It never existed... But on Westway at the special features where it shows the discography and plays a song from each album, the song they had on there sounded like and over-produced piece of crap. Blame it on Chimes.

side 6 of sandinista was pretty bad but at least it had real drums. i always leave "the 6th clash album" out of my discography listing. and bernie rhodes is responsible for the glorious beginning and miserable ending of the only band that matters; terry chimes just sucks.

I don't like it when people judge the Clash by that album, just because it had some hit singles. Somebody in Westway said that it was the beginning of the end.

No but seriously, Jimmy Jazz is the coolest song in the world. "Look like a soldier... feel like a theif!" LOVE those lyrics. lol, i feel like a noob. But i hardly ever talk about the Clash, all my friends think there wired and yea...

^Oh, i like Tommy Gun... i remember walking down a street once, listening to my CD player, and like, it was the last time i was gonna see a good friend of mine, whose house i just left, and i like almost cracked while Tommy Gun was playing. The Clash can have that effect on peopel, hah. /memories.

Paul Simonon smashed his bass guitar - as photographed on the cover of London Calling - at exactly 10.50pm. This is because he broke his watch in the process and handed the busted bits to photographer Pennie Smith

This is scary because strummer left us when he was 50 and talked to simonon on his last night

i have seen the GEER poster in montreal but i havent bought it.I have this one where it's written Joe Strummer (1952-2002) and on the pictures they're all smoking and wearing leather jacket and i think joe have a hat and a shirt with a dragon.I'm sure you know which picture i'm talking about  but its the coolest poster ever.I also have the one where they all have guitars and it's written 'paris 1979', but its not on my wall yet.

The Card Cheat and Straight to hell are the two saddest clash songs IMO.........Great lyrics

You gotta do Koka Kola in your project man

Koka Kola is an awesome song about corporate culture and the way that most advertisers make every product seem close to a drug without actually being one , and coke was the first company to do that. (since they needed to keep their existing base of customers when they had to remove KoKaine out of the drink)

Koke Adds Life was an advertising slogan of coca cola (with a c not a K of course)

Here is Strummers awesome quote that is very relevant to Koka Kola

"in a world that builds on illusion. advertising is illusion... [...] in america, they're gone... i tell you they're gone... you go to california.. i'm talking really simple basic things.. you touch a piece of wood.... wrong! this wood is not wood. this wood looks like wood. [...] people smile at you... wrong! they've been told by the management to smile at you. so really, you're not seeing anything that's real... not the objects, the buildings, the signs, everything is fake. [...] and what they get we will get later... if the world is moving towards that then i'm not interested... i like to come back here cause here in london we have reality, we have people shoving you out the way... that gesture, it's clear. this guy's in a bad mood and he's shoving me out the way... that is real communication... in california, they'll sue you. they'll sue you or smile at you while he's thinking of shoving you out the way... "

hope this helps you ska

The Card Cheat is one of the saddest songs around.

guns_of_brixton
03-18-2005, 10:23 AM
"To the opium den and the barroom gin
In the belmont chair playing violins
The gambler’s face cracks into a grin
As he lays down the king of spades

But the dealer just stares
There’s something wrong here, he thinks
The gambler is seized and forced to his knees
And shot dead"

A very cool and sad song indeed.

ohhh today my friend found an interview with Joe in the Rock & Folk (a gay french magazine) and it was pretty good (and sad).Joe explains why they choose the name Mescaleros and how he was afraid of destroying the career of the other guys in the meskies cause the first album didnt work well. And he talks about being on drugs and understanding techno music...ohh anyway.the last words were : "Comment la mort ou la gloire sont devenus juste une autre histoire'. and i thought it was beautiful and thought the guy who did the interview was awesome...then i realized he just translated lyrics from death or glory.I never realized how words are powerful before i started listening to the clash.

My favorite Clash CD is by far their first self-titled one, other than that I can't seem to get into it. I have 'Combat Rock' as well which I can't get into.

Any suggestions for an album I should hear that will redeem themselves?

guns_of_brixton
03-20-2005, 09:58 AM
You could try Give 'em Enough Rope (my avatar), it sounds like their self titled but was produced "better". By better, I mean it has better sound quality. Its not as good as their self titled, but still a very good album.

I hate the production on GEER. It spoiled the album in my opinion.

It was too polished IMO but maybe I should give it another listen. It's been ages since I listened to it.

guns_of_brixton
03-20-2005, 12:03 PM
It was produced by Sandy Pearlman, the same guy who did Blue Oyster Cult. The guitars were too loud and ther wasn't enough bass in my opinion, and the vocals were too polished also.

The vocals are done by a little kid, and the lines "I hate the army an' I hate the R.A.F. I don't wanna go fighting in the tropical heat. I hate the civil service rules, and I won't open letter bombs for you." are replaced with "I hate all of my school's rules. They just think that I'm another fool."

I'm not saying he would have liked being president, and that people (except us) would have voted for him, but he had great ideas.I've read something in a french magazine....The readers voted Joe as the artist they would have wanted for president.Joe answered with his 'electoral program' and it was really good.I need to find it and to scan it...I wonder if he ever realized he is so important to some people...maybe Sean is right...he was too humble to know it.or at least to know just how much he had an impact on younger generation

yeah your right , but Jones was a great bandleader who had great songwriting abilities. Mick was the tunesmith while Joe was mostly the heart and soul of the music that the clash made , a true rock rebel

I think the combination of Mick , Joe , Paul and Topper was magical and one in a million. Mick brought great musicianship and songcrafting , Joe brought his passion and heart to it , Paul brought diversity to the music because of his upbringings in brixton , Topper brought musicianship and diversity and precision to the table as well.

The sum of the Clash was much greater than the value of its parts.

without any of them the Clash would not be Clash , that definently includes Paul and Topper.

sketchyjoe
03-22-2005, 06:17 AM
I wouldn't argue that Topper was an integral part of the group but he didn't play on 'The Clash' and that's a great album.

Oh, and someone claimed that Terry Chimes was one of the three guys who joined Joe and Paul on Cut The Crap and actually it they were Nick Sheppard, Vince White, and Pete Howard. Chimes was just a stand-in when Topper quit/was sacked.

The sum of the Clash was much greater than the value of its parts.

Right on, man.

And Paul was definetly a huge part of the Clash. On the first album his basslines were the only thing holding the music together, and like Travis said, gave them the reggae influence. And without Topper we wouldn't have Rock the Casbah or Revolution Rock for sure. And as far as drummiing abilities go, Topper>Chimes.

Coma_Girl

i couldnt sleep so im back, and im gonna puke on my keyboard.

i agree.side 2 is good.but the whole album is pretty good anyway.
and i agree that the clash never made the same album over and over again...and that's why they are better than the ramones.and because joe had a lot of talent at writing lyrics, and whoever was writing the lyrics in the ramones (dee dee i think?) was kinda lame (depends on the songs).
The clash were also 100x times better than the ramones just because they didnt hate each other (except at the end) and they were all friends and i think it helped them a lot to create the best music ever.

that's why we call the clash The Only Band That Matters.
and that it's true.

And Dustin, you can toss this site in your bibliography if you want, even though you probably already know it.

I don't know much about Topper. Pretty much just what I've heard in this thread and:

Drummer Topper Headon wasn't an original member of the Clash, but it was his arrival that helped push the group to the next musical level, as he quickly became an integral part of the group. Born Nicholas Bowen Headon on May 30, 1955 in Bromely, Kent, Headon grew up a soul and jazz fan (an early influence was ace fusion drummer Billy Cobham), as he was once a member of a local group that opened a show for the Temptations. It was through an acquaintance, guitarist Mick Jones, that Topper got the heads up about a try out with the Clash in 1977 - after the group had gone through an extraordinary amount of drummers during their short timespan together. With the group already enjoying a substantial following and signed to Epic Records, Headon agreed to join up with the group. But Headon's original plan was to stay with the Clash for only a year - which he figured would give enough time to get his name known, so he could move on to another more 'suitable' group. But Headon quickly realized that the group was not just a one-dimensional punk band, as they branched out and touched upon a wide variety of styles - all the while never losing sight of their original punk ideals. Headon appeared on such Clash albums as 1978's Give 'Em Enough Rope (on which producer Sandy Pearlman dubbed Headon 'The Human Drum Machine,' due to his impeccable timing and skills), 1979's classic double album London Calling, 1980's sprawling triple album set Sandinista! (which featured one of Headon's few lead vocals with the Clash, "Ivan Meets G.I. Joe"), and 1982's Combat Rock, the latter of which contained the Clash's biggest hit single, "Rock the Casbah," which was almost entirely penned and played by Headon.

But despite the Clash becoming one of the world's top rock outfits, a heroin addiction had drawn a wedge between Headon and the rest of his bandmates - leading to Headon being told to either 'shape up or ship out.' Unfortunately, Headon couldn't keep up his end of the bargain, which led to his dismissal from the Clash in 1982. After a planned reunion with Jones (who was expelled from the Clash himself a year after Headon's dismissal) in the group Big Audio Dynamite failed to work out, Headon focused on recording a solo album. Issued in 1986, Headon's Waking Up turned out to be an album that featured primarily soul, jazz, and R&B compositions, as well as several tracks that dealt with Headon's vices ("Got to Keep on Going," "Just Another Hit," etc.). The album failed to gain the attention of the Clash's following, as Headon was sent to jail a year later for drug-related offenses. In addition to recording with the Clash, Headon helped produce the obscure New York City new wave outfit the Bush Tetras in the early '80s (the releases Better Late Than Never, Boom in the Night, and Tetrafied), as well as playing drums on the Mick Jones-produced 1981 solo release by ex-Mott the Hoople leader Ian Hunter, Short Back and Sides. Although little has been heard or seen of Headon since his Clash days, he was extensively interviewed along with his other former bandmates for the superb Clash bio-movie, Westway to the World, in the late '90s. ~ Greg Prato
