So does anybody here know what tuning Cathedral use for the guitar? I wanted to learn North Berwick Witch Trials but the tab gave a tuning ive never seen before BEADF#B. Im wondering if the guy doing the tabs stuffed up, or if cathedral use 7 strings and got confused.

EDIT: Oh silly me, just realised thats 2 and half steps down from standard.

Shattered_Future
12-24-2006, 08:18 AM
That's like tuning a 7 string uses, cept it's on a 6 and the 2nd string is dropped half a step more.

It's also great for using your strings as a guitar strap. They're so loose you can pick the guitar up by them.

Electric Wizard is sweet.

Thoughts on the new Swallow The Sun? I don't think it's as good as TMNC, but it's a ton better than Ghosts Of Loss. It's got the writing of TMNC mixed with the production values of the second, and it has some new stuff thrown in as well.

I think Forevermore is better only for the fact that Throne Of Void doesn't distinguish itself enough.

I actually listened to the first 2 tracks off of Black1 last night, and I'm left with 2 overriding feelings. The first track was ridiculously awesome, scary as all hell, and had killer atmosphere, and the second track had 1 riff for 6 minutes. Which I can't stand.

I'm listening to something I got off of that doom blog...The Prophecy. Tis pretty sweet.

I'm not that impressed with the new Isole so far. Maybe it's because I am still in the thrall of the new Solitude Aeturnus or possibly because there aren't any real standout songs like "The Watcher" off Forevermore.

Stoner Rock was the most interesting form of rock n roll since the early 70's. Finally, musicianship was held at a premium. These bands just flat out jammed. Unfortunately, because that was deemed uncommercial, few people have heard of them. Check out these classic recordings:

KYUSS - Blues for the Red Sun
FU MANCHU - In Search of...
SLEEP - Holy Mountain
ORANGE GOBLIN - Time Traveling Blues
NEBULA - Into the Center
ATOMIC BITCHWAX - I
KARMA TO BURN - Karma to Burn

The cool thing about Swallow The Sun is that they don't drag their songs at ultra-slow tempos, so it's alot more accesible to people who aren't fans of doom. But they never sacrifice the gloomy and depressive/dark feel that doom is known for.

Morgion are one of the few death/doom bands I listen to. I only Solinari, which is a good album. The production and atmosphere is excellent. The packaging (I know that this isn't a primary concern but helps with the overall experience) is also sublime.

If you're interested check out the song "Canticle"

I guess Mourning Beloveth (Ireland) would be another good band to check out if you're into this death doom type stuff.

And if you can find them Decomposed were an ace band.

Morgion is one of my favourite doomdeath bands.

Cloaked By Ages, Crowned In Earth is a good album, but quite different from earlier stuff. More clean vocals and clean production - guitars don't sound like they're drenched in doom.

I think you would like it since you like Solinari, Jondur.

Critique on your album:

1) I hope that's a drum machine. If it is, try to use double bass a little less. If it isn't, try to use double bass a little less.

2) It would sound much better with clean vocals: the instrumentation calls for a more Candlemass or Sahg feel. Try to recruit someone with a slight Southern drawl; it would be perfect then.

3) The guitar and bass work is amazing. Keep it up and don't change a thing.

4) Like I said before, find someone who can sing and have him do the main vocals. Some shrieks in the background every once in a while would complement it well, but I personally think it would sound better with clean vocals.

I tried getting a loan to cover flights out to this but unfortunately I've just taken out the mother of all mortgages so they wouldn't let me - needless to say I'm a bit gutted.

If anyone really wants to find out more about doom they could do worse than check out every single band on the lineup. seriously - if you live close enough to go, you should. Find out more info here: http://www.hellridemusic.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=91

Hurry though - it'll sell out soon.

Fires up SoulSeek.

I've only heard of Gates of Slumber and Orodruin from that list though, which are the ones to check first?

Place of Skulls.

They are great, just like anything Victor Griffin is involved with.

I'm listening to Sahg right now, the first time I've listened to thweir full length, before that just samples.
I must say, great stuff!

The Sahg album is in my top 2 or 3 of the year.

What's with so many death-doom bands deciding not to play live very often...

I'm still waiting for Swallow The Sun to come to the US. Mffff. :smash:

That would be awesome if they could play somewhere in North America, but I don't think it's gonna happen soon. Doom metal bands just don't seem big enough to play here very often, which is really too bad cause there are a lot of really great bands that we probably won't get to see unless we go to Europe.

Yeah, doom in general isn't a very listener friendly genre. I think they might have enough fans in North America to warrant a US tour though...

That would be awesome if it actually happened. I heard that My Dying Bride are actually going to play in North America this year, if they stop anywhere close to me I'll definitely make an effort to go. It would be even more incredible if they got STS to open up for them, I'd pay a lot of money to see that.

That WOULD be awesome indeed. MDB's new album was quite good, I thought.

Agreed, it was my personal favorite album of 2006. I loved Aaron's new vocal style, and John Bennett's drumming really brought something great to the band, the drums stuck out more for me on this one than on any of their other albums. And I absolutely love Thy Raven Wings, it's become of one my favorite MDB songs.

****... why won't MDB, or any doom band play in Canada. Down in British Columbia we get like nothing for the wise of metal. It's all rock and punk. It ****ing bones...

I think a lot of doom metal bands don't play live because it's hard to bring the atmopshere alive on stage.
Still I wouldnt mind, and I know quite a few doom/death bands that play exellent lives shows.
