I really enjoy Bongzilla as well as the vocals.
They fit the atmospthere really well, somehow.
I should get more Bongzilla.

I guess the closest comparison would be to Electric Wizard, but even more fuzzed out.

I must say as much as I love EW, I like the production on Bongzilla better.
Cause the fuzzed-ness on EW can sometimes get in the way of the actual music.
Still both bands are as cool as the bees knees.

Hahaha,
I've never been high whilst listening to Stoner.
Still it's always good and a nice beer fits the music just as well..
That reminds me, I'm gonna grab one right now. ;)
I'm playing Saturnus - Veronika Decides To Die now.
Great album.
Nice doom/death, with a MDB influence, still quite original because of the spacey sometimes even Floyd like guitarwork.

listen to Bad Vision and Electric MachineJust to let you know about that local music thing I mentioned ages ago, it didn't really turn out like planned. The magazine still has little bits written about Suns of Thunder and Bomb the Sun but it's mainly concentrated on other styles of music. There is an associated gig at Cardiff union on the 18th of March which Sun of Thunder are playing amongst some other cool bands (but none of them are really stoner or anything).

Storm In is pretty cool, too. The speedy approach is cool and they pull it off really well. Sadly the song is only 28 seconds long, hah. The Last Force is a little bit up-tempo, but not in the same respect.
When I mentioned the vocals, I just meant they sound a little...I don't want to say poppy, but the ultra-clean vocals seem to stick out behind all the distortion and whatnot.
Bartender
03-13-2007, 10:07 PM
Oh, fair enough. I don't mind the vocals all that much in that respect, but there are a couple of horribly failed squealy/shrieky moments that make me wince. Reminds me The Chasm.

Legendary Swedish doomsters CANDLEMASS celebrated their 20th anniversary with a huge party at Stockholm's Kolingsborg last night (Saturday, March 31). CANDLEMASS performed with no less than seven (!) different vocalists — including the band's former singers Johan Langquist and Tomas Vikström, plus the group's latest addition, Robert Lowe of SOLITUDE AETURNUS. The complete list of vocalists that performed with the band last night is as follows:
Johan Langquist (ex-CANDLEMASS)
Tomas Vikström (ex-CANDLEMASS)
Mikael Åkerfeldt (OPETH)
Mats Levén (KRUX, THERION, ex-YNGWIE MALMSTEEN)
Robert Lowe (CANDLEMASS, SOLITUDE AETURNUS)
Tony Martin (ex-BLACK SABBATH)
Janne Christoffersson (GRAND MAGUS, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS)
The group's setlist was as follows:
01. The Dying Illusion (Tomas Vikström)
02. Bewitched (Tomas Vikström)
03. Dark are the Veils of Death (Tomas Vikström)
04. Where the Runes Still Speak (Tomas Vikström)
05. Ebony Throne (Tomas Vikström)
06. Well of Souls (Janne Christoffersson)
07. Black Dwarf (Mats Levén)
08. At the Gallows End (Mikael Åkerfeldt)
09. [New Song] (Robert Lowe)
10. Samarithan (Robert Lowe)
11. Mirror Mirror (Robert Lowe)
12. Crystal Ball (Johan Langquist)
12. Demon's Gate (Johan Langquist)
13. Under the Oak (Johan Langquist)
14. A Sorcerer's Pledge (Johan Langquist)
Encore:
15. Witches (Tony Martin)
16. Bullfest (Tomas Vikström)
17. Solitude (Langquist/Vikström/Lowe)
Check out video footage from last night's gig at YouTube.

Cheers man. I'll let you know what I think of it.
Well, for starters you will burn in the same circle of hell as Six Feet Under for crimes against Black Sabbath. ;)
Death Vox in Sabbath songs? that's just wrong!
I quite like it in general (not the Sabbath medley, the album). You have some good riffs and the general mood is there. To be honest, there's a lot that needs improving - programmed drums are almost always a let down and some of the keyboards are a bit honky, and in general you still need to find your own sound (and then stick to it!:p). I don't think the vocals fit - good, clean vocals would add so much to the music (I actually like the growls, would sound ace in a old Samael or Rotting Christ style black metal band!), with the growls it makes everything sound a bit monotonous and dull, which means you actually have to listen really hard to pick out the dynamics of the music (and let's face it - most people won't make the effort).
But on the positive side, like I said, there's some good riffs and they're well played. You have a good understanding of mood and dynamics and can obviously play well. There is real potential there so stick with it man and I'd like to hear your next one.
Hehee. Thanks man. This is basically the first harsh, constructive criticism we've gotten for any of our 3 albums. :thumb:
The vocals: My cleans are abysmal, so those were our only choice. We've been looking for a singer and drummer for 4 years, and have had no luck. :( The album we're working on now will hopefully feature a mix of clean and harsh.
The drums: I completely think the drum sound sucks, but we don't have a real drummer, and that is the only program that gives me the flexibility I want in programming. So the tradeoff for flexibility is the crappy sounds.
The keyboards/synths in the opening track: I've heard plenty about how bad they are, but again, it was my only choice.
The medley: It was just for fun, and each track was recorded in one take. Considering those things, I think it turned out pretty well. :p
Jondur
04-04-2007, 09:24 AM
Hey I completely understand why you've made those choices and we've all been there.
Drummers and singers are always the hardest to find so that leaves you with one option: learn to play the drums. Even the worst drummer will provide more feel than the best drum programmer. If space and noise are an issue get an electronic kit (I have one - it's ace and I'm going to record with it as well so we don't have to mess around with mics for hours). If anything the slightly overcomplicated programming in places detracts from the music at the moment.
Stick with it though - I liked what you've done (even if my review seemed a bit harsh) and I reckon you've got real potential.
