Yea, The Clash have huge accents. And I thought it was pretty awesome in Westway when they show about 30 seconds of a performance of the Guns of Brixton and Joe is playing the bass.

yeap thats my fav part. of the whole movie..and the part were it shows a clip of them playing "whats my name"

CombatRock

we're all losers cuz we can't help but post in here so the thread will never die.

:upset: but i love this thread and i can't let it die.

what's your favorite quote by joe, mick, paul, topper?or even the ermm...guy with the lamborghini

"at micks nans flat, mick was showing me a G chord that changed to an A chord, but after hours of complete fustration on are parts we decided to pick up a bass cos it was easier and had 4 strings"-paul

my favorite live part is when you saw them play complete control and the crowd sing C-O-N COOONTROOOL.and everybody seems to have a lot of fun and the crowd sing along.
or when you see joe do this strange guitar move when he sings "i dont trust you..so why should ya trust me HUUUUUH?all over town the news spread fast..."

During "Whats my Name," doesn't Joe turn to the camera near the end of the clip and shout "**** off!." Or was that another song?

"I didn't want the role of being Entwhistle or Bill Wyman, stuck in the background. That's too depressing and if that was what I'd been offered with The Clash I would've turned it down. Maybe that's the nature of the job, or has been in the past; the bass player as the one that held the fort, so to speak, along with the drummer, letting every body else go lunatic. But y'know- why can't we all be lunatics?"- Paul

That was in a bass mag I bought that had the 50 greatest punk bass lines in it. London Calling got 3rd. That guy was a hack though, he didn't know anything about Punk.

It's so easy and catchy too, I could play it for hours.

Yea, I think some Rancid song got number 1. And he was an idiot because

the Guns of Brixton> Magnificent 7> Police and Theives> London Calling> every other Punk song.

The Stranglers got #2, and the song was 3 f'ucking notes.

And they had Anarchy In The UK on there, which I learned to play on bass when I was seven.

Yea, bassists with five times more talent that him can't come up with basslines half as good as Paul's.

Note: Like the bassist in Pink FLoyd, who for all of his "genius" can't write a bassline that extends beyond backing root notes.

I hate how classic rock is lorded over Punk, claiming they have more musical ability, but in reality they never use it except to create boring 132142 minute long "jams" that have no relevance in furthering the progress of music.

F'ucking homos.

WorryRocker921

Playing the root notes gets boring geez. Only good bassists can come up with funky stuff.

Thats why I suck!

I couldn't have said it better myself :thumb:. Classic rock bands might have been much better musicians than punk bands, but their music isn't nearly as rellevant.

Note: Like Pink FLoyd, who for all of their "genius" can't write a song that extends beyond abstract psuedo-spiritual lyrics and boring backing stuff, then throw in the occasional good solo.

I do like Bicycle though, but that was with their old singer, who was literally insane.

The only bassist that I really can stand from a "Classic Rock Band" was JPJ, because the line to Ramble On is f'ucking insane.(He played that crazy line with one finger!)

But other than that, Dog poo>Led Zeppelin

Paul brought a lot of the reggae influence to the band. When he wrote Guns Of Brixton he wanted it to be a punk song but he wasn't good enough to make it sound how he wanted so it came out more reggae.

TheNowhereman42
03-01-2005, 06:32 PM
The Specials tried to write Reggae songs but it was too hard, so they wrote ska instead.

what kind of guitar did strummer use

CombatRock
03-02-2005, 06:52 PM
fender telecaster, i think he had 2..a both black, one with a rosewood fretboard, and another with a maple

paul simonon used a rickenbacker early on but hated so went on to use a white/black fender with a maple fretboard,,which is the famous one he smashed, he also used a white/black fender with a rosewooed fretboard
and in the video for "the call up" and " london calling" he can be seen usign what looks liek an ibanez hollow body bass..paul got his fender basses from CBS

mick jones used a gibson lespaul..cherry sunburst, and he also had a moroon looking one, he had a yellow double cut away along with a red one..and in one video he was using a all black fender stratocaster

i dont no what drums topper used though

Just too add a little info, Paul like the P-Bass because it felt more like a weapon, and the Rickenbacker was too flat.

some more usefull info about the clash gear is

paul hated his bass being all nice, he would always beat it up and throw it around on stage..on his bass he smashed in new york that bass had his name painted, pressure painted on it, a checker board painted on and paint splants on the pick gaurd

and on another one of his basses he painted the headstock black and had a sticker on it

micks gutiars were always clean and no paint oin it, expet one les paul he had , he put a sticker on it

You guys probably know this, but Paul had 2 Fender basses, a good-sounding one and a bad one. The one he smashed in NY (london calling cover) was the good one, and he regretted it for years.
yea why he liked the one he smashed so much is it was a heavier model and more expenisve model, but the basses CBS gave im were cheap and light weight

the car in the exact condition in which he left it, this includes a pair of his signature sunglasses, a flashlight and a half-smoked packet of his favorite Rothmans cigarettes!! The car has a carpet dash cover which Joe put in himself, three bumper stickers Joe stuck on, and a small dent on the rear quarter panel which Joe put on himself too!!
and
other incredible Joe Strummer personal memorabilia (with lots of signatures) including his actual California Drivers License, two AAA cards, English voting card, the written portion of his driving test, a whole bunch of receipts and records for his ’55 Cadillac and even a speeding ticket he picked up in Santa Barbara.
what a ****ing bastard.i can't stand it for some reasons...no respect. i dont think joe would be happy to see that.

well at a gig in germany...
in the song midnight jam on streetcore joe says:
"name every jail in germany, i've been there while touring with the band" or something along those lines.

he died before he finished the vocals for this song, so there's no lyrics, just parts of joe talking that they took in the radio show he used to host (London Calling). The song starts with "this is london calling..calling...calling".The echo is really cool.

"Police on My Back" was written by Eddy Grant when he was leader of the Equals, a British group who fused rock, reggae, and soul rhythms; the band's sole international hit was the admirably eccentric groover "Baby Come Back," but the Clash picked up on one of the group's minor British hits, "Police on My Back," while recording their fourth album

the list of songs the clash covered:

Police and Thieves (junior murvin)
Brand New Cadillac (vince taylor? not sure of the guys name)
wrong 'em boyo (i think the clash wrote and added the stagger lee part though)
revolution rock (willie williams)
armagiddeon times (willie williams)
pressure drop (toots and the maytals)
i fought the law (his name escapes me)
junco partner (101ers cover...does that count?)
jail guitar doors (another 101ers song)
look here (very bad song)
Police on my Back (i forget)
time is tight (booker t and the MGs)

"the clash: the return of the last gang in town" by marcus gray...excellent book on the band

i hope ive been helpful

wrong 'em boyo (i think the clash wrote and added the stagger lee part though)
I've got the Rulers version on a Trojan Boxset (It's called Wrong Embryo) and The Clash covered it pretty faithfully. They didn't add anything.

Police and Thieves (junior murvin)
Brand New Cadillac (vince taylor? not sure of the guys name)
wrong 'em boyo (i think the clash wrote and added the stagger lee part though)
revolution rock (willie williams)
armagiddeon times (willie williams)
pressure drop (toots and the maytals)
i fought the law (his name escapes me)
junco partner (101ers cover...does that count?)

These should all legally be Clash songs, because I think a lot of them are better than the original's, but that's just me talking.

Anyone hear that cover of Junco Partner on Give Em The Boot 4?

The Mescaleros did it live, it was great.

Redemtion Song was sadder than than Titanic. Joe Strummer was a real, amazing, guy who died and leonoardo and his ugly face tried had some one night stand with a girl...and that's so sad they couldnt' be together.suuuure.

The Lamboghini Guy was Terry Chimes (or Crimes), the Clash's original drummer. He wasn't into the music, and was quoted saying that he was in the band so he could make some money and buy a Lamborghini. He was an arse, to say the least.
