vocals.

His point is that doom isn't supposed to be happy, the opposite in fact, and therefore as a doomster stoner rock does nothing fo him. Kyuss isn't all that angry, not when compared to early Cathedral and the like.

All depends on the music, but generally it makes no difference for me. Bongzilla sound so awesome with the black metal vocals, and then you get Electric Wizard with the clean vocals with that weird effect over them. The overall effect is the same, really.
Then you have My Dying Bride, who switch between growling and clean whining. Both are as effective as the other.

You see, what you're missing there is the value of a full stop. They separate sentences so different points can be made. Reread the quote - stoner is too happy clappy (read groovey). FULL STOP. It often has a 'southern feel', see Kyuss as a text book example. Anyway Stoner doesn't have the feel of despair etc that doom has. It has a happy feel - I don't care whether the lyrics are happy or not - the music is.
Re clean vs growled. Well Growls have no place in doom. Compare the majesty of Rob Lowe from Solitude Aeturnus to Aaron Stainthorpes whining.

Ok, question from moi, again with the Wizard;
I'm gradually downloading Dopethrone (don't judge me, Mum won't let me purchase anything online), and I got a version of the title track which is 10:35. But the one on the album is reportedly 20:48. It's not cut off or anything, it's a full proper song, and it has the correct lyrics. I dunno.

During a recent QOTSA concert, John Garcia came up during the encore and peformed Thumb, Hurricane, and Supa Scoopa and the Mighty Scoop with QOTSA. I wish i was there so bad. If Kyuss ever does a reunion tour, ill **** myself out of excitement.
I've got the audio of the concert, and the video of hurricane
It's nothing special
If Kyuss got back together it would kill them, the point of them splitting up was to preserve what greatness they had ;)

Reverend Bizarre is the only doom metal I've heard and I like it. And early Katatonia. Recommend some more.

Has anyone here heard Bumsnogger? One of the best Doom metal bands I've ever heard. Period.
