I just started writing, and i was wondering if simple songs can be good. Heres what i mean. I like bands like van halen, and most of their lyrics are pretty simple, not too many of them have a deep meaning, or use great metaphores. So is there anyway for a simple like a lot of 80's song to make people go "wow thats a 10/10." sorry, this is kind of a confusing question.
and please crit one of my 1st songs, it called "Scatter the shadows"

as long as you've got some creative lyrics, even a 3 chord song could sound good

Simple lyrics suck. Of course, I listen to a lot of songs that have simple lyrics and I do enjoy them, but that's because of the music and melody of the piece; I also listen to some metal and can really get into the song even if I don't understand a word that's being said. But for an ideal situation make the lyrics good and the music good.

Simple lyrics suck.
I often times hate bands because their lyrics suck. Sure, the music is okay, but anyone can make okay music. I can, with a spoon and an empty tub of ice cream. But can I write good lyrics to go along with that? Possibly.
Also, it depends on if you are smart or not. Pop music has awful lyrics and the music is catchy. Do you want to be a pop star or someone who is worthy of not being called an idiot? It truly is your choice.

Some simple lyrics are ok; others suck but it depends on the music. Pop music does have sucky lyrics...but if you use too many big words no one will kno what the f*** ur talkin bout (unless they go and look up evey word in the dictonary).

That is why you dont use big words in pop lyrics. Either the singer wont know how to pronounce it, or the audience will not know how to properly hear the word, let alone process an idea of the meaning. Or both.
Big words dont make good songs. Good use of big words do, on the other hand.

simple as in simple ideas expressed in simple ways suck. However, simple words used to convey deep and ingenious ideas are extremely effective. Big words used in a good way and not just to confuse the crap out of everyone are excellent because then the listener doesn't feel like they're being talked down to or the artist *needed* to oversimplify their feelings/thoughts. Sometimes I just want to jam out to something that's easy to hear, but most times I want something that was never meant to be background music (like most pop). Something that has meaning, feeling, and you have to dig into it to recover this gem found in the connection between your mind and the artist's mind.

Conceited is as conceited does.
And also, I like to have to think about the meanings of songs. Well, not exactly think about the meaning, but find connections and meanings throughout the songs that are not seen right away. If they dawn upon you at a later time, you get more out of the song. Such as Aaron Weiss' writings.

Simple lyrics can be good, maybe not great though. If that is what you are looking for then go for it, but you won't get anyone comparing you to Lennon. What made Van Halen have great songs was the creativity of the music, not the lyrics. They were also in an era when most of the music didn't have great lyrics.
