I noticed that alot of the tracks on From Here to Eternity are from a show the Clash did at Bond's in NYC, which is a really good bootleg.

From here to enternity is a bootlegg?
RIP Ian Curtis
08-18-2005, 11:38 PM
I didnt notice it was you, post here more andy!
To IAN (or whatever) what dont you like about there idealism?
I'm just not an idealist. I don't particularly like getting preached at by any kind of idealist.

From here to enternity is a bootlegg?
No, but Live at Bond's is, and that is were alot of Eternity's tracks come from.

I bought from here to eternity and it's really good.
and I love their idealism.
and I love that too:
"At one point he remembers his flatmate (Joe) returning from a few weeks away, bursting through the front door and declaring ecstatically 'I've found God!' before disappearing into his bedroom for a few days never to mention the incident again. Another time, Joe gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a drowned mouse, which had been lured into a trap consisting of a cheese baited ruler and a bucket of water."
oh yeah, and I think I forgot to tell you guys how I talked about Joe with Tim Armstrong. I'm awesome.
RIP Ian Curtis
08-19-2005, 12:21 AM
yes you are.
Mannik
08-19-2005, 07:28 AM
Bernie Rhodes wrote some of it, there was no Mick or Topper, and Joe wasn't Joe for that period in time.
This Is England is pretty good though, I've read.
This Is England is awesome, I'd even compare it to Washington Bullets or mabye even White Man In Hammersmith(mabye not that far).
Anyway, here it is, don't be put off by the strange percussion at the start.

So you only own their first album?
RIP Ian Curtis
08-19-2005, 11:29 AM
I've got a bunch of mp3s. I don't know any albums, I just listed what I liked. I'm not big on some of the more synthy stuff like "lost in a supermarket" or "rock the casbah". I don't mind "Police On My Back", that sounds like it came off a later album. their cover of I Fought The Law also appeals to me.
guns_of_brixton
08-19-2005, 11:38 AM
The Clash > Career Ops, White Riot, Complete Control, London's Burning
Give 'em Enough Rope > Safe European Home, Tommy Gun, Guns on the Roof
London Calling > Rudie Can't Fail, Death or Glory, Lost In the Supermarket, Guns of Brixton
Sandinista! > Police on my Back, Mag 7, Junco Partner, The Leader
Combat Rock > Rock the Casbah, Straight to Hell, Know Your Rights, Should I Stay?
RIP Ian Curtis

Nothing wrong with that, it's a great album.
RIP Ian Curtis
08-19-2005, 12:46 PM
indeed it is. apparently it's called The Good, The Bad and The Ugly sometimes? I've only ever seen it called "The Clash" but then again their whole catalogue got confused in importation no?
guns_of_brixton
08-19-2005, 12:47 PM
Hmmm... I've never heard it called that... but it is the biggest selling import of all time.

Let's Go Crazy
Washington Bullets
White Man In Hammersmith
Revolution Rock(how cool would it be just to lay under the shade of a palm tree and listen to this song?)
Safe European Home

RIP Ian Curtis
08-22-2005, 12:19 PM
hey strummerville, I'm not really an albums cat, I go for best ofs and mp3s. But substance is one of the few albums I've actually forked out for and it's worth it. If you can find their really early stuff it's interesting to compare to their later, more well-know stuff. Basically I'd recomend you get their Best Of album, work out what sortof songs you like more (old, punker stuff from when they were still Warsaw, half and half stuff, or full on post-punk with synth like "Love Will Tear Us Apart). Then decide which album you would prefer based on that. And then if you really like them, buy all the albums. That is my advice...
guns_of_brixton
08-22-2005, 12:19 PM
The Notebook is some f'ucking movie, eh?
And I've got Super Black Market. It is pretty cool, but most of the stuff at the end is weird and boring.
Strummerville
08-22-2005, 03:27 PM
Thanks for the advice Curtis. I like both Warsaw and Love Will Tear Us Apart but I'll have a trawl through their stuff soon. I'll probably Substance too.
Regarding Super Black Market Clash, there are some of my fave Clash songs on there. 'Gates Of The West', '1977', the cover of 'Pressure Drop' are all quality.

When you say the end, do you mean the end of the clash or the end of Super Black Market Clash?
guns_of_brixton
08-22-2005, 07:46 PM
The end of Super Black Market. But the album is done chronologically (big word) so that stuff is from the end of the Clash's career.
sketchyjoe
08-22-2005, 07:47 PM
I thought it was released mid-career though.
guns_of_brixton
08-22-2005, 07:55 PM
Black Market was released mid-career so the fans could have songs like Capital Radio and I Fought the Law that were'nt released on the UK s/t or any album for that matter.
Super Black Market was after the Clash was over and had EVERY rarity from 1976-1983 or so.
RIP Ian Curtis

man I re-listened to Rock The Casbah the other day. Still a crappy song but it has some rather interesting lyrics that I didn't pick up on before.
"degenerate the faithful with that crazy casbah sound"
strangely applicable, thought I

just when I'm already sad. :upset: (i always listen to streetcore when i'm sad..) but anyway, redemption song makes me cry more than silver and gold.
oh yeah, and about rock the casbah:
I went to this really crappy bar with my friends (cause they don't ask if you're 18) and it was empty, so we asked the dj for "rock music", but the music still sucked so we went outside. He came outside and asked us what we wanted to hear and obviously I said "The Clash". He started talking about this time in 1979 where he was totally drunk and saw them in a small club in montreal and how they played London's Burning (I'm sure he was lying..)
Anyway, he said he really liked them back then and he sang almost all the songs from the self-titled to london calling. It was scary. And he put rock the casbah. and danced....eww.

I've just read that thread. Looks a bit dubious, but if it were true, I would like to go see it, since I wasn't alive to see the band first-hand.
Obviously it will be a little hollow considering Joe's tragic absence, but it's the Clash nethertheless. What of Topper? Will he appear?

I think I won't go to that.
I believe it's a disrespect to Joe's memory. But I highly doubt it's truthfulness.

guns_of_brixton
08-28-2005, 06:51 PM
I've heard of Walker, and I want it. The actual movie sucked though, I've read.
I don't but the "re-uniting" thing, and if it IS true then they aren't in it for money. Remember, they had Sandinista! sell at the price of a single album.
CombatRock
08-28-2005, 08:16 PM
Yea somone from that thread said they are doing it for the love of music, plus they dont seem like the type that need money to go out and buy a lamborgini either.
SlappedByTheClash
08-28-2005, 08:56 PM
The Walker record actually sounds good. I've heard a few tracks, and the basslines are f'ucking tasteful. A couple songs sound like random mariachi band filler, but when Joe sings again, it's all worth it.
And I don't think they're doing it for money either, but still...It shouldn't be done.
guns_of_brixton
08-28-2005, 10:30 PM
The chapter of Let Fury... that talked about all of the movie stuff that Joe did is one of the best. And the Latino Rockabilly War (Joe was with them after doing Walker) had a guy from Sham 69 I think, or some other punX band. I'll have to re-read.

Walker was a movie in the 1980s about some American soldier who declared himself Dictator of Nicaragua (same place as the Sandinista revoltionaries) in the 1860s. Joe composed the soundtrack, the movie tanked, but the soundtrack sold 10,000.

And Tim Armstrong sings like a retarded cunt. Ya might as well let Paulo sing, because Paul Simonon singing = retarded **** singing. And Mick had a good ability to sing and play at once... they could just let him do it.

It's not going to happen. I'm glad it's not. Can you imagine the Clash without Joe? Simple as that. I'm sure no one else can, either. They have no reason to come back. And really, who's gonna sing Joe's songs? Tim? Mike? No way. He wrote those songs. He meant those songs. Certainly they can be covered, but they should not be performed again under the name of the Clash. And why the Clash now? The world doesn't need the Clash, version 2.0, for no reason or purpose at all. And replacing Joe with Tim would be like replacing John Lennon in the Beatles with Liam Gallager. It's just not right. Not for money, not for fame, not for the fans, or even for the sake of the music. Not even close to right.
The Clash existed in a moment of time that was special because they made it special. And they helped bring meaning and purpose to punk rock and furthered the meaning and purpose of rock n roll in general. They left behind a great legacy and a fine example of what a rock n roll band could be if they only cared enough about the music and brought a message with it. They broke down barriers, musical and otherwise, and wouldn't take no for an answer. And as time goes by they may very well be remembered as the band that made punk stick, so to speak.
Nah, they ain't coming and I'm happy about it. What we don't have, we won't miss. It comes at too high a price and compromise. I say we let the Clash rest in peace. And let Joe rest with 'em.

THAT is what I've been trying to say, JohnXDoe just said it 100x better. The Clash were a mythical band, I can't explain it but the guy who wrote The Last Gang in Town can. Death or Glory, White Riot, Washington Bullets, Straight to Hell, White Man, I'm So Bored With the USA, Clampdown, Revoution Rock Tommy Gun, ****, even THIS IS ENGLAND wouldn't mean much without Joe yelping like a fool up there.

Yes. Very bald. At the end he gets choked up about things and explains in a cracked voice how he didn't know about having any "control" back then. That's what he calls it. Said he hadn't learned it yet. He wants to say sorry, but can't quite do it. But I think everyone knows what he's saying. I really did find it to be quite touching to see him become so emotional. He cared back then too, I suppose. Probably just couldn't express it.

Yes, he produced two Libertine albums. I think he has been an active producer and musician for the most part since BAD disbanded. A friend of mine told me he has a band called Carbon/Silicon, or something like that? Supposedly they have recorded a lot of music, but none of it has been released. I don't know why? I also hear he has been championing the causes of p2p networks and the desired rights of people to share music anyway they like. Perhaps that has something to do with his lack of official musical output. Now that you mention what he might be up to though, I would think he has a site or something. I'm gonna check it out. Hopefully the Mick Jones from that crap band Foreigner won't show up in my google search. :smash:

My name is John. Just like my user title. And you are welcome to call me John. Nice to meet you, and thank you for inviting me this past week to the Clash/Joe Strummer forum. It's a good place to spend some time.

I haven't posted here in like a month. I just got Super Black Clash Market and From Here To Eternity Live. Both are highly recommended. I now clock in at 8 official Clash albums.

Oh hey, did you guys know that in 1973 (or sometime in the mid 70s) Joe Strummer married an immigrant woman just so she could have citizenship or a passport (I forgot exactly what it was) in exchange for a few hundred dollars (or pounds since I assume it was Brit money) which he bought the Telecaster with. He said something once in an interview like "I'd like to get a divorce, but I can't find her."

Joe was a funny guy. I wonder how many people know that about him? That story about him getting married for money and not being able to get a divorice, for example. I can see him saying that, tongue in cheek, little smile on his face, and boyish mischief in his eye. Giving a little chuckle. Joe Public sleeping, indeed. :p

I love the version of Complete Control on From Here To Eternity Live. Few bands can do that on stage. Opens the album great. And the wail he gives near the end. When I'm alone and I'm listening to that album, I give it a go everytime. I fail miserably, but I give it a shot nonetheless.

What is this full DVD concert you speak of? Is it a bootleg? An Import perhaps? A companion to From Here To Eternity Live? I've not heard of a full live Clash DVD. Am I missing something here? I want something like that.
I'm off to ebay! :smash:

Very good, Combat Rock. I was going to do the same. I suppose it is probobly hit and miss with bootlegs and imports. I would love to get my hands on one of their last gigs ever as the original Clash. I think there is one circulating. Apparently it was a festival gig in San Bernadino, California, and while there was some controversy surrounding the night, I've read the performance is steller. Also they used a sit in drummer that night, as Terry Chimes had left the group. Who was ok, but I was never quite fond of. Topper was amazing, and IMO could not be replaced. Which says nothing of Terry and a lot of Topper.
Anyway, I'll keep looking around and thanks for the info.

They talk about and show a bit of footage of that gig during Westway. I'd like to own it.

In Westway, Joe makes it seem so outrageous that Terry would want a Lamb. And his Cockney accent really comes through when he pronounces Lamborghini.

The rumour about Tim joining the Clash? Oh yeah. That was a rumor before it started, that's how far fetched it was. If it ever happened, would I check it out? Sure. I'm sure it would be fine. Would it be the Clash? No. Which means it would carry not nearly the weight or force of the Clash. It would be like a Clash cover band. Entertaining, yes. The Clash? By name only.

Just now? Probably the first thing I noticed. Topper is one of the best rock drummers of his era, if not the best.
