Okay..here's the situation..

For the longest time I thought I just sucked at singing. However, I started getting some lessons..and I can now at least match pitches. Oddly..I can sing perfectly with other voices. Even if nobody else is singing, and an instrument is playing the melody..I can match it perfectly. But when it comes to just playing chords and pressing my voice as a melody against it..I can't do it. Any tips for developing this? Thanks guys..you rock.

Practice scales. And practice.

you can play guitar or piano and hit one note at a time and sing a vowel along with it. work on speeding it up and slowing it down. Unless youre tone deaf which it seems youre not, your brain wants to naturally match pitches and tones. The problem occurs when you overthink and/or tense the cords in the process. relax.

OH and practice too!

Actually, that's pretty common for a novice. Once you're really solid matching pitches with a keyboard, start working with a human voice (preferably one of the same sex, so you don't have to worry about singing in different octaves). Have the person sing a single note, then match it. Once you can do that easily throughout your range, do three notes scales. When you're solid with that, try several measures from various songs, etc.

Hope that helps,
Kristina
