My first Doom album was the Pentagram best of Turn To Stone (or something like that) I usually never buy best of's but that was cheap and had a fair few songs on it. If you can find it I do recommend it as an intro, also anything by Candlemass or Saint vitus.

If you want something a little more accessible that's still classified as doom, pick up some Swallow The Sun. The Morning Never Came and Hope are terrific albums.

A doubleCD might be a bit too much of the same for me.

The other band you simply HAVE to check out is ARGUS. Now this is non-negotiable. This is heavy metal of the highest order. If this band are not the best thing you've heard in years then there's something wrong with you. Even lefties will enjoy this band! With the exception of the Blessed Ronnie James Dio, the singer, Butch, is my favourite singer of all time. I was actually really dissapointed when I saw Swallow the Sun :(

They played all their songs perfectly, but it was just...boring. They lacked any crowd interaction and even though I really like their studio material they were painfully bland live. Made me a bit sad :(

I guess poor was too strong a word. More average. Doom often relies on strong, distinctive vocals (you know the kind of people I'm talking about), and World Below just don't have that.

Sunn O))) is excellent live although I haven't enjoyed listening to them on CD since seeing them. They played in this tiny maybe 100 capacity church so the sound was great and clear even a couple meters away from their massive stacks.
