View Full Version : Figuring out keys, harmony, etc

Ok...so, I, being a drummer, am not quite as proficient as I'd like to be at melodic theory. However, being a musician, I have always had tons of ideas running through my head...I just have absolutely no idea how to play them!
Anyways, so I finally sat down at a piano today and messed around for a while, and came up with a fairly accurate transcription of what notes are involved in the melody.
A few problems, however:
A) I have no idea what key it's in!
B) In order to expand upon these core melodies and turn them into a real song, I'm going to want to create harmonies....but I know pretty much jack about chords so I'm not sure which would be appropriate to accompany it.
Soooo...if I could post the keys, would any of you be able to help me out by figuring all of the theory parts out? I'll have to warn you that it's very strange music, with lots of black keys and random octave jumps...

The first thing is just a short, simple melody consisting of 6 different notes. It is based off of the 5th Octave, and I have reason to believe that the root note of the scale is an A.
The progression is E flat, D flat, C, B flat, A, B flat, C, D flat, E flat, G flat, A. That's it...
Next one's a little longer (and has been stuck in my head forever! ). It's an odd time piece, a little strange, with two main sections (that I've transcribed so far). I'll notate octaves with a number before the letter; hence, the lowest C would be 1C, etc. Hopefully that makes sense.
The first section consists of 3 bars of 7/16 followed by a bar of 6/16, followed by another 3 bars of 7/16 and then another two bars of 6/16. 7+7+7+6+7+7+7+6+6. Sounds alot more complicated than it is, trust me.
The second section is a kind of permutated 7/16 6/16, with an odd melody line and a few alterations here and there, eventually leading back into the first section feel and then on into more stuff.
Anyways, Section A:
1A flat, A flat, 2A flat, F flat, A flat x3 (the 7/16 part)
2F, G, A flat x 2 (6/16)
1A flat, A Flat, 2A flat, F flat, G flat x3 (7/16 again)
2F, G, A flat, F, G, A flat, (6/16)
3F, G, A flat, F, G, A flat (6/16)
*phew* that's section A. Did it make any sense?
The "B" section is a little strange...
2A flat, 3A flat, G flat, F, E (7/16) G flat, G flat, G, F, E (6/16)
That's the basic line, with a few alterations and fills here and there before it transitions back into A. Any idea what key this is in?

Scales do not have roots. Only chords (and trees) have roots.

Err...sorry. Again: I'm a rhythm guy. Not root....tonic, maybe? The first note of the scale...

Tonic.

Hmm. Doesnt fit into a standard scale. The closest diatonic key to this melody is B flat, probably the A locrian mode.

It harmonises reasonably well with F harmonic minor. Best not to stick strictly to the keys I've indicated, but they should give you a place to start.
