Electronic kit as in the full kits, or the little pads?

(cheap) softsynths and programmed drums are a good thingto get the outline of song.
But you always loose the dynamics, which is really ashame.
Tha's also why I'm not really fond of triggers.
But then again, some bands like Darkspace can get away with programmed drums, but that's not really the kind of music that fits in to your sound Pate.
The electronic kit is a good recommendation though.
Or program drums and run them through the Drumkit from Hell program.
The samples there are also really good, one of thebest programmed drums I've ever heard.

Or just learn to play the drums, like the most basic rhythms. It's not so hard.

My brother is thinking about buying an old drumkit.
What program do you use for the drums now Pate?

lolz.
I use DKFH samples, but I need to learn how to utilize more of them. As is, I usually have the drum sounds at one intensity. I need to learn how to utilize the softer and harder hits instead of just using one hit.
I can play drums...kinda. Not well enough for what I want to do though. That, and I don't have a decent way to mic my drums.

So, I'm starting a Stoner/Doom/Progressive band.
This is a hughe change for me, I've always played Death Metal, Technical Death and Thrash.
This idea came to my mind when I realized that there wasn't any Stoner or Doom bands in my hometown, so I like to deliver something new and experimental.
The band consist in:
Me: Bass, Vocals, Keyboards, Additional Guitars, Synths.
My friend: Guitar, Drums.
My friend is a really talented guitarist, but he only plays thrash so this is new to him, but we are gonna start playing music I wrote.
Mike: What program do you use the DKFM in? Please don't say FL.

Drumkit From Mars? Drumkit For Men? :p
I use Garageband. Which is helpful to the other 3 people on the whole forum who use Macs as well. :smash:
lol typo
Damn. I hate Fruity Loops. I'd prefer to use the DKFH through GP, but that doesn't work. :(
Shattered_Future
04-04-2007, 08:24 PM
I dunno, my friend has Fruity Loops and you can do some pretty good stuff with that program. It's kinda hard to use, but once you learn it works well.
Fruity Loops is pretty sweet.
I don't think it's hard to use, it's just very rigid, whereas with GP I can do whatever rhythms and note durations I want.
Shattered_Future
04-04-2007, 09:00 PM
Yeah, that was a problem I had too. Fruity Loops is mad rigid.
I am listening to Senmuth right now. Very cool. It's labeled as "instrumental ethnic doom metal". Whatever the hell that means.

you should maybe learn to write stoner / doom then, its not that simple to change over from one to the other
bad reason to start a band in my opinion, shouldnt you start it because you love the type of music so much?

I know I'm a moaning old fart but the issue isn't really the drum sounds it's the beats. the transitions between sections to be precise. A real drummer just wouldn't play like that.
Which is why an electronic kit wouldn't solve the sounds (as by and large they still don't perfectly recreate the sound of a real kit) but they would add the feel and 'realness' factor.
And if you want real drums, stop worrying about micing up so much - this isn't technical death metal - you want your drums to sound like drums. Stick a large piece of plywood on the floor, set your drums up on it, stick one mic in the kick drum and set two overheads up. You'll be surprised by the results.

I'm looking in to e-kits, but they're too damned expensive. I may end up with one of the little pad things.

If money is your main problem buy a real kit. You can get them dirt cheap

Bastard. Never seen them live but I know they'll be fantastic. Do me a favour and don't tell me about afterwards! I handle jealousy badly!
People always play the electric kits at work as if they are real drums, it's funny to see the drum counter guys freaking out.

Khanate is pretty excellent, the vocals are so tortured.
TOTLRTD is great too.
As far as other drone is concerned I'm reallyenjoying the new Nadja.
So relaxing.
Any one heard of Orthodox? They're a spanish drone band,I guess you could classify them a bit as HEX: Or Printing in the Infernal Method by EARTH, bt with some ethnic sounds too.
I wasn't that impressed on the first listen ,but might want to give it another spin.

They lack some power imo.

Vitus is amazing. Born Too Late is a ****ing anthem.
I've been on a total Wino kick this week. I should have like 20 plays each of Vitus, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan and The Hidden Hand. That man is a god.
I have yet to hear The Hidden Hand and Spirit Caravan off that list :(
Sup Mike?
Nothing much, I'm really bored atm...but I'm going to a friends party tonight, should be good. Bunch of stoners :p
What about you? How are grim lands treating you?
The Hidden Hand is really great. They're a bit more psychedelic than Wino's other stuff. I suggest you get their new one, The Resurrection of Whiskey Foote (badass title right thurr).
Spirit Caravan is closer in sound to The Obsessed and Vitus. Their EP Dreamwheel is quite good, but the great find is The Last Embrace. It's a comp, that happens to be both of their albums plus a few unreleased tracks.
Sounds great, mind uploading that Spirit Caravan comp for me, Li? :)
I just found a torrents for the Hidden Hand \m/
I refuse to upload it, but I have a link. :p I'll rep it to you.
Actually....it's on The Cathedral. But it might be mega though. If it is I'll upload it later today.

Trouble are probably the second best doom band ever. You need the first one (Psalm 9) and The Skull. They are essential.
I'll start looking for those.

I'll be there. I know Warning, Against Nature and The River are touring the rest of the UK as well (mainly because I'm fairly sure at least one of the bands well end up at my house) but the addition of Pagan Altar and The Lamp of Thoth means that a trip to the accursed capital is in order.
I also have VERY high hopes for the special guest.
I heard Lamp of Thoth's demo and thought it was very good. I've still yet to hear the new Warning though.
Any idea who the special guest might be?

I just got back from RoadBurn 2005, it was crushing. Acid King got everybody softend up so Om could drive a buldozer over the audience for Neurosis to sledgehammer everybody over the head and what was left standing was smashed by Black Cobra.
King Buzzo owned the room friday. Big Business/Melvins make a great combo.
This was like my Woodstock :D.
http://www.roadburn.com I bet you're all jealous. The location of the camping was in a freakin' Safari park. It being organised in Holland meant cheap, readily available, quality weed.
Two days of solid bliss.

So which band was your favorite? I bet seeing Om was pretty badass.

04-22-2007, 05:27 PM
Definitely Om. Seeing Cisneros and Hakius in the flesh... too good to be true. They were so very crushing, I almost became their music :D. Acid King was the surprise of the festival for me. I liked them on record but live they were so much better. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. Big Business and the Melvins were far more powerfull than I expected going in and Black Cobra gave far more than I gave 'm credit for.
Pelican was also sweet but I didn't see enough of the gig due to time constraints (only saw the last half hour or something).
Next year, three days. :D If we're lucky we'll have a Sleep reunion by then ;).

I saw them on that tour as well. This time they were better!
I also 'got' Centurion's Ghost for the first time. Every other time I've seen them I just haven't been able to get into them but this time... well I'm a definite convert. Yes, they may have death metal (well almost hardcore) vocals but they have the doom feeling in spades. With the demise of Thee Plague of Gentlemen, could Centurion's Ghost be the heaviest band in the world? It's possible.
Witchsorrow were the opening band and they are definitely ones to watch. With bands like Witchsorrow, Lamp of Thoth, CG, The River, Unsilence, Warning etc I reckon the UK has thee best doom scene in the world. Discuss.

Seriously right, there's no excuse for this. You want to hear them before you buy something - well go on their myspace site. There's about 4 songs there to hear. If you like them then buy an album. You're not ripping off EMI here - you're stealing from a small underground label that relies on the sales of each album to finance the next one.
If you can't afford to buy an album, well, I can't afford a Porsche so I'm not going to go and steal one.
