Know your Clash and Joe strummer thread.
I like that. And the new one is ok, I guess. Maybe we can rotate them evey once in awhile just to keep things fresh. The only thing wrong with the MX Calling one was Brain is Squirmin' left in "The" before Clash. So it read "The Official The Clash/Joe Strummer Thread". Which sounded kind of awkward. But the new one is good for now.

Agreed. I liked it though, solely for entertainment purposes though.
JohnXDoe
10-26-2005, 07:11 PM
SLC Punk is a comedy. Almost a parody. In fact I would say it's exactly a parody. I don't think it's supposed to be a representation of punk. As a matter of fact I think it's a deliberate misrepresentation of it. It's a silly movie. It takes a stab at social observation, but that's about it. It's a send up. At least that's how I see it.

Are they horrible actors?
Of course the are. But Joe was actually a pretty good actor. You ever see any of his movies? Strange and interesting.
Mystery Train and Straight to Hell were the films with his biggest roles. Worth a rental if you can find them. Or sometimes they are on cable here and there. He made some smaller films as well. Although those two are low budget affairs themselves.

12-12-2005, 06:17 AM
Hey Clash board. I meant to post here over the weekend but it slipped my mind. With the changes being made at MX my subscribed threads seem to get wiped with regularity now. I don't know if that's going to be a common thing from now on, but it makes this thread hard to find without a bump. So here's a bump.
Anyway, seems this thread has slowed a bit. Or more. But I'm gonna try to keep it bumped with at least semi regular posting of at least semi interesting Clash/Joe Strummer stuff. We'll see what I can come up with. So, where are all the Clash faithful these days? It's getting lonely in here. :(

Yeah. I've seen that somewhere or another on the internet, I believe. I had no idea that show still ran. I think it started here in the States some years ago. Jools and David Sanborn used to co-host it, I think. My mom used to watch it when I was a kid. I remeber being 8 years old and seeing the Pixies on. They sounded crazy to my little kid ears. :)

I have a Joe Strummer story.
I went to see the Clash back in, I think 77 or 78, with my roommate Kat. We were right in front of the stage, pressed up against the wooden barriers that kept us a few feet away from the band. A few songs in I heard a [I]crack[I] and the barrier in front of me and Kat bent forward. The auditorium was packed, and the kids were pressing forward farther and farther. I suddenly realized that the wood post would give at any minute, and my friend and I might be crushed, or at least, seroiusly injured.
I must have had a frightened look on my face, cos a roadie lept forward and try to pull us out into the pit, but by then we were wedged in too tightly. I'm not sure what exactly happened next, but suddenly the music had stopped, and Joe Strummer was at the mike instructing everyone to listen to him, to move back, move back. They did. I put my arms around the roadie, he pulled one more time, and I was free. Kat was pulled out right behind me.
I guess you could say that Joe Strummer saved us. He was a good guy.

Paul sang... well he "sang" (if you wanna call it that) Red Angel Dragnet, the Crooked Beat, and of course the Guns of Brixton, which he wrote.
And also, Mick wrote all the lyrics to Complete Control.

Paul is a good bass player. He should stick to bass. I never really liked his vocals. Even for a punk band.
He really knew how to throw down some fat bass on all of the Clash's funk and reggae tunes. Solid all around player, too.

^Paul acting, lol. He should stick to painting. Joe was a good actor, though. Anyone see some of his movies? Mystery Train was great. Here's a couple of sample lines. Joe plays Johnny:
Johnny: Don't call me Elvis! If you can't use my proper name, why don't you try "Carl Perkins, Jr." or something? I mean, I don't call them "Sam & Dave", do I?
Dave: Hey, man. My name is Dave.

I've been listening to the Mescaleros a lot lately, especially Global A-Go-Go. I love the spacey world music feel of that album. Johnny Appleseed is fantastic (and has a Bob Dylan) reference but I also love Cool 'N' Out, Mega Bottle Ride and especially Bhindi Bhagee.

US has better individual songs, UK is more cohesive. I say UK version cos I Fought The Law, Complete Control, Clash City Rockers,& White Man are all the compilations (inc. the live album) and Jail Guitar Doors is on SBMC. Plus the singles version of White Riot thats on the US version is all the compilations too.

Yeah, the UK album does seem to fit together better, as it was their first. The the US version had some great singles though, like the ones mentioned. But the version of White Riot on the UK version is better than the US one.

I love Stay Free. One of 2 Clash songs that mentions Brixton, and one of my favorite album(The Sex Pistols).
The Sex Pistols may have been the first British punk rock band, but the Clash were the definitive British punk rockers. Where the Pistols were nihlistic, the Clash were fiery and idealistic, charged with righteousness and a leftist political ideology. From the outset, the band was more musically adventurous, expanding their hard rock & roll with reggae, dub, and rap rockabilly among other roots musics. Furthermore, they were blessed with two exceptional songwriters in Joe Strummer and Mick Jones, each with a distinctive voice and style. The Clash copped heavily from classic outlaw imagery, positioning themselves as rebels with a cause. As a result, they won a passionately devoted following on both sides of the Atlantic. While they became rock & roll heroes in the UK, second only to the Jam in terms of popularity, it took the Clash several years to break into the American market and when they finally did in 1982, they imploded several months later. Though the Clash never became the superstars they always threatened to become, they restored passion and protest to rock & roll. For a while, they really did seem like "the only band that mattered. and just check this one... the documentary film of joe strummer The Future is Unwritten. its features contributions from Bono, Martin Scorsese, Johnny Depp and John Cusack. The film features footage of his early life as well as rare clips of the band. and its 18th of may 2007 the release date of the future is unwritten...

I've been digging Sandinita! alot lately. Up in Heaven and Somebody Got Murdered are classics. Also, Career Oppertunities is cute.
