Well, I guessed that, I was just interested in what sort of music store Wino would go to. Wow that sounded a lot creepoer than it meant to be.
Drawing Down The Sun is one of the best Doom albums I've heard.

don't you think that Anathemas song "Deep" is one of their best?
What album is it on?
I've only got Pentecost III, Serenades, Crestfallen and The Silent Enigma.
Can't go past Pentecost, that's a classic. Mine Is Yours to Drown In is a ripper.
This thread is for stoner and doom metal, not just "stoner/doom metal"Yeah, but why were these genres ever grouped together as a thread in the first place?
can someone post some music by the gates of slumber again?

They just got added to Wacken :)

Yeah, I like the vocals. Very good album.
Yeah, but why were these genres ever grouped together as a thread in the first place?
yeah if anything i thought that stoner would go more with sludge than doom.
Sludge and doom are very close as well.

You aren't the internet police. Piss off yourself.
No I'm not but I have experienced being in a band and trying to get the money together to record and release music. For example, the first MCD I did with one band sold well and the money we made from that allowed us to go to Academy Studios with Mags and record another one. The second MCD got much better reviews, more people came to the gigs, more people were talking about us and raving about the CD but yet somehow we sold less. What happened? Three years and Soulseek.
I know many people who run small labels (you know, the labels that we rely to release the music we love - not Nuclear Blast etc) and they've all told me how much sales have gone down and how much they're struggling to make enough money to release records now.
This stuff really gets to me - to me its the equivalent of seeing some pretty flowers in a garden, ripping them out of the ground to take home - yes now you may have some pretty flowers but next time you go back there won't be any flowers. Crap analogy maybe, but if you love the music then you really have to support it.
I picked on Txus then partly as a joke because if you don't buy "Drawing down the Sun" I don't get any royalties!
Roy: I apologise if I misunderstood you. I wholeheartedly agree that Myspace is gayer than Elton John's favourite vase and wish bands would go back to having proper websites. I reckon you can take a risk with The Gates of Slumber though - if you like proper heavy metal with doomy elements, cues from Manowar and Cirith Ungol then I promise you will like them.
i understand. my interest though is not to steal music. i just wanted to hear something before i buy it and it is hard when they only have one place for clips and that place doesn't work for me.
i'm not one of these people that just downloads all and puts it on their Ipod. i have dial-up and no mp3 player. so most of my stuff comes from actual albums.
rippa32
05-01-2007, 08:40 AM
I totally understand what you mean. I often download the odd song to get a feel and if I was a recording artist that would never bother me. But I have seen people download entire albums and discographies at a time (even dial-up for one of them) and it really pisses me off, and they reason that they have enough money already. But doom metal bands and other bands that arn't so mainstream are vary rarely "rich".
Jondur
05-01-2007, 08:49 AM
But then again there artists who happily offer up their music for free download and in those cases you should go for your life. And here's a great example:
http://www.againstnature.us/BH/Artists/Argus/Argus.htm
Argus are the new band of ex-Penance vocalist Butch Ballich. Not wholly doom but all heavy metal with doomy elements and massive vocals. Enjoy!!

Yeah, I like them, very good stuff.
I enjoy the fact that it's not just celtic stuff, but also some straight up metal.
A lot of bands that wander off into a certain style (like Celtic, Gothic etc) seem to put the fact that they're metal in second place and just play with stylistic elements for the sake of it and not because it fits the music.

I've been traveling quite alot already, been to Bergen, Stavanger and next week going to Oslo and in June to Trondheim.
But it's really great. I'm having the time of my life.
And then to think, one third of my time here is already done. :(
How are you doing? :)
Ah, I'm jealous of you.
Lillehammer is great, I went snowboarding there and had a blast.
Bergen is really cool how the village is right on the side of the mountains and the fjords are beautiful. I played in a basketball tournament there.
Oslo is where I lived! Let me know when you go I'll tell you the best places to go.

Has anybody seen Boris or Isis live? They are playing in London in July and I'm debating whether to go or not.
I love both bands in moderation, but I'm a bit worried Isis will attract an audience full of wankers seeing as they're headlining. I'll probs go anyway, depends how I'm doing for money.
I'd definantly go. Do Isis have annoying fans or something?
Oh I dunno really, I just hate shows where the whole fanbase is full or obnoxious 'metalheads' who don't allow any room for people to stand close to the band and not got involved in their testosterone fuelled shoving games. I know to expect a bit of pushing and stuff going to a gig like that, but I'd like to be able to at least concentrate on the gig and not sacrifice too much position.

If all of their songs sounded like Broken off of To Welcome The Fade, they would be good. Unfortunately, neither of these things is very true.
Their newest album, The Novella Reservoir is very kickass. I like TNR and The Pale Haunt Departure more than TWTF.

I'm trying to educate myself about this genre so any help would be appreciated. Has anyone heard the new Poison The Well? Because it has this vibe/mood to it that makes me think of Doom Metal. I know they aren't a doom metal band, but it sounds like they may be influenced by the genre. Any thoughts?
the2stranger
05-19-2007, 09:37 AM
From what I remember Poison The Well is more hardcore/emo stuff.
The fact that it has a somber sound doesn't persay make it doom metal or doom metal related.
Also I've never heard any reference to metal in PTW's music.
If you want to be educated on some doom metal check out Candlemass and the Cathedral recommendations above.
If you want some sub-sub genre recommendations let me know.
Lots of good doom/death, depressive black, drone, funeral, stoner and sludge to check out too.

12 Days Of Rain is Katatonia worthy stuff.
Dance Of December Souls is becoming my favorite Katatonia album, simply amazing.
Nepenthe
05-19-2007, 12:09 PM
It's been my favorite since the first time I heard it. It has the most amazing atmosphere of any release of any genre of any time.
I really dislike Brave Murder Day though, Mikael's 'cleaner' growls totally take away from the atmosphere. Renske's tortured screams are a huge part of what makes December Souls so mystic.
I don't share the same point of view with the Miakel "cleaner" growls since I love that album, and I think it's perfect with Mikael and blah blah blah. Still, DODS is great..probably my favorite Katatonia album but I prefer the new era as a whole.

Mikael's growl is just too by the books. Yeah, it is very good, but there's nothing different about it. Renske has a very unique voice, and it just fits perfectly with the music.
Velvet Thorns (Of Drynwhyl) has to be the best thing Katatonia has ever done man \m/

Gateways To Bereavement, In Silence Enshrined, and Without God are my favorite. Elohim Meth is very good too, for an interlude.
Without God is very good too. I want a Katatonia shirt with the old logo :(
Nepenthe
05-19-2007, 12:34 PM
Without God is definitely Renske's best vocal performance, and the perfect example of how much better his voice fits into the old Katatonia atmosphere than Mikael's deep and clean growls.

BP is really weird, they have a female vocalist, but for once it's not that annoying. :p
And it's just ugly and huge music.
I'm kind of curious about the new Fallen too, it'ssupposed to have a female vocalist too, but I prefer the low bassy voice on the debut by a longshot.
