i've read a lot of topics on here about octave range, how would i go about measuring mine? i have a guitar, i guess i could hit notes and try to follow them with my voice - but which notes?
thanks!

Sing the lowest note you can hit. Play the same note on guitar, it doesn't have to be in the same octave. Then sing a major scale and play the same scale along with your singing. Keep going higher as far as you can go. Go up with the guitar at the same time. When you're as high as you can sing see what note you're playing. You'll see how much higher you are from your starting point and that will be your range. Hope this kind of makes sense

Thats pretty much it. I use a piano usually. see what your natural voice range is and then go to falsetto. Falsetto can add one or more octaves. But some people dont include that or if you do include it you note it. Most males can sing up to the G above middle C with natural voice. Technically, Both upper and lower ranges are what can be done with a comfortable approach...without straining. I say if you can hit the note its in your range...hehe. Classical teachers wont say that.
Vocal range isnt that big of a deal. Its more relevant in classical and opera where technicality and tone is a big deal. Unless youre going that route its not that important of a thing to worry about. Thats my opinion

thanks for the reply. i tend to have a high-ish voice anyway, and often struggle to sing low and calmly.

lol, it's quite annoying. it's not that it's high as such, but when i sing loud, the depth to my voice disappears. daresay with more practice an warm up's i'll sort that out though.

Right, the cords cant hold the air and more air passes through so you actually lose tone and potential volume. If everything is comfortable keep pushing a bit more in your workouts.

really? i thought the way was not to push, as this could cause damage. i push like hell, and by the end of the practice i'm not in pain, but i have a strange sensation in my throat and chest. the next day (after two nights of 4 hour practice) my sides and stomach ached also. if i keep this up will it cause damage, or will i improve?

post a sample. Most people are uncomfortable with their own voice when they hear it. Just practice and make sure your throat is not tense, you can get more tone and flexibility when you have a relaxed larynx. Read through the Merkabas voicehelp hotline in the jams session links

this is a erally rough demo (we'd only played it once after first completing it)
the recording is horrible and pretty much void of bass which will make my voice sound tinnier. i don't usually sing at these levels - for once i didn't write the music so had no choice what key it was in. i think it might be a bit too high.
