Somebody told me that Topper wrote the bassline for Rock the Casbah. Does anybody know if this is true? Also, did the Clash ever play Rock the Casbah live? By that time Topper was gone, so somebody else would need to play the piano part, because we all know Terry Chimes sucks.

Coma_Girl

topper wrote rock the casbah, but not the lyrics.

in the video of rock the casbah, its the gay lamborghini guy playing drums, and thats why we dont see him much...it was toppers song.it sucks that the gay lamborghini guy was on the video and not topper.IT WAS HIS SONG!

sure.maybe he helped joe a bit, but I'm pretty sure ive read somewhere that Joe wrote the lines now the king told the boogie man, you gotta let that ragga drop..because Rhodes didnt like the music.

and listen to it.it's joe's writing style.

topper wrote the whole song

Cool, I wasn't sure. I'm glad they only showed about 20 seconds of the Lamborghini Guy in Westway.

And what was the name of that one guy that was originally another guitarist in the Clash? I think it was Vince. You know, the guy that Paul said took his rehersal spot.

Joe Strummer wrote the lyrics about an Arab ruler (the Shereef) who hates music, but is defied by the citizens and even his own air force. Strummer was inspired by a news report of Iranians who were flogged for owning Disco albums. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)
Clash Drummer Topper Headon wrote the music. Headon left the group shortly after this was released because of his heroin addiction. He was replaced by Tory Crimes, who was the original drummer for The Clash.
This was The Clash's biggest United States hit and along with "Train In Vain," one of only 2 that reached the Top 40. They had several Top 40 hits in England.
In the UK this single was backed by "Long Time Jerk." That song cannot be found anywhere else.

Here it is, folks.

I'm not sure, but I'd love to go.

And to Dustin, its where the Clash rehearsed in their early days. Mick thought it was a Jewish thing, and he was talking about it in Westway.

edit: i dont why i said 'was' cause he's not dead...yet.

I don't think he was, since he said he thought it was Jewish thing, so he probably wasn't a Jew.

And Travis is correct! 10 points :thumb:.

And I also read this, and its one of the saddest things I've ever read because it makes me think of Joe :upset:.

Clash members Mick Jones and Joe Strummer played White Riot together for the last time in November, 2002. Jones was in the audience for one of Strummer's solo shows and came onstage to join him. Strummer usually didn't like to play this, but he turned to Jones and said, "This one's in 'A', you know it." Strummer died of a heart attack a month later.

EDIT: White Riot! is also correct.

I heard Mick's song "MP FREE" from his new band carbon/silicon. it reflects Mick's view about P2P filesharing. Mick believes that people should be free to rip, mix and burn music and encourages fans to record and distribute gig recordings.

guns_of_brixton

I'll search for some info.

But in the meantime, I noticed that in Police and Thieves, Joe added "THey're goin' through a tight wind" which is a line from the Ramones song Blitzkreig Bop. I think it might be some sort of a tribute, because on Westway Joe was saying how much he loved the Ramones 1st album.

This definetly makes sense, since they had the prices of London Calling and Sandinsita lowered.

And as for religon, none of the sites I found said anything, One site said they weren't sure about Joe, though.

I've heard all of Combat Rock and most of Sandinista. And to White Riot, Know your Rights is such an awesome song. "This is a public service announcement... with guitars!" As I said before, its an awesome way to start the album.

My favorite part of the Rock the Casbah video is the Jews and Middle Eastern dudes hanging out because its pretty ironic considering Israel and Palistine are at war.

And to Travis, I'm not sure about the Middle Eastern guys going to Burger King, and also, sorry about confusing you .

I don't remember if I heard it in this thread, or from one of my friends, so I'll ask anyway. Did the clash cover Louie Louie? Becuase I remember hearing that they did and Joe was really messed up when they recorded it, so the only lyrics he could remember were "Louie, Louie"
i have the cover somewhere on my computer.

On the Last Testament dvd the Clash do a cover of Louie Louie with Topper on guitar and Guy Stevens or Bill Price (one of those guys) playing drums. And basically the only lyrics to that song are "Louie Louie".

EDIT: Black Flag "Louie Louie" lyrics:

Louie, Louie!
We gotta go.
I said now Louie, Louie!
We gotta go.
You know the pain, that's in my heart,
it just shows, I'm not very smart.
Who needs love, when you've got a gun?
Who needs love, to have any fun?
I said now Louie, Louie!
We gotta go!
Said, now screwie Louie!
We gotta go.
Louie, Louie!
We gotta go.

THey were so great because they did thing that nobody had ever done before. White guys doing hip-hop? Let alone white-guy punk rockers? Also, in my opinion, Joe was the greatest songwriter of all time, and the Clash had great chemistry and fit together perfectly.

whats the story behind that song?

Something from let fury have the hour(article "Be Bop A Lula, Here's Joe Strummer" written in 1988 by Ann Scanlon for Sounds):

"God knows he even sold his marriage vows for it (rock n roll). In 1974 he married a complete stranger, who needed immigration status in order to travel abroad, and he used the resultant E100 to buy the black Telecaster he has used every night since.
"I'd like to get divorced," he shrugs, 'but I can't find her.'
It's not something that Strummer - now the father of two daughters - things about from one year to the next.
"I've been with Gabrielle for ten years and we don't need a piece of paper to tell us we're together."

And although he now accepts that the clash have split for good, he and Jones are closer than ever.
"Mick's daughter Lauren and my daughter Jazzi are the best of friends - a terrible duo - so I see him all the time. I see Paul too and I'm going to go and see Topper who's been detained at Her Majesty's pleasure."

sketchyjoe

there's this guy i met on a poetry website (im not emo.) who met Joe & The Meskies.

"Yea, Andy, when I met him after The Mescaleros show in Hartford Ct, I was carrying a local paper and had gotten autographs from all the band members (I am not one for autographs, and this was just a prop and way not to look so nervous), as I hadn't spotted Joe. When I saw him relaxed and in a dark corner, it wa sobvious he had been watching me. So, I introduced myself, told him I quit the factory after hearing his message in Clampdown (your favorite song!), and went back to College and even one some awards writing poetry. He said it was one of the nicest things he ever heard a fan say, shook my hand, had some small talk, and then asked why I didn't ask HIM for his autograph? I told him it was a sort of prop, we laughed, and I said will you please sign this? He did and wrote, "To David = star Thanks Joe Strummer" There you have it! So glad to share this with you, and you seem so awesome and well adjusted in life.(this is the moment where Id say:'hummm' if it wasnt a email)."

so yeah, this is his story...just thought id share cause i like the part when he says he quit the factory after hearing clampdown.the clash changed so many lifes.

Paul looks like a farmer with leather pants .

And on the last page you guys were talking about who was the hottest one, and in and interview I read once, the interviewer asked Joe if the Clash ever had groupies. He said that Paul was the only good looking one, so only Paul had groupies .
paul wasnt THAT hot.

paul wasnt THAT hot.

He brings out my gay side :p.

Its pretty awesome that your friend David quit his factory job to do what he wanted to do. Joe's lyrics really spoke to people.

Bernie returned as the manager at one point.

Caroline was their manager during Combat Rock, according to some article I read, but I don't think it was mentioned in Westway.

the only one ive read so far is Let Fury Have The Hour: Punk Rock Politics of Joe Strummer and it's good, but it says the same thing over and over again in different words. It's a great book if you want something to make you realize the impact of Joe on the society.

I think i'll get Passion Is A Fashion next month cause it seems pretty interesting and maybe Vision Of An Homeland, the book on the mescaleros.

I read part of The Last Gang in Town, but I didn't think it was very good. But that was when I didn't like the Clash as much, so I should probably give it another try.

2004.

he still looks like a rat...some things never change. He do looks old (which is kinda normal) and sad...Sad but not on heroin anymore. I don't like to see my heros all weird and old like that...It's like they are still 25 in my head...and it's a shock when I see a picture of them old.For some reason, Joe didnt look old to me.But the first time I saw a recent picture of Mick..I just couldnt believe he was that old...same for Topper.Paul still looks pretty much like when he was 25 anyways.

Public Enemy is awesome, Chuck D is a great writer/ lyricist (sp?).

And I'm sure I can fing that magazine somewhere around here.

I wish I had a teacher who was a Clash whore too :upset:. My history teacher last year knew who the Clash were and said that Train in Vain was a cool song, but thats about it.

It was actually Dustin (Ska_Pirate) who said that, but I'll take the credit :p.

But I agree that the Clash influenced PE and I think NWA too.
