Okay, I'm looking at the zoom mrs8. It's a digital 8 track with drum machine. Would I be able to plug a mic into it and mic my amp with the separate mic? I don't have to use the crap guitar effects on there would I? And then I could put the music on my computer? Is there anything else I would need, like a PA or anything, or what?
OH yeah...how would the sound quality of a good tube amp (Traynor YCV50) being mic'd up by an SM57 (I believe that's the mic I'm looking at) compare to say a Vox Tonelab? Cause I'm considering returning my tonelab and doing this.
Thanks.

Nope to all questions apart from putting it on the computer, if it uses flash cards, you may need a reader but that's about it. If you want to mic your amp, you need to do nothing more than plugging in the mic, putting it in the posistion you want and then playing.

How much do you think a reader costs for the cards?
and here's the link moaner - http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/englishns_index.html and then click on MRS-8.

And I read that monitors are necessary for having a great mix, what are some good but budget ones that you might reccommend?

Wait, do they have to get put into my computer? And can I do it myself or do I have to get a professional to do it?
Also, what kind of mixers do your recommend that are cheap? And are there any other alternatives besides headphones?

Cheap mixers = Behringer UB series.
A UB1202 will give you 4 XLR inputs for about 60 pounds.
For cheap monitors, You will need active monitors over passive, this basicly means they have their own power rather than needing a power amp.
Try some Gemini PM-100, 25 watt speakers, they're never going to sound the same as larger speakers, but then 30 pounds isn't quite the same as 300.
I'd reccomend getting a good pair of enclosed headphones as well so you can hear your panning alot better, and things do sound alot different on headphones.

No, the card reader is like any other hardware (speakers, scanners, printers, etc.) for your computer; it's connected via USB. All you have to do is hook it up to a USB port and, if you're using Windows, go through the "New Hardware Wizard". You might need to install some software for the reader as well.
